How to debug java web start with jdk1.5?

i want to debug a JWS app with eclipse, not java console, so I follow Unofficial Java Web Start/JNLP FAQ(http://lopica.sourceforge.net/faq.html) and still not worked.
the attached session worked at first and broke soon, and I found some idea from Unofficial Web Start FAQ Update/Errata(http://lopica.sourceforge.net/update.html). I did the following:
set JAVAWS_TRACE_NATIVE=1

copy command line from popup window.

the debugger still gets detached. I don't know what's wrong.
JWS has come out for many years, I still found so many undocumented skills, even netbeans5 doesn't support it. Sun want to give up java?

Mindu,
WebStart will work with EJB. I use it with WebLogic Server. You have to make sure and deploy the weblogic.jar file - sign it if needed.

How to debug when Web Start keeps closing

Hi,
I'm trying to deploy a simple hello world application. I've
created and signed the jar. When I run the application via
Web Start, I get as far as a window asking if I trust the
person, and I click yes. Then Java Web Start immediately
closes with no useful information.
Is there a log file somewhere? Is there a debug mode in

using at least javaws 1.5.0, go to the control panel and select advanced tab, trace on. Then create file . home directory called .javawsrc and add lines:
TraceBasic=true
TraceSecurity=true
TraceTemp=true
then run again.
you shoul get trace files in the log dir <deployment.user.home>/log.

How to UNinstall Java Web Start?

How can I uninstall Java Web Start from my computer? I have Java 2 Runtime Environment, and the option to uninstall it appears in my Add/Remove programs menu, but I'd like to leave Runtime on and just remove Web Start. How can I do this?

As of JRE 1.4.2, Java WebStart is part of the JRE and can't be uninstalled separately.
Why do you wish to uninstall it?

How to add Java Web Start MIME type to Sun Java SYstem Application Server?

I read in the document that I had to add "application/x-java-jnlp-file JNLP " to a configuration file.
Does anyone know where that file is for Sun Application web server( vesion 8, on WIndows)?

I believe you can add it to default-web.xml file located in your server config dir.
(i.e. /opt/SunAppServer8/domains/domain1/config/default-web.xml)

Hi, this dind't help.
I can resolve host name, so it looks like DNS works:
If I typed: <IP address> or localhost or localhostname.local or hostname I stiil get the default OS X web page with services, but no service is available not I can't connect to FCS web start page.
I didn't change DNS records - it is default as it was after installation of system and FCs.

Weblogic with Java Web Start

I am trying to do an example of application with JWS, but in my example the server is Tomcat, because I did not found an example to do with Weblogic.
So I want to know where I have to configurate my server to set my application as a JWS application, to be donwloaded fo another application.

First Java Web Start download doesn't update, second time does

I'm using Java Web Start with our application. This release we upgraded to java 1.5 from 1.4. Now I have a few PCs, not all, that do not get updates the first time they launch the application. But when the launch it the second time they get the download. The jnlp didn't change between releases? Any suggestions? I'm not using lazy loads, in fact I'm using the default which should be eager.

I have similar situation. At the machine is installed Java 1.6 u1. Setup first version of application. After deploy second version of application and run application start update, but console show that application use old packages. At the same time main package is uploaded? I'd try to use <update check="always"?> but there are no positive result.
At the same time then installed Java 1.6 u2, all works fine.
Any suggestion, how it could be resolved, without Java 1.6 u2 installation?

Java Web Start and JAAS

Has anybody tried to use JAAS in an application launched via Java Web Start?
I'm experiencing problems with it. (The application works fine when being launched directly on the client.)
If somebody already successfully tried, please let me know.
Do I need to modify tags in the JNLP file? Do I need to re-configure my webserver or servlet engine?

OK I got a response from the Java Web Start engineering folks. It sounds like using JAAS directly, to login to an ejb app server or whatever, is out of the question with Java Web Start on JDK1.3:

FYI our workaround: We use a SOAP servlet as a proxy for the app server and we've defined a SOAP xmlrpc api between our client and the application server. This has the advantage of being able to get thru firewalls, as our variant of SOAP is transported on HTTP. Java Web Start installs and starts the SOAP client.
I would hope the JWS folks would search the Sun provided services and see which ones ignore the current thread's class loader and fix them.

Java web start error running Asset Editor or any jnlp page

When I try to launch Asset Editor or Import/Export or any of the jnlp pages that runs using Java Web Start, I get an error. Java 7 Web start starts but It throws “Could not connect to Server. Please check your Java Web Start and Browser proxy settings”.
I read conflicting opinions on the internet as to what version of JRE/JDK is needed and potentially some issues running Java Web start with Java 7. I have 64-bit java 1.7.0_45 JDK/JRE installed and no other version. I tried installing 32-bit 1.7.0_45 as well. I have tried to run it from 32-bit as well as 64-bit browser also. All situations provide the same error.
However, when I install JRockit, it seems to work fine. But we cannot use jrockit. We have to use IBM JDK/JRE 7 eventually. Currently, the java web start does not work on Oracle Java as well as IBM JRE.
Any help is much appreciated.

I found a solution for this problem. We have to apply patch 17634436.

Custom classloader fails when using Java Web Start

Hope you can help me with a problem that is driving me nuts. I have implemented my own classloader to support plugins. This classloader works as follows:
1. The classloader is configured to access a plugin components jar file downloaded by jws.
2. The plugin components jar file contains other jar files which contains the actual plugin code to be loaded using my own classloader.
3. Upon initialization - my classloader extracts all jar files contained in the plugin components jar file into temporary files.
4. These temporary files are used by my classloader when defining plugin classes.
The classloader works fine when not using java web start. Then I launch the application using java web start with security policy in .jnlp file set to:

Does anyone have source code for implementing a simple class loader that can be used with Java Web Start (preferrably with all jar files to be used by the classloader wrapped into a jar file)

If you implement your own classloader, and then still run with a SecurityManager installed, then your ClossLoader is responsible for asigning the permissions to the code it loads.
You need your ClassLoader to extend SecureClassLoader, and implement the method :
SecureClassLoader.getPermissions(CodeSource cs) to return the PermissionCollection you want.

Java Web Start and the Mac OS

I am new to the Mac OS and to Java Web Start. Using Java Web Start to launch a Java application on the Mac is discussed in several of the posts here. However, in the requirement section of the Overview for Java Web Start says
"Requirements
Desktop/Client requirements:
The client machine requires support for the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), version 1.3 or later. Java Web Start is available for Windows 98/NT/2000/ME/XP, the Solaris Operating Environment, and Linux."
As you can see, Mac OS is not mentioned. Yet Java Web Start exists on my Mac. Am I looking at the wrong documentation? The document is located at

You are looking in the right place alright. The reason OSX is not mentioned in the document (or, by extend, any of the official sun documents) is that sun does not (may not?) provide an official java release on OSX. Java on OSX is implemented by Apple (and much to the dismay of both users and developers, they are not doing a very good job). Still, Apple's java usually fulfills the same specifications as the official sun java, so you can take any one of sun's documents on webstart or any other technology and it will usually work on the Mac. You just can't expect sun to assure that a technology will work on a platform they have no control over...

How to run 64-bit native code with Java Web Start

This question has probably been asked many times, but I couldn't find anything in my searches.
How can I get Java Web Start on a Solaris client (Solaris 10 in this case, with JRE 1.5) to run a java application that includes a 64-bit native code library? The application downloads fine, including the jar file that has the native shared object, but when the native library is loaded by the java application, I get a "wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64" error.
I assume that is because Web Start is invoking the 32-bit java VM, which can't load a 64-bit library. I tried configuring Java Web Start to use the 64-bit VM (by setting the path to java to ".../jre/bin/sparcv9/java" in the javaws console) but then I get an error that says "Can't load library: .../jre/lib/sparcv9/libdeploy.so".
Does Java Web Start support 64-bit native code, and if so, what do I need to do differently?

No it can't. On the Sun download page of the JRE it says that 64 Bit systems need to use the 32 Bit JRE to execute Plugins - this might be the same for Web Start apps.
