How to ungroup Illustrator graphics in InDesign

I have a Illustrator file, containing a set of images (such as a set of different colored balls). I need to ungroup the Illustrator file after placing it in InDesign. I am unable to do this as, the Object > Ungroup option is grayed out. I can ungroup the file, and split up the image in other software, such as Inkscape or Scribus. Is there any way to ungroup the image in InDesign ?

Inkscape is an open source software similar to Illustrator - and would be able to open certain Illustrator files - but it has major draw backs in colour management.
Scribus is an open source software similar to InDesign - but without as many great features as InDesign and the Colour Management side of it isn't great either.
Opening Illustrator files in other software is rarely a good idea - it can have many reprucussions that you wouldn't even be aware of and not visible until you get the printed versions back - or something goes horribly wrong and it's too late to take it all back.
If you want to ungroup items then you should do it in Illustrator.
Move the various items to new layers.
Save as .ai with a pdf compatible file.
In InDesign - use the File>Place choose the file
And use the Object>Object Layer Options
And select the layers you want to use.
Other than that - opening in Inkscape and Scribus and ungrouping there is doing untold damage to your Illustrations.
Keep it in Illustrator and use that - and InDesign
They are designed to work together!

Scaling linked Illustrator graphics in InDesign

Hi there
I was under the impression that the original dimensions of an Illustrator graphic were of little significance when placed in InDesign, since InDesign recognises it as vector artwork (and shows it as a PDF file in the Links panel with no ppi values, and preflight checks show no problems). I'm having a hard time convincing my colleagues of this, however, and they insist on resizing the graphic in Illustrator before placing it in InDesign.
Are they being a bit silly, or am I mistaken here?
I'd appreciate any helpful information, and would be interested to hear in more depth exactly what's going on when the graphic is placed and how InDesign handles and resamples the information.

I'm aware of the scaling of strokes and styles that you mentioned, and I appreciate that sometimes (when working with type that needs to be consistent, for example) one would want to get it exactly right in Illustrator first. However, in the few instances I am thinking of we have been working with very simple illustrations that don't contain any type or strokes or styles that would be adversly affected by scaling.
My colleagues have been trained to select the content of the graphic and check in the control bar to see that it hasn't been scaled to more than 120 percent. If it has they get uneasy and do a resize in Illustrator (without paying any attention to styles etc., just a simple click and drag bigger). I rather use the Info panel to check the Actual and Effective ppi, and use the preflight to double check when I'm in doubt.
As I said, though, I'm having a hard time trying to convince them that the greater-than-120-percent scaling they're seeing is no cause for panic (with Illustrator graphics).

Be aware CS6 Applications ARE NOT the most recent applications.

Illustrator CS2 and InDesign CS2 not starting - here is how it was solved.

This document is merely a compilation of information found at the sources named at the bottom of this document.
Basically running older Adobe CS2 Software on a MacBook Pro 10.6.x Snow Leopard - probably like many of you that either can't afford the upgrade to CS3, CS4 or CS5, or maybe don't see the need to do so. It's running good but it is slow since it is using Rosetta, but it does work - well, used to work.
Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2, etc. were all running fine after the upgrade to Snow Leopard (under 10.6, 10.6.1 and 10.6.2). Then the update to 10.6.3 was installed. At the same time a bunch of other updates - including the Acrobat 8.2 update - were installed. Not really sure what did it, but all of a sudden Illustrator CS2 stopped responding at the start up screen - no longer started up and InDesign CS2 popped the registration/licensing screen. When trying to enter license info on first key press the application quit entirely.
So maybe the 10.6.3 update was the culprit. Never even thought that it could be the Acrobat 8.2/8.2.1 updates. Then I found this thread here:

Right or Control click and select 'Get Info' on the Mac folder in “ /Library/Application Support/Adobe/TypeSpt/Unicode/Mappings/”, which you have copied from the .dmg file attached to this document.
Verify that under 'Sharing and Permissions' all users listed have no write access
If a change is required, click the padlock symbol and provide your Administrator credentials
Select the user which has Write access and change it to 'Read Only'.
Ensure the user 'Everyone' is set to 'No Access.
To check if the issue has been solved, launch Acrobat 8.2 and then Illustrator or InDesign CS or CS 2.

Even after following the instructions still "no love" from Illustrator CS2 or InDesign CS2. InDesign did no longer show the registration screen, but it didn't continue launching, and Illustrator progressed further along in the start up sequence but also never finished launching.
Then I found another article on the adobe site. I am just quoting the part performed and which ultimately did the trick.

3. At the Finder, choose File > Find.
4. TypeAdobeFnt10.lst (Illustrator CS2), select the system drive, and then press Return.
5. Delete all AdobeFnt10.lst files found.

7. Restart Illustrator. Illustrator creates a new Adobefnt10.lst or AdobeFnt07.lst file.

Illustrator CS2 stopped working for me on Snow Leopard as well. What it all boiled down to was not to update to 12.0.1. Not sure which release of Snow Leopard I was on when I figured that out but I keep up-to-date, am now at 10.6.6 and CS2 still works fine. I keep getting prompted to update to 12.0.1 from time to time but just cancel it.
I'm fairly sure I was at 12.0.1 already when I moved from Leopard to Snow Leopard and it was that, not a Snow Leopard update, that "broke" CS2 12.0.1. If I remember correctly, if you now try to apply the update, it won't go through with it anyway.

Probably you have inserted files in a frame whose content was previously adequate with "Fit Content Proportionally" or "Fill Frame Proportionally".
The new content in the same frame will have the same characteristics as the previous one

My AI file size was not going under 1 MB even by deleting extras so what I did is I opened a raster small image of 100 kb with Adobe Illustrator. then deleted the image and saved the file as AI. Then I Copied the whole vector content of original AI file that was bigger then 1 MB with ctrl+c command and pasted it in the new file created with raster image. and saved it. Wow the new file size is only 137 kb now.

You could use the Group objects and iterate through all page items of the group, single out the text frames and access their Texts object and their Tables object within.
By starting with a Group object (in the following snippet the group is selected):

I have read the long help document on how to make an index in InDesign CC 2014.1 using a topics list, and still can't work out what to do.
I have done a 548 page book, using a document for each chapter, and a book file to put them all together in the right order.
I now need to make an index at the back, as the author has many quotes throughout the book at the start of each chapter and section.
I have a list of those people quoted and want to upload this list and get the index feature in InDesign to find all instances of the name occurring in the entire book.
After reading the help document I still cannot work out how to do this.
My questions are:
1. Do you have to use an InDesign document as a source for the list of topics? If so, should the document be added to the book file or outside it?
It seems a bit recursive to have the list of topics in an ID document that is in the book file.
2. Once you have uploaded the topics into the Index feature, how do you get it to look for all instances of that 'topic' througout the entire book? I can't figure that out from the help documents. What do I select? Do I do it from the Index panel? Do I highlight the text in the source document? Not sure how to do this...
3. I need the names to list surname first of the quoted authors in the index. This command seems to be different between various editions of ID. For ID CC 2014.1 is it ctrl+alt+shift+]
4. To make the surname show first, what do I highlight? The topic? and then do ctrl+alt+shift+] and select find all as well? Or do I have to just go through the text and manually do this and ditch the idea of uploading topics first?
I am confused as you can see and any help with this is appreciated.

Anyway, as Justin mentioned, if you have an index on ename, it may be used when doing a comparison predicate statement with the ename value.
What it depends on are several other things: stats, how many rows in the table, use of an index hint, etc.
Rather than questioning the group on this, why not just turn on autotrace and run the query for the different scenarios.
The output will show you if it used the index, number of rows returned, blocks read, etc.

Hi,
You can pass the image url as a href attribute=> file:///Users/me/Documents/my_pic.jpg directly within your xml. It just needs that you pass a local, static and valid url.
If you want to add image later once the xml is flowed and so target specific nodes and inject images, it's a bit more complex. If the node is not part of the layout, you may try to reach the XMLElement objet and such an attribute, then layout the element.
var x = some XMLElement
x.xmlAttributes.add("href","file:///Users/m/Documents/my_pic.jpg" );
If already placed, then you have to get the associated pageItem, then place your file into it.
pagItm.place ( File ( "/Users/m/Documents/my_pic.jpg" ) );

Need direction on how to make motion graphics -AF CS5

I didn’t know how to word the header for my question so I’ll try to clarify it here. I’m new to AF so please bear with me. In the Adobe tutorial at the link below, he animates a flower. The flower is in front of a colored background and there are some added text that animate as well. I understand about layers but my question is, can I make a graphic like the one in the tutorial in Photoshop CS5 and import it into AF? I just ordered a copy of PS CS5 and have not gotten a chance to work with PS. When I searched the net about my question, I found many links describing how to make web graphics. Would I be making the same thing and saving them not as a web graphic? If I can make something similar to the flower in the tutorial, then I can go from there. I guess what is confusing for me is that the background and flower assets are mp4 (mpeg) video.
