How to restart(--replace) gnome-shell Ctrl+Alt+F*

Hi,
I'm having random Gnome-shell freezes, everything seems to be working fine except for the shell itself, which seems to be completely frozen. I want to restart it using CTRL+ALT+F* and
gnome-shell --replace
or
mutter--replace
, but I get this:
Window manager error: unable to open X display.
I know from random research that I have to set the $DISPLAY env. but I don't know which display to export.
Thanks in advance.

Hello
in theory, its something similiar to this
export DISPLAY=:0.0
Yep, I tried this with no luck. I guess I need to get the correct display number.
However, here i had to issue gnome-shell --replace multiple times until it got accepted. And even then, it sometimes crashed completely and threw me back to the dm. An alternative could be to pkill gnome-shell, as it should get auto-respawned by the gnome-session.
edit: assuming /usr/share/applications/gnome-shell.desktop sets X-GNOME-AutoRestart=true
I tried this and it works great, I still have to issue the command while the shell is frozen, but I guess it'll work fine
Thank you.

  • GNOME on Ctrl Alt F7

I am pretty sure the topic has already been raised in this forum. But I do not find the correct search terms.
After one of the updates this year the GNOME desktop is now accessible via CTRL+ALT+F7. I have three terminals configured in inittab and the GNOME desktop used to be at CTRL+ALT+F4. Now the F4 to F6 keys are not in use any more. I searched for some time to swtich back GNOME to CTRL+ALT+F4 but could not find a solution. Can anyone direct me to the correct topic or provide a solution?
    Many thanks and best regards

  • Restart gnome shell after crash

Oh no, something went wrong.. you saw it too? I don't like that message because if I haven't external monitor I'm not able to save my work. With my external monitor plugged in I switch to tty2 and restart gnome shell as follows:
    gnome-shell --display :0 --replace &
then I'm able to move all hidden windows behind the OH NO message to my second monitor and save my work & logout. The whole shell works fine, so I'm able to continue working as usually BUT the black screen on external monitor with logout button.
The question is, how to remove/quit/disable/kill/whatever that OH NO message after gnome-shell restart from tty[x] ???
    Thanks

Well, my solution was to remove my nvidia card and use the Intel open source driver (not joking here !).
If you really love your nvidia board, i can only think of
    - Alt+F2 - r when you come back from hibernation
    - integrate with the systemd /etc/systemd/system/[email protected] unit to run "killall -3 gnome-shell" which would automate this restarting of gnome-shell

  • [SOLVED] Gnome-Shell: Alt+F2 and PATH

    Hallo everybody,
I have added $HOME/bin to my PATH with
    export PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"
    in my .bashrc.
This works fine with the terminal, but Gnome-Shell's Alt+F2 doesn't find the scripts in ~/bin.
How can I add ~/bin to the PATH of Alt+F2?
    Thank you.

    lunyx,
Welcome to Arch.  If you consider this thread solved, go ahead and edit your first post and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the thread title.  It helps those searching for solutions.  The moderators don't do that, because we don't really know when members regard things as solved.

  • Gnome-shell not showing app icons

I own a Sony Vaio Z laptop equipped with a common intel video card and an external Radeon HD 7000 graphics card (literally external, connected through thunderbolt/lightpeak).
The problem is that whenever I connect the external video card (which by the way works just fine using the opensource ati driver), gnome-shell fails to paint most of my app icons and other possibly related problems appear:
        (1) as I said, no icons for some of the apps (see this screenshot); if i restart gnome-shell (using Alt+F2, r) the icons show up but just for the next couple of minutes. Only the icons that are painted by gnome-shell seem to be problematic (these include the dash, the apps list and sometimes the status menu icons). No useful output messages are printed by gnome-shell if running from a terminal. No extensions are enabled at all. This also happens with the default icon set.
        (2) gnome-screenshot timeouts after ~20 seconds saying "** Message: Unable to use GNOME Shell's builtin screenshot interface, resorting to fallback X11". ltrace says that a call to g_dbus_connection_call_sync blocks the process.
        (3) scrolling in chromium using the mouse is sometimes laggy, but this may be due to issues in the radeon driver.
None of these problems appear when the external card is not connected. I know this may be an upstream bug but I'd like to see first if the Arch community has any idea about this. I am really willing to debug this issue and spend as much time as needed on it, but I don't know where to start from.

It appears that all the 10 threads of the GTask thread pool are fully occupied most of the time. Therefore all the glib async requests are blocked for a while until the active tasks somehow finish (or timeout). I have no idea though how to find out what are those 10 threads occupied with.

  • Garbled gnome-shell after hibernation resume with nvidia GPU

    Hello,
Using the proprietary driver 346.35-4 on GF106 [GeForce GTS 450] on a desktop (64 bits). After fiddling with the hibernation and mkinicpio hooks, it does work now, but when resuming from hibernation the whole display is garbled/tiled.
Restarting gnome-shell (Alt+F2 & r) does seem to clean that mess up, but i'm looking for a cleaner way to achieve this.

    Any hints ?
Btw i'm hibernating using systemctl hibernate, and the kernel boot parameter resume=/dev/sda2 has been added; i'm using the systemd initcpio hook instead of resume (but both behave the same in regards to this issue).

that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment

  • Gnome-shell not run automatically

    hi.
when gnome 3.8 came out, I was using gnome classic (compatibility mode) and the option to switch back to gnome-shell disapeared in gnome tweak tool. So I had no option to switch to gnome-shell. I never mind continue to use metacity and gnome classic in compatibility mode.
Now in 3.10 I don't even get a mouse cursor and font rendering is awfull. So I have to use gnome-shell and not metacity.
How do I do so that gnome-shell is automatically run when I launch a gnome session ??
I have tried to add a gnome-shell.desktop in ~/.config/autostart or add gnome-shell with gnome-session-properties at start. Nothing worked.
At last, I was able to prevent metacity to run at launch by removing metacity.desktop in autostart or removing a session file lying around.
Now, I have to open a terminal and manually run gnome-shell.
    Help.
p.s.: how does gdm launch gnome-shell for you ?

    It works.
What I have done is to remove ~/.config/gnome-sessions/sessions/gnome-fallback.session and replace it with gnome.session
But I got a "ooops something wrong happened" when I tried to login so I think what fixes it was running
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session gnome
from a terminal run from a console with startx and gnome-session --session=gnome in ~/.xinitrc
    I got help from http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7385192.html
a post from an arch user posting on gentoo forum. WTF !

  • HT201612 how to use ctrl+alt+delete to restart with boot camp

how to use (ctrl+alt+delete) to restart?

You press all the keys (ctrl+alt+delete) at once
    Some information
In a personal computer with the Windows operating system, Ctrl-Alt-Delete is the combination of keyboard keys that the computer user can press at the same time to terminate an application task or to reboot the operating system (have it shut down and restart itself). In Windows 95 or any later systems, Ctrl-Alt-Delete brings up a window that allows a user to see the status of all currently running programs and to terminate any of them, and also offers the options of shutting down, restarting, and so on (the specific options vary slightly with the particular version of windows). In Windows 95 or 98, if Ctrl-Alt-Delete is pressed a second time or twice in a row quickly, the operating system closes all programs that are running and then restarts.
When the operating system seems to hang suspended while waiting for an application program to continue, a user is also left without a way to regain control of the system. The Ctrl-Alt-Delete key combination allows the user to terminate the "hung" application and, if that doesn't work, to reboot the system. The system can also be restarted using the mouse to select Start-->Turn Off the System-->Restart. However, Ctrl-Alt-Delete sometimes works when the menu option doesn't.

  • How to replace Epiphany in Gnome Shell ?

    Hi there,
when im searching for something in the gnome shell overview it offers me to search for it on the web, if nothing is found on my system.
Unfortunally epiphany is opened, but I want to use chromium.
I selected Chromium in the "Default App" Dialog but that does not take effect:
How can i change this ?

I'm looking for doing the exact same thing, but with Firefox.
    Relevant GNOME documentation:  https://developer.gnome.org/shell/stabl … ystem.html and https://developer.gnome.org/shell/stabl … ider2.html.
I also found this commit log that details a bit more which files are involved in the process of making Epiphany's search provider...
Another example with an extension that integrates Wikipedia search in the shell: Wikipedia Search Provider (GitHub page linked).
I tried creating /usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers/firefox-search-provider.ini based on epiphany's one by just substituting browser names, however while this put a Firefox option in Search settings
of course it doesn't pop up in Shell results... I don't know what I should modify to do so, but it's probably a lot more effort than that
I must add that as soon as a search is done through the Shell that offers you to expand it in Epiphany/Web, a complete Epiphany/Web process (so it is WebKitWebPocess and epiphany) starts in headless-mode and eats up some of your RAM (54MB on my system), even if you didn't follow through in Epiphany (dev blog post about this "feature": https://people.gnome.org/~csaavedra/news-2013-10.html). No need to say that those processes don't terminate by themselves either, and if you do it manually it'll crash-restart your session.
As I wasn't happy with this I disabled Web search provider in GNOME Control Center (Preferences > Search) and use the Web Search Provider extension, the only that allows you to search through configured search provider AND respect your default browser choice AFAICT... Let us know if you find something else!

  • How to restart swing application by using shotcut key (ex :CTRL+ALT+ENTER)

Currently my swing application freezs some times, it will not come back,I would work on fixing that problem. Sounds like you aren't using Threads properly and are blocking the EDT. Read the section from the Swing tutorial on [url http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/uiswing/concurrency/index.html]Concurrency for more information.
how i can implement short cut key (CTRL+ALT+ENTER) that can restart my application.Within Swing this would be done by using "Key Bindings". A section on Key Binding is found on the tutorial link from above. However, is Swing actually is frozen then this won't work.
Therefore this would need to be done at the OS level, which java doesn't support. You would need to use JNI, which I know nothing about.

  • Gnome-shell 3.10.2 + gdm: interface broken. Restart with "r" fixes it

    Hello forum
I have a fresh install of Arch with Gnome-shell and GDM, and after logging in for the first time, the Gnome-shell interface appears broken. See the screenshots below:
    The desktop
    http://imgur.com/RWJROK3
and when clicking the top right tray icons, the menu appears broken, and no text is shown.
    http://imgur.com/haVXdhD
If I do Alt+F2 and run "r" to restart Gnome-shell, everything gets back to normal. Even if I log off and on again, everything stays running ok.
I have a DELL XPS, and I have bumblebee (+bbswitch)  installed, using the intel+nvidia drivers, as instructed in the Arch Wiki.
Any clues on how to debug this? It's a (minor) headache having to 'r' on every first login boot.
    Thanks!!
UPDATE: It doesn't happen on EVERY first boot. I just rebooted and it didn't happen, but earlier today it happened 2 times. I'll keep trying to narrow it down to see what might be causing this.
