How to UNinstall Java Web Start?

How can I uninstall Java Web Start from my computer? I have Java 2 Runtime Environment, and the option to uninstall it appears in my Add/Remove programs menu, but I'd like to leave Runtime on and just remove Web Start. How can I do this?

As of JRE 1.4.2, Java WebStart is part of the JRE and can't be uninstalled separately.
Why do you wish to uninstall it?

I believe you can add it to default-web.xml file located in your server config dir.
(i.e. /opt/SunAppServer8/domains/domain1/config/default-web.xml)

i want to debug a JWS app with eclipse, not java console, so I follow Unofficial Java Web Start/JNLP FAQ(http://lopica.sourceforge.net/faq.html) and still not worked.
the attached session worked at first and broke soon, and I found some idea from Unofficial Web Start FAQ Update/Errata(http://lopica.sourceforge.net/update.html). I did the following:

the debugger still gets detached. I don't know what's wrong.
JWS has come out for many years, I still found so many undocumented skills, even netbeans5 doesn't support it. Sun want to give up java?

Mindu,
WebStart will work with EJB. I use it with WebLogic Server. You have to make sure and deploy the weblogic.jar file - sign it if needed.

Java Web Start and the Mac OS

I am new to the Mac OS and to Java Web Start. Using Java Web Start to launch a Java application on the Mac is discussed in several of the posts here. However, in the requirement section of the Overview for Java Web Start says
"Requirements
Desktop/Client requirements:
The client machine requires support for the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), version 1.3 or later. Java Web Start is available for Windows 98/NT/2000/ME/XP, the Solaris Operating Environment, and Linux."
As you can see, Mac OS is not mentioned. Yet Java Web Start exists on my Mac. Am I looking at the wrong documentation? The document is located at

You are looking in the right place alright. The reason OSX is not mentioned in the document (or, by extend, any of the official sun documents) is that sun does not (may not?) provide an official java release on OSX. Java on OSX is implemented by Apple (and much to the dismay of both users and developers, they are not doing a very good job). Still, Apple's java usually fulfills the same specifications as the official sun java, so you can take any one of sun's documents on webstart or any other technology and it will usually work on the Mac. You just can't expect sun to assure that a technology will work on a platform they have no control over...

I'm running XP Pro via Wi Fi to a Linksys Wi Fi router to a cable modem... I'm also running Zone Alarm (tried turning it off but no luck)

OK, on my XP Pro system I went to...
Start IE -> Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings -> Proxy Settings
This is my 'Local Area network (LAN) Settings panel...
- user Proxy server for LAN is checked
- Address is blank
- Port is blank
So do I plug something in here... the ip address of my linksys wi-fi router and a port number or what?
My Java Web Start Preferences won't let me click 'Use Browser' only None or Manual
If I click Manual, I don't know what to plug into the HTTP Proxy and HTTP Port fields...
I tried the ip address of my router... thinking it may have a built in Proxy Server... and port 8080 as indicated by the Help page for the Java Web Start... but no luck.

Im trying to open the help file of my application.
When trying to access the help file from the GUI (pressing F1 for launching the help file), I'm geting the an error, something like:

It seems that the file which is packed in a jar, was downloaded to the Java Web Start cache directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USER%\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\javaws\cache\http\Dlocalhost\P7001\DMwebstart
The code which is activated when launching the help file is:

The function "RuntimeUtil.launchFile" knows how to launch any file in its default application, and indeed it does launches the html, when giving it an absolute path to the file on my PC, as "C:\Helpfiles\MyHelpFile.html" as such:

I found these restrictions regarding web start:

*Rule 1: Java Archives only. No loose files.* All your resources have to be packaged in Java Archives (jar) if you want to have
them delivered to the user's machine and kept up-to-date automatically by Java Web Start.

Absolute file paths won't work because you never know where Java Web Start

How to run 64-bit native code with Java Web Start

This question has probably been asked many times, but I couldn't find anything in my searches.
How can I get Java Web Start on a Solaris client (Solaris 10 in this case, with JRE 1.5) to run a java application that includes a 64-bit native code library? The application downloads fine, including the jar file that has the native shared object, but when the native library is loaded by the java application, I get a "wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64" error.
I assume that is because Web Start is invoking the 32-bit java VM, which can't load a 64-bit library. I tried configuring Java Web Start to use the 64-bit VM (by setting the path to java to ".../jre/bin/sparcv9/java" in the javaws console) but then I get an error that says "Can't load library: .../jre/lib/sparcv9/libdeploy.so".
Does Java Web Start support 64-bit native code, and if so, what do I need to do differently?

No it can't. On the Sun download page of the JRE it says that 64 Bit systems need to use the 32 Bit JRE to execute Plugins - this might be the same for Web Start apps.

How to solve the certificate problems in Java Web Start

Hi, All,
I encounted these two problems recently:
(1) I have an application which is supposed to be started by Java Web Start. I have written my own code which calls other .jar files from other companies. Since for web start, you need to sign all .jar files if you want more permssions. Now I got the following problem:

JAR resources in JNLP file are not signed by same certificate

How to go around this? It seems that the .jar files from that company has been signed already. Then I tried to uncompress those jars and re-archieve again, then sign it again using the keystore I used to sign my own .jar files. It still does not work. Any help on this will be appreciated!
(2) Afterr I signed a .jar file, when I want to run it again, using command: java -jar abc.jar
It does not work any more, I am not sure whether it will become a problem if loaded by Web start.

I've been trying to make a Java Web Start application, I finished everything, but when I click on the link which is connected to the jnlp file, it only displays the XML code in the explorer instead of running the program. But if i download the jnlp file and double click it, it starts the Java Web Start. Anyone can tell me how to fix this?
I thought may be JRE installation, but I tried to click on some sample on the web, it works fine for other Java Web Start application, but not mine.

Does your webserver know about JNLP? You need to map the .jnlp extension to "application/x-java-jnlp-file".

How to convert existed standalone APP to java web start app?

I didn't find useful information about how to convert an existed java
app into app which can be launched using java web start from the sun java developer's guide.
I have designed a simple java applcation and want to lauch this program with

How to package/inlcude C++ .exe and .dll files in a Java Web Start App?

I have a Java Web Start application that runs fine if the application is only 1 .jar file.
But I have a need to also run C++ .exe and .dll file from my Java application.
I wonder if someone could please tell me how to package/include C++ .exe and
.dll files in my Java web start application?

You need to place the EXE and DLLs inside the jar.
Java cannot execute them from the jar. They have to be extracted (see Class.getResourceAsStream) from the jar and copyied into the target machine file system, perahps to the temp directory. Now you can execute them using Runtime.exec() or ProcessBuilder.start().

Can anyone tell me how can I check what version of java web start is installed on the client and display a message if the client has not the good version ?
I mean:
I'd like all people running my application use java 5 and if someone using java 1.4 try to run the application get a nice screen telling him to download the latest version of Java Web Start.
Is this possible ?

Of course, I put this on my jnlp file,

</resources> But even with that, it doesn't display a nice message but a kind of exception instead.

You can very easily add a JScrollPane manually between the Applet and your content. Perhaps it would be beter if javaws did this automatically. In the browser, an applet can be any size. In Java Web Start an applet is directly contained within a JFrame, so it cannot be smaller than the minimum size of a JFrame, or Larger than the max.
