How to run a finished app in a simple way

Hey
Is there someone who can pass me some keywords, links or tutos on how to transforming my project (just .java and .class files so far) into an application that runs "on a mouse click". I'd like to have an Icon on the desktop (Windows e.g.) or provide the akin capability to run it also from a shell ( say, Linux Gnome Terminal) without the necessity of typing the "java" always in front.
What might be the best way to realize that?
Sure I could write a small script that runs "java myProject" on typing just "myProject" e.g. for bash (I don't know much about setting up an Icon yet) - but isn't there a general possiblity to (say) "create" an installer out of e.g. eclipse for all kinds of OS that have a running vm?
Would it help me to do a .jar out of my project? (Actually - for what is a .jar good for??)
I'd like to have

Why not just make an executable jar that will runon all the platforms
i can say this is impossible. Really? Then I have done the impossible!
I should just go home and rest on these laurels for a while. That'll be nice. Maybe pour myself a nice cup of chai.
u cannt have a
executable to run on all platformsNo, I think it's more accurate to say that "U" cannot have a executable to run on all platforms. For the rest of us, there's the executable jar.
so have scripts specific to platforms for invoking
your java application
like .bat on windows. But that's not a very elegant solution, eh?
Check out
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/jar/manifest/appman.html
and note that, at least on Solaris support for the .jar extension is built into the OS so it executes (more or less) like any other executable. Windows accomplishes this with file extension associations, and Mac OS supports it as well.

How to run an X11 app as a normal icon on the dock?
I don't want to have to go through the X11 app than up to the command, etc. I want it to run as a normal osx app

I've only got one X11 application, Wireshark. I have its icon on my dock -- I just dragged it to there from its location in the Finder. When I click on it (Wireshark's dock icon), X11 starts, then Wireshark starts inside X11's environment. Have you tried doing it that way with your app, or is Wireshark's behavior in that regard just a different animal from all the other X11 apps that are out there for Mac?

  • How to run an Automator app at a specific scheduled time?

    Hi all,
I know this question has been answered before, but the only info I can find on it is extremely dated.
How can I run an Automator app (rsync backup) at a specific scheduled daily time?

One way is to use launchd.  The easiest way is with Lingon (search in the App store)
Then in the run input box use "open" i.e: open "/users/tony/scripts/rsyncbu.app"

  • Best way to port all Windows XP files, applicaitons and data form my PC over to iMac and how to run those Windows apps on Mac?ns on Mac?

I have a Windows XP machine with apps, files and data.  I want to get all that over to my Mac, and also run those apps under Windows XP or even Windows 7 on my Mac.  Im wondering:
    1.  How best to get those files over to my Mac
    2.  How to run those apps and use my Windows based files/data on my Mac
    3.  How best to run Windows on my Mac....either partitiion my Mac's hard drive and boot up either Windows or MAC OS, or run some other program where I can easily switch back and forth form Windows to MAC OS, or perhaps get it all on an external hard drive, maybe partition that Windows/MAC OS and boot from that?
    Thanks!

I agree you would benefit by using virtualizaiton software. Virtual Box is one alternative the commercial apps for doing virtualization are Parallels and VMWare Fusion which you also might be interested in for their support and updates.
Also you may benefit by book marking and using:
Mac 101 , Switch 101 & Find Out How Video tutorials
For your MS Office apps then I'd STRONGLY recommend using the native Office For Mac versions, you can find these on Amazon for less than $100 and then you can run the apps natively rather than having to lean on MS Windows. Also for your Financial and Tax software you also may want to use OS X apps too, for example I used Quicken for over 20 years (PC mostly and some Mac) but switched to iBank. Also for tax software I have used Quicken's Turbo Tax, this also runs natively on OS X.
In other words for your stated needs I don't see much reason to stay with MS Windows. You may have other considerations, if you do please state them, some may be real issues and some may be easily overcome.

  • How to run Acceleraterometer sample app AppX ?

    Hello:
I got a sample code for using Accelerometer APIs from MS web site. I'm interested in the Windows version (not the phone version). I have rebuilt it but not sure which exe to run or how to run it. I double-clicked "AccelerometerCS.Windows.exe"
but got prompt saying this app must be run within an app container... What does that mean ?
    Thanks in advance
    Polaris

Which same you have? you can run it directly from windows. Otherwise when you have the appx you need to use the powershell that is included. You can also do this manually by using the commandlet add-appxpackage
to get the appx file you first need to create the package from visual studio

  • How to run Firefox OS apps without Simulator

Sorry, just making sure, but is there a way to run Firefox OS apps in Firefox WITHOUT the Firefox OS Simulator?
I have the Simulator (I actually have mutliple versions), but I would like to see if there is some way to "trick" Firefox into to thinking that it's Firefox OS so I could just go to the Marketplace and get apps.

You can install Firefox Marketplace Apps from your Firefox web browser itself! You can just visit the marketplace (https://marketplace.firefox.com/) and start using the apps. But few apps like cut the rope maybe only available on mobile phones (hence you may have to depend on simulator)

You could go with VB.NET except it is succinctly, SH1T! Even the poeple who wrote hate it so much they'd tell you to use C# instead. [reference required] Seriously, it's got none of the advantages of VB6, and all of the disadvantages. I think it was designed to fail.
C# is just like Java, except different ;-)
Actually Java and C# are match racing... That is the longer they are developed the more alike they become... ergo they're suffering the wind-tunnel effect... they're copying each others weaknesses. This is a car. This is a lunch box.

  • How to run Adobe Air App as Windows Service

I am working on Adobe Air application. Everything about coding and configuration have been good so far but I have some major road blocks down the road:
    1. Schedule my application to run at certain time.
    2. Run the application in the System Tray like a Daemon app
Does Adobe support for configuring the application to run in System Tray like a Gmail notifier app now? If it does, is it possible for me to have it configure for both Windows and Mac systems?
If anyone has any pointers or tips, please feel free to let me know. Thanks in advance.

Last night I got some time to try out your example from "Working with the dock and the system tray"
It is really impressive to see how easy you can animate the icon on the taskbar, but it doesn't particularly achieve my goal to have a cross-platform taskbar app running.
I tried to work with Java yesterday and got their Taskbar module working on both platforms. It solves the basic issue. But then I realize Java is missing the Webkits Adobe Air is offering. So I need two Apps in order to achieve the goal to re-use my web app on the desktop. Now I am considering to learn more about the extend feature you mentioned to let the Java application works like a remote control for the Air application's instances.
So here are some of my current concerns: is it possible to be able to have input from java app into air application's elements? Does Adobe's intergrated runtime support incorporating Java as part of the app like it does with SWF and javascript? Or is there any bridge I can use to have the two applications communicate with one another?

    1) In Visual Studio, create an appx package (Project -> Store ->Create App packages -> Not for upload)
    2) Zip up the folder of the app package
    3) Send to target machine
    4) Unzip app package
    5) Right-click Add-AppDecPackage.ps1 -> Run with Powershell (must be an admin)
    6) Follow prompts for install
    7) Enjoy

  • How to deploy the finished app (JSF)?

    Hi Guys,
may be the question is obvious, but I spent enough time fighting with this IDE, that I don't want to waste any minute more.
    The problem:
I prepared my web-app in JSF. Now I'd like to take it outside of the environment and run on a extern server (not started from Eclipse of course). but HOW?
Is it possible to generate a war? Do I have to copy my application manually from the workspace? What about the non-standard of the directories-structure (all in "web" directory: WEB-INF inside) and the deployment on the target-server? I would just like to take it to the for example Tomcat and just start it. but it doesn't work in this way..
Some hints? Many thanks in advance.
    kubek

Currently Workshop does not support creation of .war file. You can use the popular ant utility tool to build the war file.
FYI, most of the servers support exploded directory deployment - meaning no need to bundle in a war file. If you have created the web application using Workshop wizard then all the contents of "web" folder can be deployed (copied) to the server.
    Ex: Tomcat
    - Copy the content of "web" to tomcat-home\webapps<application-name>
    - start server
    - access http:\\localhost:8080\application-name
    OR
Alternatively, you can also deploy the application with the help of Tomcat's server.xml
    - Open <tomcat-home>conf\server.xml
    - include a context-element for your application
    <Context debug="0" docBase="/C:/workshop-home/eclipse/workspace/workshop-tour/site/" path="" reloadable="true" />
    - save file
    - start server
    - access http:\\localhost:8080\

  • How to run a Windows app from a PowerBook G4 using Tiger OS 10.4.11

HELP !!!! i have a training session tomorrow, and I need to run a Windows Application from my mac.
    is it possible?
I need to do it only once (initially, then I can purchase something).
    I use a PowerBook G4
I'm running Tiger OS 10.4.11 (not Leopard)
I don't need to run OS and Windows at the same time, just the Windows application
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I signed up for and downloaded Parallels for Mac and got the message "this app can't be installed on your machine, please check the requirements for your machine." But I couldn't find requirements anwhere.
ANY IDEAS ???" I really appreciate it!

If you have an Intel Mac and Leopard you can use various programs (like Parallels) that will let you do what you want.
With Tiger and a G4 PPC I think the only option is to get hold of a copy of Virtual PC and a copy of Windows that will work with it. Virtual PC is no longer produced so you'll have to look on the used stuff websites. I have never used VPC myself but I hear it is really slow, and of course since it is out of production it will probably only run some older version of Windows (not sure, maybe 98 or before?)

  • How to run a Java App

    Hi all you people,
Something bothers me, since I play around with Java, which is not very long. What is the best way to run a program? Java is platform independent. That means, different platforms - differnet ways to start a program. On Windows you usually have a little Icon, the same under Linux KDE etc. Doubleclick and away you go. But what I always read in most of the Java tutorials is "Start Command, go to directory, type 'java myclass'". There must be a better way to do this?
I am a VB programmer and if I compare the deployment tools in VB with my tools in Visual Age for Java 2.0 I must say, VB is way ahead in this area. I always say, things must be easy to use. For me that's the reason why e.g Linux isn't on most of the desktops. It is just too complicated to install. Is this the same with Java? Or is there a better way than 'java myclass' from the command line?
Sorry the post became a bit long. And sorry if this is a dumb question. I am new to Java.
    Cheers
    Peter

For Windows, a shortcut works. Create a shortcut that has a Target line "c:\windows\javaw.exe xxxx", and it starts a Swing app - without a DOS window appearing. The shortcut is just like any that's on the desktop.
Bat files work as expected. When you get a little more experience look into "executable Jars" - they can be set up to start an app by clicking on them. You can also exec a non-java program from java, you can...
    Well, you get the idea.

  • How to run executable Java app from command line: No Main( ) method

This is the opposite question from what most users ask. I have the Java source code and a running Java executable version of the program in a windows environment. I don't want to run it in the normal way by double-clicking on it or using the executable. I need to be able to run the same application from the command line. If I can do this, I can then compile and run the code on my Mac, too, which is what I am ultimately trying to accomplish.
Normally, this would be easy. I would look for a Main method, normally public static void main (String[] args ) or some variation. I cannot find a main() anything, anywhere when searching the files. There must be some windows executable that links to the Java classes. It's very clever, no doubt, but that's not helping me.
I am trying to run what I can determine as the Main class, with a standard command line call, but that is not working either.
It is a Java graphics program, so mostly Swing container stuff.
I am not finding a manifest.txt file, telling me where a main method is, nor anything about the Main Class. There is no readme file for the program.
Any insight that would point me in the right direction? What should I be looking for?
    Thanks in advance, Bloozman

It's possible there's a clever Windows executable that runs the class. But if it's a plain old Java class then there's a good chance there's a constructor. Look for that; it's possible you may be able to start by writing another Java class that creates an instance of your mystery class.
When you have that done, try running it. It's possible that just creating an instance might be sufficient to run it. Swing programs are sometimes written like that. If not, then start looking for methods with names like "run" or "go" or "start" that your little controller program can call.

  • How to run an AIR app from Javascript in browser?

Does anyone know how to do this?

What if you have a singleton class containing the list of items that were clicked on. When an item is clicked, it is added to the list of clicked items. Inside the renderer, access that object and check to see if the item being rendered is in the list, if it is, set the style to look like a visited link, if not set it to look like something not visited.
