How to use built-in iSight & external Firewire iSight simultaneously?

The solutions I've found here and elsewhere, about launching iChat first so it "controls" the internal iSight and will force the firewire iSight to work, does not work. With Quicktime and Photo Booth, I stll get the feed from the internal camera.
iChat has a dropdown menu showing "Built-in iSight" and "iSight". But when "iSight" is selected, the message "Camera is off" appears.
What is the definitive method for using the built-in iSight and the firewire iSight simultaneously?  Thank you.

Hi,
Several answer to the implied questions.
By Default iChat will choose the camera listed in the iChat menu > Preferences > Video section > camera drop down.
(If there is only one camera this drop down does not appear)
The External iSight may need it's iris opened if it is plugged in but you are being told it is Off.
However also you may benefit from ticking the check box about an External Camera at the bottom of the same pane.
As for "Simultaneously" http://b-l-a-c-k-o-p.com/CamCamX.html
Other VJ type apps or that will do VJ type stuff are listed here under Movie Capture.

Can I use built-in iSight camera with other apps?
    How?
doesn't work in imovie or image capture

    Hi Judson,
THe built in iSight will actually work with iMovie if you have the version of iMovie which comes with iLife 6. (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61929 for a mention)
There is a slightly clumsy "workaround" available for use with earlier versions of iMovie, but you need a dv cam to use it - see http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051217210335199
I gather that "EvoCam" - http://www.evological.com/evocam.html - will also work directly with the built in iSight.
So too, should recent versions of QuicktimePro.
As for other apps, tell us what you wish to do with it. We may be able to come up with some suggestions.
    Cheers

  • Using built in isight on other chat applications-HELP PLS!

Hi all, i have tried using my built in isight cam with various different chat applications e.g. Yahoo Messenger but when i try to use it on various other sites i get given a small user settings box with 5 tabs at the base of the box one of which is for the video side of things. i tick the necessary box to allow video but the green light next to the isight doesnt come on? there is a drop down list of 3 different types of cam but the isight isnt on this list?! so my question is how do i turn on the isight on these chat sites if at all? maybe because its a built in cam it wont work ? i just dont know but when i had my old windows laptop last year with an external cam then i had NO problems at all! is it an Apple thing?! HELP please as i'm a relative Mac newbie and am still discovering how on earth you operate this machine!
    cheers all, Jason C.

Thats a Flash player window, have you got the latest Flash player http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/4783/adobe-flash-player

  • How to use built-in webcam for Skype?

How does one use the built-in webcam online? My iMac's webcam can be accessed through Photo Booth, but only, it appears, to take photos or brief movies. I've searched this forum, but don't find how one can use the webcam online such as in Skype. A program called iSight is mentioned in several posts, but my year-old iMac doesn't have that program. Any clues on how to use the camera beyond Photo Booth? Many thanks.

    HI Bob,
You can use Skype with your iMac and iSight.
    Go here, download Skype
The Skype application will be installed to your Applications folder. Launch Skype. You will need to create a username and password. Once you have logged into Skype from the Menu Bar at the top of your screen click Skype/Preferences and selec the Video tab. Click the pop up menu where you see: Camera and select: Built-in iSight

  • Using built-in iSight

I know how to chat/video-conference, but what if I simply want to record a short video using the built-in iSight camera.
    How to?

If you change the small slider from editing to camera/import mode you should be able to select your iSight camera from the dropdown list by clicking down on/next to the camera icon.

  • Presenter 8  fails using built-in iSight on Bootcamp

Presenter 8 won't work with my Apple built-in iSight camera in Win7 in bootcamp
I have 3 different generations of imac and 1 macbook pro that have the same problem.
Presenter tries to start the camera, the indicator turns on, then after about 20 seconds, it errors out saying the camera is turned off.
If I remove Presenter 8 and re-install 7, it works. If I connect an external USB camera, it works.
I'm caught in the middle on this, as is always the case when I find something weird in my labs.
Neither Apple, or Microsoft, or Adobe seem to care about this because it's a poor configuration. And it is too easy to blame the "Other Guy"!
Please don't tell me I should have bought a windows machine, It wasn't my decision, only my responsibility to maintain.

      Hi,
I've been working on computers for over 30 years and it always amazes me how troubleshooting hints are stumbled upon.
Your questions prompted me to check the settings in video creator again. I hadn't previously looked at the resolution settings.
The iSight cameras that were giving me problems are not HD. Changing the setting to SD resolved the issue.
    Thanks much for the hint.

  • Can I use my Pismo's external Firewire as backup for my iBook?

    Hi,
How can I use my Pismo's Seagate 300Gig external Firewire HD to back up my iBook without destroying all of my Pismo data? My Pismo's internal HD is only 10Gig and my iBook's internal HD is 20Gig.
My external has 2 partitions (10 Gigs of which are a cloned mirror of my Pismo's 10Gig HD and the rest are allocated for disc images of all my lectures). Can it be done without destroying all the data backed up and stored/filed on the external?
A Little Fish in the BigMac Pond

    Little Fish,
Just out of curiosity, one of my three partitions on my HD has OS 9.2.2 plus applications, etc. I started up Carbon Copy Cloner on my 10.4.7 partition and cloned my 10.4.7 over to the 9.2.2 partition. None of the existing files was disturbed on the 9.2.2 partition plus the root level (that's what you see when clicking open the HD icon) of the partition was organized just as if both 9.x and 10.x had always been there.
However, this was a one-time CCC. If you are concerned about not disturbing the disk images already on the large partition and you still want to backup the iBook, you might instead use CCC's option to Create a Disk Image on Target. To restore, you would boot to the other partition, mount the disk image file and restore to the target. I have NOT tried this approach so I have no comment on it.
I would say this...if your stored image files are very important, you must take all precautions and avoid risking the integrity of that partition. I would thus not be copying over a working OSX; a disk image is probably safer but if that partition with your disk images is corrupted, do you have another backup? I may be overly cautious but I just want to make sure you know the potential pitfalls.

  • Using built-in iSight w/iMovie on the Intel iMac? Help!

I just got a new intel iMac- and the instructions for using the built-in iSight camera to record video into iMovie 6 are really difficult to find- and most seem to refer to either earlier versions-
Can anyone give me a quick walk through, or point me in the direction of instructions for the built-in iMac and iMovie 6? I'm having a heck of a time figuring it out.
    Thanks.
    I looked at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61929
& other applications aren't on, etc.-

Welcome, Sheila. For what I know about built-in iSight, see Built-in iSight ( Late 2005 -> ). There should be little problem using your internal iSight to record into iMovie 6 if you have the slider under the edit window set at the "camera" (import) icon rather than the "scissors" (edit) icon.
Your questions are more likely related to using iMovie. If the above link and iMovie > Help on your Mac do not get you going, try Apple's Mac 101, Lesson 13: iMovie HD tutorial. That should get you going.
If you need more help with iMovie 6, try searching or posting in the iMovie HD 6 Discussions area.

I am able to access the Prod1 directory from Prod2 machine and also i have created Network map drive as Z drive pointing to that prod1 D:\OrsDWtest_dir directory. Also i checked read and Write permissions are there . I am able to create the external table but when i try to fetch the data i m getting below error ..

  • Using built-in iSight with Boot Camp and Yahoo Messenger

Has anyone had a problem using Yahoo Messenger video conferencing by using the iSight?? It shows up as a USB device in the windows hardware but Yahoo says it isn't available. I can use the camera with other programs though. The camera works perfectly on the MAC side (of course). I can't figure out why I can use it for other programs but not Yahoo messenger. Any ideas.
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple discussions, DualOSuser
I no longer use YM in any OS, so I have no problems with it.
If your only problem is with Yahoo video, have you checked a Yahoo Help search like this one? Yahoo should be able to give you the best help either to tell you how to make their software work with your system or to tell you the limitations of their software.
You could also check Windows Help in case the problem might be with Windows.
If you think the problem might be with Boot Camp, try searching Boot Camp Discussions.
If you get no help via any of those alternatives, when you post back here for other ideas, tell us which Windows and YM versions you are using. Some Windows user may be able to offer suggestions based on your additional details.
    Cheers,
    EZ Jim

  • How to use the  ipod as external hard drive???

I went to the windows explorer page and checked under my computer and saw my ipod as the "E" drive. Is the procedure of storing files, be it word or excel or photos as simple as dragging them into the ipod E drive location???
I have tried doing this and they seem to have been copied into the ipod, however when I checked into the ipod they were not there...anywhere. I highlighted the "ipod(E)" drive and created a new folder named "my documents" and then dragged some word files into it. I then detached the ipod from my computer and checked the ipod for the files and the new folder "my documents" and could not find them.
When you use the ipod as an external hard drive are all the documents and files you drag into it hidden???
Is there any way to view word documents?? How do you store them?
When using the ipod, is the only viewable information that comes up onto the ipod screen, info from the "itunes" page??
    cheers
    ipod 4th generation....20g Windows XP
    Windows XP

You can't view any of the files on the iPod while using the iPod. You can only see them through the computer. I guess if you want, you can put the files into the "Notes" folder on the iPod and see them using your iPod, but you can only open .txt files up to 4kb big.
