How to stop 4.1 reimporting photos

After upgrading from 4.0 to 4.1, Lightroom insists on re-importing photos although the "Do not import suspected duplicates" is checked.
I have a number of 32 GB SD cards with hundreds of photos on them.  Since LR1, only the new photos are imported when set for "new" and "Do not import suspected duplicates"   With 4.1 putting in a chip with 20 new and 360 older photos ressults in all385 being imported  --  the first 360 being named whatever the name is -2.
If I erase allt he dash-2 photos and reimport the same happens.
If I reimport with the -2 still there I do not get a dash 3 -- the system remembers that the photo (in the case the 360 duplicates) have been imported already.  That has NOT happened in any previous release I have used.
Anyone else had that problem or have a work around?
Barrie

What you are seeing is the difference between "logical rotation" and "physical rotation"
Importing photos by direct copying using the finder will not be physically rotated on import.  I know that the photo import software that came with my Canon camera also does not perform a physical rotation.
Viewing a photo using Preview will use "logical rotation" based on the rotation information stored in the photo's EXIF data.  So a portrait picture will still appear correctly "upright" when viewed with Preview.
Pasting the same portrait photo into a program like Mail (which does not appear to be logical rotation-aware) will result in a "horizontal" picture rather than upright, which is what you are seeing.
What is required is that pictures be physically rotated when you need them to be.  Using a proper photo manager such as iPhoto fixes this problem for you.  I use a program called GraphicConverter which also has this functionality as I am not a fan of iPhoto.

  • How to stop iphoto from recovering photos that don't exist?

I just bought my iMac and transferred all my photos from my backup drive to the iphoto library. In organizing my photos I must have deleted photos or had some corrupted photos in the transfer. Now, every time I open iphoto is says it has recovered 75 or so photos, creates a folder for them, but it's empty. How do I stop it from trying to recovery photos that don't exist? I've searched and have found nothing. The folder generated by iphoto as a recovered folder is empty...

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Can you give me an idea of why this type of error occurred
Because of a minor glitch when iPhoto failed to clean up after an import.
why has this now corrected the error?
iPhoto should remove that Importing Folder at the end of the importing session. When you launched iPhoto again it saw the folder and (incorrectly) assumed there was an import in progress. Removing the folder means that iPhoto won't make that assumption.
There is no reason to assume that the problem wil recur.

  • How to stop Automatic import of photo stream photos?

Photos app is automatically importing every picture from photo stream. Even after deleting the photos in photo stream they are still showing up in the photos library. How do I stop auto import? There does not seem to be a way to stop this. It is saving every pic I take with my iPhone. I have to manually delete hundreds of photos I do not want .

On your Mac, how do you have the options in Photos > Preferences > iCloud set? Is either iCloud Photo Library or My Photo Stream checked?
On your iPhone, how do you have the options in Settings > iCloud > Photos set? Is either iCloud Photo Library or Upload to My Photo Stream set?
You will get the effect you mention if either both iCloud Photo Library options are set or both My Photo Stream options are set (or all four are set).

  • How do I stop mail compressing my photos?

How do I stop mail compressing my photos? I have set 'Actual Size' in Mail and still the photos are compressed to thumbnail size.
    I'm using Mavericks 10.9.2 on a 2011 iMac.

The best way is to use the Contextual menu application PhotoTool CM to losslessly rotate the photos before importing into iPhoto. Or use Xee, a free image editor with lossless rotation capability.
If your camera has the auto rotate feature turn it off and then follow the suggestion above before importing. That will rid iPhoto of the modified version rotated to the correct orientation.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How to stop using Adobe Photo Album Starter upon Sync

    Two questions:
    1. How do I stop the stupid Adobe Photo Album Start program from running every time I connect my phone? It takes forever to get up to speed, and now that I have over 1100 photos on the phone it always crashes.
    2. Doesn't iTunes allow me to sync the photos to my hard drive? I'd rather they just get backed up in a folder and be done with it.
    Thanks for any advice.
    Mik

Photos are in a special area on the phone that acts like any other digital camera (thus you don't sync them with iTunes).
You take them off via what ever default software you have for digital camera (appears to be that Adobe software).
Next time you connect....once done doing it's thing, go to My Computer. You should see the iPhone listed as a Camera/Scanner. RIGHT click on it and choose properties. On the next window there is a tab about Events or something like that. Choose it. There it lists what to do when it detects it connecting. Change it to Ask or whatever. From there on out, you will find it easier to use the built in Camera Wizard to just get photos off (or choose do nothing and then you can browse to it like a folder from the same location off My Computer and just copy them off)

Apple's Icloud with Yosemite and IOS8 on devices is suppose to do just that - synchronize between devices so when you get home the pictures you took with our devices will magically be on you primary computer.
You may also want to look into other "clouds" available -- including clouds you can set up yourself (WD offers make your own cloud - haven't looked into it as don't need it)
Thanks for the constructive feedback! iCloud sync generally works well, though I believe it's time-limited-- You'll have to import them to your library from the iCloud sync to make it "permanent" within a few months.  I'm also using CloudStation on my Synology NAS, and I use Dropbox on all my computers although not for photos, because I'm still using their free account. Keeping iPhoto libraries up to date is not generally an issue.  Though I admit 2 of my 3 computers are on Yosemite and I am using iOS 8, I haven't specifically explored the differences in iCloud behavior on the new versions.
The deleting comment is more around temporarily storing them in one iPhoto library, uploading to Facebook, then deleting from iPhoto without deleting from FB -- it's not so much about how to transfer the photos around.  It's pretty easy to shoot 15 or 20GB of photos in a day with a modern camera, and you might find yourself without an internet connection, or at the very least, too spotty to copy that much data overnight.
For example, on a recent trip, my workflow was to load photos from my RX-100 via SD card into my MacBook Air which only has 128GB of storage.
So I'd copy all photos to iPhoto, flag favorites, edit, add to FB album in iPhoto, let that upload, then export to disk, let that sync to my CloudStation folder back on my NAS at home in the US, then finally delete all un-flagged photos in iPhoto (the "rejects"). By the end of the trip, even the 15GB of all of the flagged, edited photos took up too much space (in addition to all of the originals I was storing on disk), so I deleted the Facebook sync so I that was able to delete them from iPhoto.
Of course, I kept all my originals, but those were in 3 places: SD card, CloudStation folder on my Air, and on my NAS back at home (plus any devices that were powered on and syncing to CloudStation).
This worked great in Iceland where I had 50up/50down internet, but not so great at an agriturismo in Italy where I was getting something like 50% packet loss on their point-to-point wifi internet connection!
When I get home, every single original picture goes onto my master iPhoto library on the Mac Pro at home, but I treat the libraries on my laptops as transient places for editing and uploading, then deleting.  This is not just a multiple-computer problem, though -- I am sure many users just wish to upload then delete, and never keep their originals.

  • How to stop photo stream uploading/downloading in the background

Does anyone know how to stop the iphoto upload/download as my broadband gets killed everytime I add photos to my mac.
Let me explain that I have a 6-8 MB down link but my uplink is only 0.2Mb really slow.  So when I quit iphoto I can't play any online games for ages as Photostream is taking up my complete band width.  Mainly due to the fact that it is also downloading the photos to my iPad and my wifes iPhone I just imported the photos off those two devices but photostream wants to put a second copy on the device. argh
please give me better control I want to upload the photos (shared library) to photostream but only when the iPhoto app is open so I have the choice of when my bandwidth is used. either that or make the upload only happen with the device is switch off / not used so if I open a network game the bandwidth is freed until the game is closed.
    thanks

    Add image to iPhoto Library
From where.  I don't think you can keep it mininmized when importing because if it runs into a duplicate it will present a warning window for you to make a decision in. Therefore, it will always be open when importing.
