How to shutdown oracle 8i?

Hi All,
I have oracle 8.1.7 on windows 2000. now i want to have a cold backup. How should i shutdown the database? i have done like this
disble all the database related service and restart the server now no service is running. is it enough to backup?

It is being extremly nice of you to atleast guide me in this regard.
I know Sybrand Bakker doen't like people who doen't like peoples who comes straight to post a new thread rather then going through the documents... Actually the reason is very clear to me now..... i am also in a very crunchy situation today because i have my concerns over to consistency of the backup and i want some one's help who has more experiance then me like Sybrand and that too very fast (documentation raeding take a lot of time) and may be other peoples also has similar kind of situations (someone say if situation is that much time bounded then why not raise a TAR but i have raised the three TAR's in last two days with severity 1 and the average time they take for first call is 20-30 minutes and after doing R & D for whole day yesterday i have decided to restore the backup)
Now my problem is solved because i have restored that drive first which contains the alert log file and after seeing it my worries are gone because it contain database shutdown msg before the backup is being taken.

if you looked a bit closer you could have found the link to 'Autostart oracle' <http://homepage.mac.com/ik_zelf/oracle/Personal12.html> where you can find a complete working setup.
MacosX does not run the shutdown scripts so the database is terminated by a normal kill.

I just want to know how to install Oracle Label Security in Oracle 10g Database EE.
I read in Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control Installation and Basic Configuration that Label Security must be installed before installing Enterprise Manager Grid Control.
I have Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1.0.1) on my Windows XP System, and I patch it to 10.1.0.3.

A little bit late in the project we have realized that we need to use Oracle partitioning both for performance and admin of the data. (Partitioning by range (month) and after a year we will move the oldest month of data to an archive db)
We have an object model with an main/root entity "Trans" with @OneToMany and @OneToOne relationships.
How do we use Oracle partitioning on the @OneToOne relationships?
(We'd rather not change the model as we already have millions of rows in the db.)
On the main entity "Trans" we use: partition by range (month) on a date column.
And on all @OneToMany we use: partition by reference (as they have a primary-foreign key relationship).
But for the @OneToOne key for the referenced object, the key is placed in the main/source object as the example below:

From the Oracle documentation: "Reference partitioning allows the partitioning of two tables related to one another by referential constraints. The partitioning key is resolved through an existing parent-child relationship, enforced by enabled and active primary key and foreign key constraints."
How can we use "partition by reference" on @OneToOne relationsships or are there other solutions?

Assuming an agent is running on the servers you want to monitor,
navigate to the Agent home page (Via setup --> Agent)
When in the agent home page select 'Add Database'and press [Go]
Assuming yopur database now gets recognized, select the Configure icon and enter the password for dbsnmp.
When done, press [Ok] to return to the agent home page.

How to configure oracle 9i server

I am a newbie to oracle. I need to configure oracle server for studying PL/SQL. I have SQL*Plus: Release 9.0.1.0.1 in it. I need a username and password on my localhost to login to it. I dont know how to run Oracle Database Server for it and how to create an user account. Could someone direct me how to do it? I just need to login to SQL Plus and study it.

Do yourself a favor and deinstall 9i. It is obsolete and currently in desupport.
If your intent is to learn Oracle then download 11g and use it instead.
Then go to Morgan's Library at www.psoug.org and you can use the index to find demos you can use to learn all basic functionality.
