That message means that the computer cannot see the printer on its network.
Is the printer directly connected to the computer with a USB cable, or is it a network printer (either wireless, or wired to the router with an Ethernet cable)?

I never unplug the external harddrive, and the error message comes up only occassionaly upon startup. Maybe the USB connection gets disrupted enough to cause the computer to see it as disconnected and then reconnected while the iMac is powered.

Agreed. I think it's pretty presumptuous of Apple to decide how we are going to use our computers.
Being able to use my U720 on the iMac would be quite handy in a number of situations. As it is, we're forced to use a router, (none of which support the U720 very well at this point)

TS4000 How to sync Reminders with iMac and iPhone?

I want to keep Reminders synced between my iMac and my iPhone. There aren't much in the way of instructions in the iPhone manual. Only to go to iCloud settings on both devices and make sure Reminders is turned on in both. I have an iCloud account and I have turned on Reminders in iCloud on both devices, but what I create on my iPhone doesn't show up on my iMac and vice versa.

Thanks. I had seen this page and done these things. Items created on my iPhone go to iCloud and I can see them there in my browser. But for some reason they don't come to my iMac and what is created on my iMac doesn't go to the cloud even though iCloud is turned on and signed in to my account and the appropriate boxes are checked in System Preferences. I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks a couple of weeks ago and so am just starting using Reminders, but I do try to read the instructions.

I have an iMac model 7.1 that has an Intel core 2 duo so shouldn't I be able to make it run in 64 bit mode? How? I am in 10.6.8 and it locks too often to be used. I tried the Terminal sudo systemsetup -setkernalbootarchitecture x86_64 but the Terminal said it wasn't a valid command, what can II do to get back to work and not have to buy a PC?

Hi Mike, my head exploded too around page 50. I had bought a used iMac from an official Apple reseller here in Holland. It had an old 250GB HD that was 2/3 full, I had to get my Apple software Logic pro 9 into the iMac, I had, in 10.5 been doing that by booting from an external 1TB HD. Many developers won't allow downloads to external HD's,music software developers I meant. SO the external was a working solution until Jobs died and the company changed policies. The Fire Wire which Jobs had gotten started was working beautifully and since I have many "music Sample libraries" which must be able to throw into a song whatever I tell Logic to use, it worked much better having the libraries on external HD's[all Fire Wire 1TB] so they could effortlessly stream the music samples into logic SIMULTANEOUSLY, since Snow Leopard they have all been trying to stream from the same single external boot HD and that doesn't work well in Logic Pro. I was getting the locked screen that almost everyone on these 77 pages[you are late to this but the original thread had reached 77 pages when I found it] was complaining about, I decided[no idea why] to try booting from the internal HD, even though it doesn't contain the music software I use for work. It boots fine and shows no signs of locked screen or crazy graphics, but I can't do my job from a 250GB internal HD. I am going to the Apple store today to ask the price of installing a new 1TB internal Hd and more RAMM, 4GB's in music streaming is a bit wimpy,and a nephew of mine wrote to me with a link to OWC and said look you can now buy two 3GB sticks of SDRAMM that will work in your old iMac, so that would settle the problems of a 4GB RAMM limit. I don't have the time or money to buy and set up a new mac with only one FW800 port,I can't just replace 4 1TB external HD's with new USB 3's, so having this old girl upgraded would be the only solution for me. I am glad to hear you can boot SL from an external, there must have been something else that was causing the problems but I have to work and ******* around with a locked up screen means no income. This iMac has a core 2 duo, not a core duo, kbHT3696, yes I just checked thats the right number, I posted a wrong number before,sorry, although searching the topic here would get you to that article which explains that my core 2 duo can be 64 bit,I even held down the 64 keys when booting this morning to see if it really was a core 2 duo and it worked,I am in 64 bit,but when I attached the external with the music software the screen locked again making me hold in the start button to shut it down,there is something there SL doesn't like but I have no time to mess with what SNow Leopard wants,it is supposed to be working for me,not the other way around,all clear now?

I just bought a new imac and I can't get my iphone to sync up. It keeps telling me to update my itune software to 10.5 or new. I already updated it, three times in the last half hour. I even reset my phone and tried again. After I downloaded the latest software, I even restarted my computer, but futile. The same message keeps popping up.

3.0: how to sync notes from iMac-- iPhone?

Each time I sync under 3.0, notes on my iPhone sync to the mail program on my iMac. But I can't seem to get notes that I create in mail on my Imac to sync to the phone, even when "Notes" is checked using "Replace information on this iPhone."
Is 3.0 Notes sync one-way only, from the phone to the computer?

This does not seem to be the case. Notes appear to sync from the iPhone to the computer, but not from the computer (i.e., Apple Mail) to the iPhone.
Has anyone figured out the fix for this?

How to sync contacts on iMac to iPhone?

My contacts in my iPhone 4 randomly disappeared this weekend...grrr. It was not backed up on iCloud and I can't find the last backup (besides one that was done tonight when I plugged my phone into my computer, after all the contacts disappeared).
Is there a way to sync the contacts on my iMac to my iPhone? This is what I've tried and it hasn't worked:
In iTunes, under "info", I clicked on "Sync Contacts"
Under "Advanced" on the same page, I checked off "Contacts" and then "Replace information on this iPhone"
I hit Apply and it said it was syncing
Nothing happened on my iPhone

Turn contacts off and then on again in your iCloud settings on your iPhone. When it askes to you to keep or remove the current on on the phone.(if there are no contacts on the phone then say remove) and always ok the merge with iCloud. If the doesn't resolve the issue try deleting your iCloud account and then add it again.

How to sync phone to (new) computer and keep everything on it the same?

I want to put music onto my iphone (the music is on my laptop, and on itunes).
When I connect my iphone to my laptop it asks me to set it up as a new iPhone.
I cannot risk losing any of my data on the phone (eg. contacts, messages, notes, apps, etc).
The phone is connected to my icloud account, and everything is checked to be saved on icloud.
On the computer there is no option to restore from the icloud account.
Do I restore from the icloud account via my phone (and then will it sync the music onto my phone via computer?)? Or set it up as a new iphone via my laptop?
The end result I need to have is for the phone to remain the same (apps, information, contacts, etc.), except with my music (that is on my laptop) playable in the music app.

This is assuming all the music on your iPhone is from iTunes, if not, get iTunes Match.
When your phone is connected to the computer, right click the icon of your phone under "devices" and choose "transfer purchases"
This should pull everything you have from the app store/iTunes store on your computer
Transfer pictures over manually using image capture, iPhoto, or from your autoplay option on a windows computer
Once everything on your computer matches your phone, you can go ahead and sync
Whenever you sync from the computer, remember that "syncing" pretty much means your phone will mimic the computer
iCloud will back up your text messages too. Don't worry. If you want to go the iCloud route, your music on your computer would either need to be iTunes purchases or you need to be using iTunes match.
To restore from an iCloud back up, you'd have to erase your phone by going to settings>general>reset>erase all content and settings and choose "restore from iCloud back up" when the phone prompts you. Note: this will restore your phone to factory and kick it into the set up assistant, so triple confirm that iCloud user in
I'd recommend the easy route and just getting your computer's music coded over to iTunes purchases (with iTunes match) if it isn't already. That way, you can just download it on your phone through the iTunes app.

Cleaning caches and cookies generally is a waste of time and will not speed up a computer, in fact it will slow down. So why do you feel the need for cleaning caches and cookies? Your iMac is not an 10 year PC, if left alone in most cases OS X runs extremely well.

How to sync phone and photos to recover 2k lost pictures

i dont know exactly if i deleted all of my pictures or if they vanished with my last update... hard to say but i had about 2400 pictures...
they are however on my iphone and im curious to see if i sync my phone and computer if it will import them all back in??
i haven't tried it because i dont want to take a risk and losing them with out finding out first!

When I connect my iPod Touch to my MacBook, and I have any pictures on the iPod that aren't on my MB, iPhoto opens and allows me to import them. They are in a file called Saved Photos on my iPod. Other than that, syncing takes place through iTunes so if you plug in your iPhone, goto the Photos tab in the iTunes syncing window and have your collection sync with your MacBook.
I don't imagine that an update can make your photos vanish but needless to say, if you don't have a backup of your photos (Time Machine, CCC, SuperDuper, other backup tool...) you always run the risk of losing then off of your HD at any time.
Do you use iPhoto? Did you look for the folder +iPhoto Library+ on your MacBook?

If you mean "How do I mange e-mail and/or files between two or more devices"? You have to get organized.
If you have POP3 mail it's somewhat complicated: you set your "traveling machine" to receive (but not remove from the e-mail server) new messages. Realize that if you reply from the traveling machine that message will not show up anyplace but the sent box of the machine from which you sent the reply (you can export/import sent messages via a jump/thumb drive back to the desktop when you cease traveling). If you delete a message from the traveling machine you may/or may not have it also deleted from the e-mail server. All those choices or options are sent in e-mail behavior or options (what it's called/where its found depends on your choice of e-mail client)
The desktop machine is set to download messages from the server. When you are traveling the e-mail client must not be started or running (or you may miss messages on your traveling machine because they were downloaded at home before you turned on your traveling e-mail). Once get home you start your e-mail download all messages still left on the server - delete duplicates and import your sent messages.
If you have an IMAP4 e-mail client it's much simpler you set up the traveling machine to leave all the e-mail on the e-mail server. You will see all the "new" messages AND when you get home you can have the Desktop see/download your mail sent from the traveling machine as the traveling machine was acting as a "terminal". Again exactly how you do this depends on your choice of e-mail client.
For files you would keep a copy (or backup) on iCloud, or you could keep all your work organized in folders that can easily be transferred to jump/thumb drives or accessed through file sharing on your home network.

Help has arrived to assist you with getting those contacts on both your devices. The Verizon cloud service is definitely a great tool to use and you can also use Apple iCloud as well. When you sign into the Verizon cloud on your iPad does it give an option or message to restore?

Need help with iMac intel desktop - Mac mail consistently going OFFLINE

I need help with Mac mail - it is frequently going "offline" and requesting me to "take all accounts online". My internet is working. It's been checked, checked and checked. Sometimes it just takes a reboot of the system and the modem to kick it in and make the little triangle symbol go away, but should I have to reboot daily? I have the Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 installed. Is there a bug here or am I supposed to upgrade to Mavericks? Any help is most appreciated.

For me this is an issue caused by my email service provider. When they are slow to respond or to accept the password Mail takes that as a password rejection, and prompts me to reenter password, and eventually goes offline.
