How to setup iTunes on shared computer so others cant buy music at my expns

I want to use iTunes on my work computer (which other people sometimes use) without allowing others to purchase music on my credit card.
Background: I've been using iTunes at home for 2 years and had an iPod for 13 months. I like how iTunes works.
I staff an elementary school computer lab. I have 500-1000 mp3 files there that we've played in the past using Winamp or Windows media player. But I prefer how iTunes works and organizes music and I'd like to use it there.
I recently installed iTunes on my admin workstation at school and I am moving our music into its library. But many iTunes features will not work unless I set up an account with a credit card for automatic purchasing. If I do that, how can I prevent others from making purchases on my credit card?
Yesterday I signed in there using my apple id. But I notice that moved my shopping cart and that only two clicks will add purchases to my credit card.
I have a coworker who uses this computer every morning, and other teachers and students use it from time to time. I don't want them to accidentally make purchases on my credit card.
I do not plan to move my home iTunes library (about 6000 items) to the school computer nor to synch my iPod there.
So what should I do? Set up a new acct there with a credit card that I seldom use? Is there any way to require a password for purchases but not for using the iTunes library and store?

I think I will set up a separate acct name and
password, different from what I use at home.
> Don't do that.
You iTunes account is not linked to specific computer
or location.
If you set up a different iTunes account, you will
have songs from 2 different accounts you need to keep
track of.
There is no need to ever have to create a new iTunes
account. If you move, get a new ISP, change email
addresses, etc. just change your account to reflect
the new stuff.
Thanks, but I already did set up a new acct today, with a password required. I used a password that my job partner also knows and an old credit card I never use. I did that because I noticed iTunes wouldn't let me download there the weekly free music that I had already downloaded at home.
I thought there was a limit of 5 computers you can have music on. Is that right? I have shared a few purchased songs with my son and my uncle, which required me to authorize their computers. (ITunes said my uncle's was #4, which means there's another mystery computer somewhere authorized to play my music!)
I'd like teachers to be able to buy a song they need by giving me $1 and buying it on the spot, rather than expecting me to look for it at night at my home.
I think this will work. We'll see ...

Apparently I wasn't clear.  The music on my ipod is but a subset of all the music on my external hard drives.  I want to import only the songs and playlists from my existing ipod into the itunes library on my new computer, which currently has no music or playlists.  How can I do this?

When you connect the iPad to the computer can you see any apps in the apps list at all in iTunes?
Connect the iPad to the computer and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Apps Tab on the right.
Do you see apps in that apps list? If you do, click on all of the apps that you want to sync.
Click on the Sync Apps Heading.
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes

iTunes block my iPhone I can't buy music anymore

Hey, epoh, I haven't forgotten the long term solution for you, I just can't seem to find it in the user tips library. I know it was there, and I've asked some of the folks who have helped on this type of thing before to help me relocate it. Of course, they all decided they were "Irish" and (although it has nothing to do with being Irish) are still recovering from celebrations designed to make bartenders rich and breweries dry.
Hopefully they will be back soon. In the mean time, Rod has suggested two things. One would be taking a look at your account page (click on your account name when in the iTunes Music Store) and seeing if there isn't a way to reset it in the purchase history screen. I don't see anything like that there, but then again, I don't have anything stuck in my cart either
Give that a shot, then try deauthorizing your computer and reauthorizing it. I see where he is going with this one. It's quite possible that this action will get rid of anything that was hanging out under that particular account name.
Give these both a shot, and see if it doesn't shake that album loose. If it doesn't, I'm sure someone has a link to the fix I'm thinking of.

  • How will reinstalling itunes on a shared computer affect other accounts?

I have an iphone in recovery mode and I'm trying to restore it, however, every time I begin to restore it, iTunes quits. I've been told to uninstall and then reinstall iTunes on the iBook. However, it's a shared computer, I need to know if the other iTunes libraries on the other accounts will be affected negatively. Will the other account's data be erased? Should they back up their information? Or will nothing happen to the other accounts?

Will the other account's data be erased?
No. Your account's data won't be erased either.
Should they back up their information?
    Yes.
will nothing happen to the other accounts?
    Yes.

  • Original Computer crashed, setup itunes on new computer, how do I save my..

    app data?
Is it possible for me to transfer my ipod to a new itunes without losing all the data I have recorded in my applications? My old computer fried and I was able to save my iTunes by loading a backup onto my new computer, so all my old music and playlists are back, but I know as soon as I connect it, it is going to ask me to delete everything on the ipod and reload. When I do this, I assume I will also lose my app data. Is there a way to save it?

    Launch iTunes.
From the menu bar (top of your screen) click Store > Authorize This Computer
Now sync your iTunes media. Connect the iPhone. Select the iPhone under Devices left side of the iTunes window under Devices.
Select the content you want synced from the tabs, ie., Photos, Apps, Music, etc.
For Contacts, Calendars, Mail, Bookmarks and Notes select the Info tab.

  • How to setup iTunes for a classroom

    HI Forum...
I am an elementary school music teacher and am looking for an easy way to setup a lab of cast off computers and new ones combined. My intended use for this lab is to run listening stations via iTunes for kids to listen to songs on and answer questions and in the future use a program like Finale Note Pad which helps them write music. I have been going to each computer with a flash drive, deleting old songs, and loading the songs. I would like to do the following...
--load songs remotely, or have each computer access a different list of songs
--prevent the student computers from modifying info on the songs
--limit the access to other applications using parental controls (I have this one done, but it may interfere with some ideas)
These computers are all on the school's network and I would like to run them in Simple Finder and they can't have access to any other music but the music they need for the assignment. The kids using these will be as young as 2nd and 3rd graders and up to middle school so the appropriateness of the music and computer skills are a factor. What I have for the middle schoolers is not ok for the 8 year olds. I can either put on and take off songs (preferably by remote) or use different logins.
SO, here is the interesting part:
I am using 6 student computers
    4G4 macs running 10.5.8
          G4 Digital Audio running 10.5.8 1GB ram
          G4 Gigabit running 10.5.8 1 GB
          G4 933 MHz running 10.5.8 1GB
          G4 mirrored drive door running 10.5.8 1.5GB
    1 Mac mini running Yosemite
    1 I mac running 10.5.8
and the computer that has all the music files is my teacher computer, 2009 MacBook running Yosemite
there is also an iPad2 that the students are using
any way I can make this easy and remote? Am I going to run into problems with the max number of machines that can play the music?
    thank you
    joey

Create a master playlist on the teacher's computer and share it via regular library sharing over the network.  It will appear on each student's iTunes as a shared library.  Students cannot modify it.

  • How to setup iTunes on a PC to use existing music

My partner has a PC laptop provided by her work. She wishes to use iTunes with it but store her music on an external drive. We already have her previous iTunes library on an external drive, but we don't have the iTunes Library.itl file, etc.
My question is: how can my partner setup iTunes on her work laptop to use her previous iTunes library/music on her external drive?
    My concerns are:
Changing iTunes preferences and telling it the iTunes library is in a folder on the external drive does nothing. iTunes just ignores the music in this folder because the iTunes Library.itl file, etc on the c:/ drive don't know anything about it. (It's a new installation of iTunes.)
I've already tried importing the previous iTunes library. We chose the File > Library > Add folder menu (if I've got that right) but it only imported about 500 songs from the various folders. This tells to me that iTunes for PC is buggy - it cannot scan many folders, either wide or deep, to find songs in subfolders.
Windows may allocate a different drive letter each time the external drive is attached. For example, if my partner is not VPN'd into her work network then Windows may allocate a "lower" drive letter for the exernal drive than if she is logged into her work VPN.
I'd rather not have to reimport all the songs.
We have a copy of all her former iTunes library music on both an iPod Classic and an iPhone 4. Is it possible and better to import the music from one of these devices?
    Many thanks!

Although you can set up iTunes with the library on the C: drive and the media folder elsewhere there are, as you have found out, pitfalls with that approach. Ideally you would have access to the "old" library, complete with the .itl file and simply copy this onto the external drive. Failing that then I would recommend you build the library at X:\iTunes where X: is the current drive letter assigned to the external drive. Your media folder should be X:\iTunes\iTunes Media. If you deliberately assign a specific letter for your drive, perhaps M: for Media, then it should always be given that letter.
With your library redirected to the external drive, not just the media folder, if you do attempt to start iTunes with the drive not present iTunes will complain it can't find the library. Simply close iTunes, connect the drive and start iTunes again. All will be OK, no links will get broken, and you won't have to correct the media folder location.
    Regarding specific points
    1. Note, changing the media folder location only tells iTunes where to put new files that you rip, consolidate, download etc. It is not a command to scan that folder and add or replace the current content with what is found there.
    2. When using the File > Library > Add folder to library method iTunes will ignore any files for which it has insufficient security permissions. Check these and ensure your user account and system have full access to the entire drive. A drive moved from one system to another may well not have the correct settings.
    3. Dealt with above
    4. Sounds like things are broken now, I guess you'll need to do what ever works. For the stuff that is currently in the library first copy the current iTunes folder from C: to X:\iTunes. Now click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and continue to hold down the shift key. Choose the library on the external drive. Check the media folder has been reset to X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, edit if necessary. At this stage I recommend you have the Edit > Preferences > Advanced options  Keep iTunes Media folder organized turned on and Copy iTunes Media folder when adding to the library turned off. After fixing any potential issues with file permissions use iTunes Folder Watch to add in new files from your media folders and remove those that iTunes has lost track of. You can then either consolidate the content (creating duplicate copies of anything that is located outside of the iTunes Media folder which you will then need to tidy up) or use my script ConsolidateByMoving which does pretty much just what it says.
    5. If you really can't gain access to the backup media that is supposed to be on the external drive then see this post from forum regular Zevoneer for options on moving your iPod data back to your computer.

  • How to restore iTunes Library on computer from iCloud or other method after iTunes library suddenly becomes empty?

I just opened my iTunes on my laptop (which is considerably slow) and all of my music, apps, everything has been wiped for some reason ie. my library is completely empty. I'm not sure what caused this and I really don't care I just want my playlists, music, apps back so I can add more music and sync my iPhone with it again as normal.
I'm sure that all my music has been backed up to iCloud but I'm not sure how to access that from my computer and how to import it back into my library. I'm afraid to sync my phone and iPod now because I've read that this will wipe them completely again and they are the only places I can see my music/playlists so I don't want them to disappear from these devices also before I can restore everything on my laptop.
I logged into my apple ID again on my computer hoping that maybe my music would come up when iTunes was connected to my particular account but the library is still empty. Not really sure what to do and would appreciate any advice. Maybe I'm missing something really obvious here and if so could someone point it out, I won't be insulted! Thank you!

If your music is still in \Music\iTunes Music, I believe your library can be recovered by closing iTunes, then going to \iTunes and renaming iTunes Library.itl to something like iTunes Library.itl.old, then renaming the most recent previous library from your \Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries folder to Library.itl and moving it to \Music\iTunes.  But I would recommend you post your question over in the iTunes for Windows forum go be sure as they would have more expertise on recovering your iTunes library.

  • How do I authorize a new computer to play my purchased music on iTunes

I recently got a new computer. My previous computer has iTunes but is no longer able to access the internet. I was able to get my music library from my original computer to the new one. When I try to play music, I get a window asking me to authorize the new computer. I fill in the account and password and press the authorize button. It accepts the password then asks me to download iTunes 6.0. I downloaded and installed iTunes 6 but every time I try to play any of my music, it sends me to the music library to download iTunes 6 again.
How do I authorize this computer to play my purchased music ?
new computer is an HP m7590n running Windows XP Media Center 2005.

There were two icons. One was version 4 the other was version 6. When I used Version 6, it worked.

  • How to indentify an unknown shared computer showing in finder?

For quite some time I've been seeing a computer show up under shared in finder.  It appears as macbook-2cd86c.  When I click on it is states that I'm connected as a "guest".  I can identify my husband's MacBook.  If it helps to know, we both connect to the internet wirelessly and use AT&T UVerse.  I thought that maybe it be the name of the router, but we've changed it a few times and the name of the unknown macbook has remained the same.  We also both have iphones that sync to our respective computers.  Our network is WPA protected.  How can I indentify this unknown computer?

how do I find out the the number of the MAC address on my husband's Mac?
Applications -> Utilities -> System Profiler
On the left side select "Network"
On the top Right side select "Airport"
In the bottom Right look for "MAC Address"
Unless your Husband is using "Built-in Ethernet", then select that entry in the Top Right panel.
