need to totally replace contacts in the iPhone 5s with the contacts in Apple Mail Address Book on an iMac running OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) with latest version of iTunes. I know there must be a way to do this, but have been unable to figure it out so far. This is my first smartphone and it's only 3 weeks old. IT person at work set my email up, but I want the contacts to be the ones from my home computer. A merge or sync would produce the wrong desired results, so I need to completely replace the iPhone contacts.

Correct. To use an iPhone5 with iTunes you must use iTunes 10.7. To use iTunes 10.7 you absolutely must be running at least OSX 10.6.8.
We use an iPhone without iTunes but the main thing we do not do is sync. We do not have an music or movies on the phone, though you could as long as you did all the interfacing with iCloud. We back up our modest (<5GB) collection of things to iCloud. You can use Image capture or iPhoto to transfer photos and movies you take with the phone to a computer.

It is unusual for the calendar to sync and not the contacts in Outlook. I've worked with Outlook for years. You didn't answer what computer OS you are using. If it is Windows, have you tried to reset the sync history in iTunes? Do that by opening iTunes, go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and click on reset sync history. If you have done this and it doesn't help, then we can try and run scanpst.exe on your Outlook file and see if there are any errors. Search your computer for that file, however it normally resides in one of the Microsoft Office folders in the folder Program files. After that, you can see if it will sync.

How do I sync iPhone contacts with osx 10.9.4 contacts?

I have an iPhone running iOS 7.1.2.
It has 143 contacts in it.
I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.4 with 'Contacts' 8.0.
It shows the same 33 contacts I entered when I got my iPhone in 2012.
I have been trying to update, i.e., SYNC, the contacts in my MacBook Pro's Contacts 8.0 using a USB cable without any luck. I'm not a big fan of iCloud.
I have SYNC CONTACTS checked in iTunes 11.2.2 INFO with my iPhone connected via USB.
Since the MacBook Pro's Contact 8.0 is where my contacts SHOULD be saved and THE most BASIC way to save the contacts, I'm amazed at how convoluted and difficult it is to sync my iPhone's contacts with Contacts 8.0 on my MacBook Pro.
What am I missing?

Thanks much for your reply. I was concerned that I don't remember some of the passwords I created for memberships on various sites and publications, and that because with cookies those URLs immediately recognize me, I don't have to try to retrieve or reset those passwords. I guess that Apple in its semi-infinite wisdom has decided we shouldn't ever have access to cookies on our Macs, and I'll have to contact those subscription websites and plead galloping senility, or something.
It's a bit ironic that, well back in the last century --- 1985, for those old enough to remember such a year ever took place -- I was a Mac Early Adopter, very proud to lug my 512K (!!) Mac back and forth to the office every day. But reality intervened ca. '95, when my workplace demanded that I abandon the Mac and march in lockstep to Bill Gates' siren song, and so I couldn't return to the benevolent despotism of Applestan until my recent retirement. IPhone sync'd with iMac at home, need to put something on it while on road

We are on a trip and my wife has her iPhone with her and her Air. She keeps the iPhone sync'd with her iMac at home, but has purchased an audiobook from the store and needs to move it to the phone. Right now, we are sort of stymied because when we plug the iPhone into the air, it tells us it is sync'd with the other machine.
How do we get that book from the air to the iPhone? If I could have gotten to her fast enough, I would have had her buy it on the phone, but she has already purchased it, and it's sitting on the air.

In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. The iPhone does not support disk mode as is supported with an iPod.

The best option would be to create separate user account on the computer that you separately use to sync with. This keeps contact and calendar data from being merged together. You can however still sync or share media with each user by following the steps in the second article below.

Do you share your computer with someone who has different tastes in music and media? You can create separate user accounts for each person who uses the computer. You can maintain separate, personalized iTunes libraries and customize each devices' sync settings accordingly.

In Denmark we get new one, if the first one is broken. Thats besures the can't make them for Apple. I Think after 3 times the try to make your iPhone, the have to give you a new one or give back your monet.

I have a manuscript I got off the Internet that has a bunch of isn?t's and wasn?t's and the like—due, I assume, to some miscommunication between MS Word's automatic curly quotes and the ASCII limits of ISO Latin 1. I tried doing a find-and-replace to put typographic apostrophes in place of the question marks. Pages found the question marks and put typewriter apostrophes in place of them, though I'd carefully entered a typographical apostrophe ((opt-shift-]) in the Replace field. So I tried again, to replace the typewriter apostrophes with typographical apostrophes. Pages now replaced the few typographical apostrophes I'd manually entered with typewriter apostrophes. Well, at least it's consistent. So far as Pages, Apple's flagship word-processing/page-layout app is concerned, there's apparently no such thing as a typographical apostrophe—something that was understood, as I recall, by the original MacWrite 25 years ago. So do I have to go back to doing all my editing in TextEdit (which seems to be much better at text work than Pages), or can somebody tell me how to persuade Pages to take care of this trifling little task correctly?

Copy these two paragraphs into a Pages WP document:

Check any of the replacements by enlarging the type; you’ll see an ASCII apostrophe ['] rather than the requested typographical version [’].
Then enter Find: " (space-") and Replace: “ (space-opt-[), and click Replace All. It will say 1 Replaced, meaning the quote mark preceding "It" in the second sentence (the only quote mark preceded by a space). Enlarge the replacement to see it clearly; it's replaced an ASCII " with another ASCII ".
So far as I can tell, Pages’ Find-Replace function can't tell the difference between ASCII apostrophe/quote marks and the typographical versions. Maybe it will once you turn on smart quotes in preferences; I haven't tried that -- but then of course you'd get smart quotes when you don't want them, for instance for something to be posted on an Internet forum, which often doesn't understand them. (The problems above and similar, often seen on the 'Net, are due to MS Word's having smart quotes on by default, so unaware users compose material with them and send it out over teh Interwebz, where they sometimes come through correctly, sometimes don't.)
Try the same experiment in TextEdit; you'll get the requested typographical versions. And so I did, then copied the text back to Pages. Like I said, kinda shoddy for Apple's Pride & Joy word processor. AppleWorks, by the way, does it right.

Correlation Settings
Define which algorithm is to be used to create the message ID of a new XI message. The prerequisite for selecting an ID is that it is a GUID (globally unique identifier) according to ISO-11578.
If the message ID is not a GUID, message processing will fail. This can cause message duplicates if the ID is not unique. Furthermore, if the GUID does not conform to ISO-11578, this can trigger a GUIDFormatException.
Set XI Message ID (MessageID) To:
-         GUID (Recommended Value)
-         JMSMessageID (Uniqueness Is JMS-Provider-Dependent)
-         JMSCorrelationID (Uniqueness Is JMS-Sender-Dependent)
-         JMSProperty (Uniqueness Is JMS-Sender-Dependent)
Enter the JMS Property Name. This value is set for the XI message ID.
If the JMSCorrelationID or JMSProperty are not set in the JMS message, a message ID is generated automatically.
If you have selected JMSMessageID, JMSCorrelationID, or JMSProperty and entered a JMS message ID in these fields, you should see the Remove 'ID:' Marker from JMSMessageIDindicator. Set the indicator.
This is necessary because the JMS specification stipulates that each JMS message ID starts with 'ID'. However, this conflicts with ISO-11578.
Set XI Conversation ID (ConversationID) To:
