How to retain original song data (Date Added, etc.) after computer reformat.

Hello!
I recently had to reformat my computer, and I was able to copy all my music files and data to an external hard drive.
I currently have iTunes installed on my C drive (Windows 7) and all my music files are on a partition of my PC hard drive (P:). See image below.
What I like to do is to retain all the original song information (Date Added, Last Played, Play Count, etc.) from before I reformated, without all the songs having a Date Added of today's date and time.
I've tried to research this elsewhere on the Internet. A couple suggestions I've read pertain mostly to Macs but included the following:
~ Using the "iTunes Library.itl" file by choosing a library. Not sure how to do this method on the Windows version. (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3155068?start=0&tstart=0)
~ Changing the iTunes Media folder location (under Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced tab). I changed it to the folder above (P:\My Music\iTunes\) and clicked OK but nothing happens.
Any help or detailed instructions are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

OK, I partially solved the problem.
I primarily followed the steps under Re-creating the iTunes Library file on this page:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
I imported using the iTunes Music Library.xml file that I saved before reformating. This file had all the correct library information before I reformatted, including the Play Count, Play Date UIC, Rating, and Date Added data. Snipet here:
<dict>
          <key>Track ID</key><integer>20090</integer>
          <key>Name</key><string>Killer Queen</string>
          <key>Artist</key><string>Queen</string>
          <key>Composer</key><string>Freddie Mercury</string>
          <key>Album</key><string>Greatest Hits I</string>
          <key>Date Added</key><date>2011-02-27T21:44:06Z</date>
          <key>Play Count</key><integer>5</integer>
          <key>Play Date UTC</key><date>2011-04-14T05:11:12Z</date>
          <key>Rating</key><integer>80</integer>
</dict>
Upon importing, all the music and playlists are now in my library along with all the original data I had before (Last Played, Plays, Ratings)...
...EXCEPT for the Date Added column. All the songs in my library show the same date of 05/15/2012 under Date Added.
Is there a reason why the Date Added data is not carried over?
On a side note: my music hard drive partition before the reformat was "J:", now it is "P:". So, to make it work I made a quick find/replace to the iTunes Music Library.xml so that all "\J:\" now show "\P:\". If this makes a difference, let me know.
Thanks!

  • How can I copy songs with metadata (added in iTunes) from my PC to my new iMac?

I have iTunes 12.0.1 on my Windows PC. I'm about to get a new iMac (hooray!) and I'm beginning the process of transferring everything on my PC to my Mac. I've got all the documents, pictures, files, etc. covered, but now I have to make a copy of all of my music.
Most of the music in my iTunes library is not bought through the iTunes Store (I download most of my songs from the Internet). Then, after saving the downloaded song to my computer, I go into iTunes on my computer and add the song. I also add metadata like artist, album, genre, album artwork, etc. to the song in iTunes. What concerns me is that only the songs in iTunes have this metadata: the original downloaded files I saved onto my computer don't have any metadata.
I really don't want to have to go through the long and tedious process of adding artist/album names, genre, etc. to every single song in my iTunes library on my new iMac. How can I copy songs with metadata (added in iTunes) from my PC to my new iMac?
Thank you so much for any help!

Hello! I'd like to learn more about Home Sharing. To do this, would both my PC (which I hope to get rid of) and my new iMac need to be plugged in?
Also, after Home Sharing with the old PC is initiated, I understand that all my songs would appear on my iMac. Is there a way to copy all of these (with album artwork, name, artist, etc.) directly to the iMac's hard drive and then disconnect home sharing so I can get rid of my PC?
    Thank you!

  • ITunes folder (playlists, date added, etc.) reloading back into iTunes

I was experiencing some really weird computer behaviors so I did an archive and install. I'm left with one little problem. I have cruised around the discussions and thought I was following the directions properly to reload iTunes data so I could see it in the iTunes program. As I understood, the instructions were to open iTunes using the option key so I could choose a library. Then I clicked on the iTunes folder in Music. Nothing happens. I thought my songs, podcasts, etc. would show up in iTunes. I'm working with about 44 GB of data, but that shouldn't be a hinderance should it? Where am I going wrong? I'll bet this is pretty simple, but I can't seem to find the instructions in "discussions" or "help" so that I can have my playlists, date added, etc. Thanks for help on this simplistic problem. I really appreciate it. Nancy

One possibility-the Library in your Previous System folder may have been archived with a newer version of iTunes than was re-installed. You can go forward but not backward.
Try updating iTunes to the latest version first, then finding the archived folder.

And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

  • HT203167 lost my hard drive how can i get songs from ipod back to new computer

I lost my hard drive and want to get my music back on my new computer. How can I get songs from my ipod to my computer? I am afraid to sync it and losing what is on my ipod. Any help would be appreciated.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod:  File>Transfer Purchases

how can i put songs from my itunes on my computer onto my iphone?
The newest version of itunes seems to be a little more difficult to do this than past versions. I plug in my iphone to my computer and it does not allow me to "drag" songs into my iphone option anymore. Help!
The songs I am trying to get on my iphone are from CDs that I have purchased outside of the itunes store. Can I not put those on my iphone anymore?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Select the phone in the device list in iTunes, navigate to the music tab, check the music you want iTunes to sync with your phone, click the apply/sync button.

how can i see songs to sync to iphone from computer?

you can't sync songs from your phone to your computer, syncing is a computer to phone process. if you purchased songs on your phone from itunes and want them to go to your computer so you can listen to them there, you right-click on the name of your phone in itunes and choose 'transfer purchases.' these are the only songs that will go in that direction

  • I want to retain my itunes 'date added' information when transferring to my new macbook pro

    Hello There
I think even before I ask this, that I know what the answer will be, so please don't laugh at me, just sympathise..
I have a lot of music. A lot. So much I need to use the date added to keep it all organised and know where I am. Previously I used a computer from work for everything, but just got a shiny new macbook pro - woo hoo!
First thing I did was transfer my itunes library. I use a HD so pretty easy, simply hold down the option key whilst starting itunes, select the library on my HD and wallop, off we go. After a few minutes of chugging all my music is there and my playlists. Fantastic I thought, but then hold on - date added says today. This can't be right I say to myself, some of these files were added in 2008...
Being slightly paranoid about doing this I created a copy of my old itunes library - better safe than sorry. I open the old back up of itune library (an xml file) and sure enough, all the correct dates are there. I open up the new one and it says everything was imported today. Weird. So I try reimporting -doesn't work, overwriting the new xml file with the old info, saving and opening itunes again - no sir. Nothing works. It appears that whilst I can interact with the xml file, itunes uses another file (itunes document) which checks consistency, and won't allow the xml file info to overwrite, simply rehashes to the dates it thinks are right.
Done a fair bit of research and I think the answer is there is not an answer. Being the wise old owl that apple is, it has decided that users will not want this information if they ever move or buy new computers, so while it will keep your playlists, it won't have this bit of info. My only option has been to create spreadsheets of old list for reference.
I'm hoping out there someone will tell me that apple have realised this is rubbish and have fixed, or will say fret no longer, here is the magic workaround, but I haven't found anyone who can yet. Does anyone have the answer?
Until then, I will continue to perform this awkward workaround and stick pins into the apple voodoo doll.
    Cheers
    Mr Sherlock

weird very weird. today i did this again today after already being unsuccessful earlier. exactly the same thing as i have done before, exactly. didn't try to import. didn't say damaged library, copied everything in including date. have tried it about 10 times no luck. today it just worked.
    how weird is that?
oh well JG - maybe you mixed a magic potion for me?
anyway, thank you for all the help.
to anyone else reading this all i can say is keep trying, you never know. follow the above advice. you may feel exasperated and think you have done it already, but keep trying.
    cheers

  • How do I sort by date added while maintaining track order?

    Hello,
I'm trying to do what I think is a simple function in ITunes. I'd like to sort by "date added" and have the tracks line up sequentially by track number. In other words, when in Itunes, I'd like to have (from top of the library to bottom) my most recent album with tracks 1-10, listed, and then the next recent album and so forth. Almost like a most recent album. You can of course sort by date added, and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, but then when Ituns plays, you start on the most recent album, it runs through that album, and then is done.
    Any thoughts?

If you ever find the answer, I'd love to know as well. How odd is it that you can do this. I tried several searches for this in software hacks, and applications that let you alter icon views and the like. Can't believe the limited interest in correcting it either.
I was looking for a way to display screen shots of various jpeg elements with files names that double as instructions in a tutorial. Icon view allowed me to see pictures in a large enough size to use as instructions with the corresponding file names. All I would have had to do was screen shots assembled into a PDF and I would have been done. Having to retype every instruction along with copy, and pasting into a new document and so forth is more than double the work for any set of pictorial instructions.
Maybe Garage Band or some other application is the workaround until then. I'll let you know if I ever find a better workaround, or the solution.

  • How do I know the "date added" for a file ?

    Hello,
With Leopard, the folders in the dock can be sorted by "date added" (date when the file was added to the folder).
Does anyone know a way to know this date for a given file ?
I hope my english was clear enough :o)
    Thanks

Thanks for your answer, but in the view options, I only have the creation date and the modification. The "Added" is not available.
    Any idea ?

  • Computer died, how do you save iTunes data to a new computer?

My 17" laptop died and with it my complete iTunes library. Wile I have an iPod, 2 iPads, and two iPhones associated with this account, I do not have any one device with all of my data housed on it... Just the dead MacBook Pro. How can I retrieve my data... Or at least most of my data?

Pull the drive and plug it into a usb to sata/ide/whatever adapter.  Unless the drive is well and truly destroyed, it will all be there on the disk.
You'll need a device something like this, depending on the disk drive interface to go DIY.  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=774365&Q=&is=REG&A=detail s
It will be frustrating if you don't have enough expertise to sort it all out.  Now that you've been burned by having no backup, maybe it is time to consider dropping a couple of hundred bucks or less on a NAS.
