How to replace Epiphany in Gnome Shell ?

Hi there,
when im searching for something in the gnome shell overview it offers me to search for it on the web, if nothing is found on my system.
Unfortunally epiphany is opened,but I want to use chromium.
I selected Chromium in the "Default App" Dialog but that does not take effect:
How can i change this ?

I'm looking for doing the exact same thing, but with Firefox.
Relevant GNOME documentation:  https://developer.gnome.org/shell/stabl … ystem.html and https://developer.gnome.org/shell/stabl … ider2.html.
I also found this commit log that details a bit more which files are involved in the process of making Epiphany's search provider...
Another example with an extension that integrates Wikipedia search in the shell: Wikipedia Search Provider (GitHub page linked).
I tried creating /usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers/firefox-search-provider.ini based on epiphany's one by just substituting browser names, however while this put a Firefox option in Search settings
of course it doesn't pop up in Shell results... I don't know what I should modify to do so, but it's probably a lot more effort than that
I must add that as soon as a search is done through the Shell that offers you to expand it in Epiphany/Web, a complete Epiphany/Web process (so it is WebKitWebPocess and epiphany) starts in headless-mode and eats up some of your RAM (54MB on my system), even if you didn't follow through in Epiphany (dev blog post about this "feature": https://people.gnome.org/~csaavedra/news-2013-10.html). No need to say that those processes don't terminate by themselves either, and if you do it manually it'll crash-restart your session.
As I wasn't happy with this I disabled Web search provider in GNOME Control Center (Preferences > Search) and use the Web Search Provider extension, the only that allows you to search through configured search provider AND respect your default browser choice AFAICT... Let us know if you find something else!

  • How to restart(--replace) gnome-shell Ctrl+Alt+F*

    Hi,
    I'm having random Gnome-shell freezes, everything seems to be working fine except for the shell itself, which seems to be completely frozen. I want to restart it using CTRL+ALT+F* and
    gnome-shell --replace
    or
    mutter--replace
    , but I get this:
    Window manager error: unable to open X display.
    I know from random research that I have to set the $DISPLAY env. but I don't know which display to export.
    Thanks in advance.

    Yep, I tried this with no luck. I guess I need to get the correct display number.
    However, here i had to issue gnome-shell --replace multiple times until it got accepted. And even then, it sometimes crashed completely and threw me back to the dm. An alternative could be to pkill gnome-shell, as it should get auto-respawned by the gnome-session.
    edit: assuming /usr/share/applications/gnome-shell.desktop sets X-GNOME-AutoRestart=true
    I tried this and it works great, I still have to issue the command while the shell is frozen, but I guess it'll work fine
    Thank you.

  • Does anyone have Gnome Shell up and running? If so, how did you do it?

    Hi all!
    I've tried installing Gnome Shell via gnome-shell and gnome-shell-git in AUR and the guide over here: http://zazaq.com/2010/04/27/gnome-scree … 0-on-arch/ to no avail. The latter method actually compiles after a few minor tweaks, but after running:
    gnome-shell/install/bin/gnome-shell --replace
    I am stuck with errors like this:
    JS ERROR: !!! Exception was: Error: Requiring GLib, version none: Typelib file for namespace 'GLib' (any version) not found
    JS ERROR: !!! lineNumber = '0'

    Followed by:
    Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.
    Looking around on the interwebs, the latter error suggests removing xulrunner, which I have done. This actually allows me to start gnome-shell, but the only thing that happens is that mutter kicks in and the window decoration changes slightly but I do not get the actual shell. Having removed xulrunner, I get this error:
    (mutter:1063): mutter-WARNING **: Could not load library [/home/korpenkraxar/gnome-shell/install/lib64/mutter/plugins/libgnome-shell.so (libmozjs.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)]
    And now I am stuck. Any ideas or pointers anyone?

    I got it running a while back.  (Like, a couple of months ago.  It's now gone, for multiple reasons).  If memory serves me correctly, I just enabled the gnome-unstable repository and downloaded and it worked (it didn't compile properly from AUR for me).  Well, I say "worked".  It was very slow.
    Maybe add
    [gnome-unstable]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    to pacman.conf if you want to give it a go.
    On the subject of gnome shell, has anyone got it to run smoothly?  I have a 1Gb nvidia card, 4Gb ram and dual core 3Ghz cpu and it was totally unusable when I tried it.

  • How do I add an input source besides English in Gnome Shell? [SOLVED]

    Hello.
    I'm a bit confused as to how I should add additional languages/input sources in Gnome Shell. When I ran Gnome Shell in Ubuntu, I could add additional input sources via the Region & Language section of the Gnome control panel, but in Arch I've only got English (my locale is en_US.UTF-8). I'd like to be able to switch between English & Hebrew.
    Do I need to install an underlying gnome package for handling additional input sources? Or do I need to manually add a locale? The wiki seems unclear on this. Also, should I use localectl? I'm also a bit unsure there.
    Thanks!

    I think so.
    Edit the file at /etc/locale.gen and un-comment the desired locale then run:

  • Gnome-shell with nouveau - how is the performance

    I have an old 8400GS and find gnome-shell's performance under nouveau pretty bad.  Is it my card or the driver?  If you have a more powerful card, how is the performance?  I'm no gamer but is there a more powerful (none fan cooled) nvidia card that's better?

    Looks okay.... guess my 8400GS is just underpowered for this driver.  I ordered the 450 GTS so we'll see

    @KingYes There must be more than that single line (which isn't even meaningful). Can you git pull the latest usbmon-setperms script and re-run it again? Try to move to get some messages and tap once you see some messages. If you do not get something, it is probably the wrong USB bus. In that case, please post the output of lsusb -d 046d:.

  • [Gnome 3.8] How to activate tray pressure in gnome shell ?

    I read that notification area could be opened by letting a few seconds mouse pointer on the bottom edge, as described here :
    http://blog.mecheye.net/2013/03/barriers/
    But on both my desktop computer (with nouveau driver) and laptop  (with intel driver), I cannot get it work.
    Any tips ? Thanks !

    High pressure activates it. Low pressure does nothing. Pressure is defined by the number of pixels past the edge of the screen. If pressure is set to 250px, you need to move your mouse 250px past the edge to activate it. This setting can be tweaked in /usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/layout.js, line 26. For example, to have the message tray appear instantaneously set the pressure parameter to 0px.

  • [Solved] Nautilus bookmarks - Gnome Shell Doesn't Start

    Hi there.
    I've tried to search and have been scratching my head by what probably has a really simple solution but I have not found it so far.
    I've made a fresh install of Arch, system is up to date, with Gnome 3 (shell and whatnot).
    I've set my locale in /etc/rc.conf to pt_BR and have properly generated locales.
    $ locale -a
    C
    en_US
    en_US.iso88591
    en_US.utf8
    POSIX
    pt_BR
    pt_BR.iso88591
    pt_BR.utf8
    Gnome is localized to pt_BR
    Everything is fine and dandy except for a really annoying thing.
    xdg-user-dirs-update
    Creates folders with incorrect characters when viewed on Nautilus (but appear correct on Nautilus sidebar).
    I tried editing the .config/user-dirs.dirs file with gedit, it showed the wrong characters but allowed me to write the correct ones. Saved it and ran xdg-user-dis-update, the output is borked characters. Tried editing it in nano, same results.
    I've managed to manually delete and create the correct folders using
    xdg-user-dirs-update --set MUSIC /home/$USER/Foldername
    but, while it displays properly on nautilus when navigating, it doesn't display properly on the sidebar.
    I'm linking to a screenshot so it is easier to understand. The music folder should read "Músicas". You can see I'm inside the Videos folder but the sidebar name doesn't match the folder name.
    http://i453.photobucket.com/albums/qq25 … _issue.jpg
    Any ideas?
    EDIT: After this post, I rebooted and gnome shell would no longer start - at all. I would get it to log in and display the wallpaper but that was it. I could get into xfce4 from gdm so I knew the issue was with gnome.
    Nonetheless, I went ahead and did yet another reinstall (I always assume I borked a package or hard-to-find-configuration).
    Feeling frustated but being a tad wiser I noticed a weird behavior on ~/.xsessionerror
    [Error initializing libicu support]
    This went on forever until I aborted the command.
    Changing my locale on my rc.conf from pt_BR to en_US fixed gnome-shell. I was once again able to boot into it without a problem. I then, from within gnome, choose portuguese as the default locale (gnome-control-panel, not rc.conf). This fixed the Nautilus issue above and has not stopped gnome-shell from working. I don't know *how* they implement their localization but heck, it works.
    Solved and maybe it might help anyone with the same issue.

    Hmm, since yesterday I'm fumbling around with those settings too. It seems this is not settings related at all (at least not to old package settings), but rather to nautilus' behavior. Just a few minutes ago I've set "view all hidden files" to true in it's settings. It instantly crashed. After a reboot gnome-shell is gone. This is really annoying.
    Also there is no taskbar, no menu bar, no nothing in fallback mode!... Is this even fallback mode?
    Trying to launch gnome-shell from terminal then gives:

  • [SOLVED!]I'd like to add a dedicated Gnome-Shell session entry to GDM.

    Edit:
    Well, thanks for all your help guys, I really did appreciate it all.
    However I've remembered something I used to use in Ubuntu.
    I added a Gnome-Shell .desktop file into my /home/myname/.config/autostart folder like this
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Application
    Exec=gnome-shell --replace &
    Hidden=false
    X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
    Name[en_US]=Gnome Shell
    Name=Gnome Shell
    Comment[en_US]=Start Gnome Shell!
    Comment=Start Gnome Shell!
    OnlyShowIn=GNOME
    It starts only in Gnome and nothing else, just how I wanted it to. I'm aware that this is more of a bandaid fix than anything else, but it works!
    Thanks again, now I can use KDE, Gnome-Shell, and Openbox.

    Hello nimbus,
    i don't have a gdm setup at hand, but i think you still need gnome-session. /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-shell.desktop should probably state
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    Exec=gnome-session --session gnome-with-shell
    Type=Application
    note gnome-sessions man page; sessions specified via the --session flag are looked for in /usr/share/gnome-sessions/sessions.
    There you should have a file like gnome-with-shell.desktop
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    EDIT: Well....definately more progress this time....I think.
    It still doesn't load gnome-shell and instead says
    No EXEC Line in session file gnome-shell, loading fallback mode.
    Here are my entries
    /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-shell.desktop
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    Exec=gnome-session --session gnome-with-shell
    Type=Application
    /usr/share/gnome-sessions/gnome-with-shell.session
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;gnome-power-manager
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    Exec=gnome-shell (I added this in thinking it might be the issue
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    OnlyShowIn=Gnome
    I can still get it to load by using grun and typing gnome-shell --replace, but that's besides the point. Also it would seem that none of my startup applications load like they are suposed to, but I'm sure it's some sort of bug related to the issue.
    Edit:
    Adding even further to the oddness, it would appear that gnome.session already supposedly has these entries, further baffling me as to why it doesn't load gnome-shell to begin with unless it's in my /home/name/.config/autostart folder.
    /usr/share/gnome-sessions/Gnome.session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    Sigh...really confused now. I guess what I need help with is figuring out why old shell here isn't loading unless it's in my autostart directory.

  • [SOLVED]Gnome-shell won't start

    Hello. I cant start Gnome-shell and it force to Fallback. In addition to, in the Fallback mode, i can't change any parameters of gnome.
    get this message when run the command:
    gnome-shell --replace
    (gnome-shell:18571): Gdk-WARNING **: The program 'gnome-shell' received an X Window System error.
    This probably reflects a bug in the program.
    The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
    (Details: serial 132 error_code 1 request_code 139 minor_code 66)
    (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
    that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
    To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
    variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
    backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
    I have ATI Graphic card and installed Catalyst 12.4
    How can i fix it?

  • [Gnome-Shell] Seeing that Thunderbird icon always

    Hi,
    when receiving a mail when I am not at the computer I won't see directly that I got one. Just when going down with the cursor that forces that panel at the bottom to appear. There is my Thunderbird icon notifying me that a mail was received.
    But I like to see it all the time like in Gnome3-Fallback when that icon was always at the top panel in the notification area. Is there any way to see that icon always without clicking/moving somewhere?

    Hello,
    there is a extension tutorial, that shows how to make the gnote icon always visible by moving it to the top tray. You should be able to port it to thunderbird.
    See: http://blog.fpmurphy.com/2011/05/more-g … ation.html
    Edit: I set it up myself here (with gnote though, just replace all gnote calls with thunderbird). It looks like this:
    $pwd
    /home/username/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/[email protected]
    $ls
    extension.js metadata.json
    $cat extension.js
    const StatusIconDispatcher = imports.ui.statusIconDispatcher;
    function main() {
    StatusIconDispatcher.STANDARD_TRAY_ICON_IMPLEMENTATIONS['gnote'] = 'gnote';
    $cat metadata.json
    {"shell-version": ["3.0.2"], "uuid": "[email protected]", "name": "gnotetop", "description": "Moves the gnote icon to the system status bar."}
    There is also in interactive extension tool that ships with gnome-shell. Invoke it with gnome-shell-extension-tool --create, it will do most of the setup for you.

  • Anyone get GNOME Shell working in Virtualbox yet?

    The latest version of Virtualbox came out today and it's supposed to have 3D support for GNOME 3 now and I've heard of some people on other distros getting GNOME Shell working, but I'm not having any such luck. I did a fresh install of Arch tonight, just in case, but I still get fallback mode (after upgrading Virtualbox and enabling 3D support, guest additions, etc). This is the error I'm getting:
    [root@sandbox ~]# gnome-shell --replace
    failed to create drawable
    (gnome-shell:1242): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: Unable to select the newly created GLX context
    Window manager error: Unable to initialize Clutter.
    It's the same error that someone was getting here a few weeks ago: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=928760
    However, with the Virtualbox upgrade, it's *supposed* to be running now, so I have no idea... So has anyone got this to work yet?

    In guest:
    ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri /usr/lib/dri
    or if the directory /usr/lib/dri is present, then
    ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/vboxvideo_dri.so /usr/lib/dri
    Or use latest virtualbox-guest-additons package.
    Enjoy!
    Somehow, it fails to work for me, don't know why! I just did a fresh install of Arch on a VM inside VirtualBox. Then installed Gnome by pacman -Sf gnome (yeah, conflicts. Had to force!) But, it dropped to fallback mode! Now, how do I get the 3d support?

  • Gnome-Shell mail notifier 'Mailnag'

    Hi to everyone,
    I was looking for this plugin (but it's not a javascript plugin, it's a python application) to let automatically check on gnome-shell notifier system when mail comes. Tha's the repo https://launchpad.net/mailnag. And this is how to catch:
    bzr branch lp:mailnag
    To run it just run mailnag_config
    I tried to let it work but it can't create the configuration file (it seems that it can't create the configuration file) so i'm stuck. Maybe i'm missing some not specificated dependencies?
    Thanks in advance

    I just got mine working it seems like there is an other sneaky dependency, as the script depends on aplay from alsa-utils to play a notification sound. After installing alsa-utils, everything worked.
    For your problem: I don't really know about the differences between gmail and googlemail, but try to replace ****@gmail.com with ****@googlemail.com. If you are from the UK or Germany, you could be affected by this: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answ … wer=165761

    3. Edit: I extracted the code that causes your error into a standalone script. Invoke it with python2 for further investigations.
