How to use ELMO motion control device with LABVIEW

Hi,
I am
new to LabVIEW withvery little controls
experience (just now graduated).  I need to use LabVIEW, NI USB 6009( DAQ)
and a Harmonica servo drive from Elmo to control a voice coil.  . What I
am looking for is some general guidance to get me started; point me in
the correct direction so I can get rolling.  I will be using a RS-232
line between the Harmonica and the PC.
I have generated a sine waveform to the NI USB 6009 from LABVIEW. I have to send this signal through the ELMO Harmonica 5/60 N to control a voice coil. I have
been reading the Elmo SimpleIQ Software Manual and am  lost Kindly help me out.
Regards,
Pawan
The software manual states using Interpreter Language or User
Programming Language.  Both of the languages seem to resemble what I
remember of C++, sort of.  The document explains "while" and "for"
loops, etc.; however, my understanding is that I should be able to use
LabVIEW to accomplish such tasks and then just ask LabVIEW to output a
command to the Bassoon to control my voice coil.  My best guess is that
I use the "System Commands" to output commands to the Bassoon although
the software manual also mentions compiling code similar to that of
standard programming modes.
Please help me out.
Thanks

  • Has any one used elmo motion control products

    Hi
I am using a elmo motion control servo node. This has a rs232 interface. I want to know whether it is possible to use this node with lanview.

We have used elmo drives for brushed servo motors several times in th past without problems. What is the model of the drive you have?

  • How to use Extech Instruments model 407123 with Labview 7.1

I am pretty new to Labview.  With the help of this forum I was able to configure my DAQpad 6020E with my Labview 7.1.
Now I am looking at using an Extech Instruments Hot Wire Thermo-Anemometer (407123) in my experiment and running it through Labview.  Based on my research, I was led to believe that I should use the Instrument Assistant I/O and NI-Visa, but I am having a lot of difficulties.  First off, the Thermo-anemometer is wired for RS232 and I have it connected to an RS232 to USB converter, which is then plugged into my computer.  I have the driver for the converter.  When I plug the thermo-anemometer into my computer, MAX reads it as a serial port and it is listed as COM3.  MAX claims that the device is working properly.  However, when I run Labview's Instrument Assistant I/O, and tell it to read data I get a bff0015 error and it says that the device timed out.  I have tried changing the time and I still get the same error.  I am assuming this means that Labview and my device are not communicating.
I have seen some mention of instrumentation drivers, but I haven't been able to find any for my particular device.  I am assuming that is the root of my problem, and that if I had an instrument driver to run my device in Labview that it would work properly.  So here are my questions.
    1)  What do I need to take data from a third party thermo-anemometer in Labview?
    2)  Am I correct in thinking I need some sort of instrument driver?  And if so, where could I find one (I have already searched for one and did not find it)?
    3)  Is it possible and practical to take data through Labview from a DAQpad and a third party instrument at the same time?
    4)  Are there any guides or tutorials I could use that may show me how to accomplish what I'm trying to do?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I've been trying numerous things to get this to work, and I've had little luck in getting exactly what I want.  I have been able to get data from some example VI's designed for serial read, and I was able to tweak them some, but this data seems to be only able to be saved to a .txt file.  I want the data from my anemometer to be read along with the time it was read and stored in a spreadsheet.
Instrument I/O Assistant appears to have exactly what I need to do this, but I can't get it to work.  I keep getting the bff0015 error, which is that the device timed out before the operation completed.  I don't understand why it is doing this, or how to stop it, because I am able to get data from the device otherwise.  In fact, following these steps I can see the exact data I want:
    1.  Open Instrument I/O Assistant
    2.  On "Select Instrument" I select the correct port and then click "properties"
    3.  At the top corner of the window I click "Open VISA Session"
    4.  Once there, I go to the "Basic I/O" tab.  Within that tab I click the "Read" tab.
Please see attached screenshots if you want to see what I'm talking about below.
At this point I can read the data from my device.  The default count value is 1024 bits.  If I click "execute" the device is read and I can read the data in the textbox that says "buffer."  However, my device only makes one 16-bit reading every 1.6 seconds, so I have to let the device sit for some time before it can fill the buffer up with 1024 bits.  If I don't, the reading takes place, I can see all of my data in the buffer, but the "Return Count" value on the screen is something significantly less than the "Count" value.  This makes sense because the buffer did not have time to fill.  Needless to say, the "Return Value" says "bff0015" which means it would return the time-out error.
If I wait for the full time for the buffer to fill, OR if I change the "count" value to something significantly lower, say... 32 bits, the buffer "fills" much faster, the "return count" count is correct, and the "return value" reads "3FFF0006" which I assume is a standard code meaning everything went correctly.  I also notice that if I wait long enough, the buffer will continue to fill, and I can click "Execute" many times rapidly and get readings instantly.  I can tell that the program is just reading data stored in the buffer when it doesn't take a second to perform the reading, and if I continue to click "Execute" rapidly, I will eventually expend the data stored in the buffer and I will start to see the "fresh" readings again.
So here is my question.  How do I lower the expected "count" value in the actual "Instrument I/O Assistant"?  I can do it in the "Open VISA session" under properties, but the only thing I can change in the Instrument I/O Assistant is the timeout value, but even when I set the value to 5 minutes, I still get the time out error.  What else can I do?

  • Need an Instrument Drive for Elmo motion control products.

    Hello,
I am going to use a Bassoon servo drive from Elmo Motion Control to control a voice coil.  I  haven't found an Instrument Driver for Elmo through my LavVIEW program or on their website.  Does an Instrument Drive for Elmo products exist?
    Thank You!

    Hello JMJ,
Here are my answers to your questions:
    1.  Is it possible for me to communicate with the Basic Serial Read
and Write example and not develop an Instrument Drive?  I see that the
write VISA VI takes a string and converts it and sends it to the
control card and the read VI receives a signal and converts it.  Is the
conversion converting from the Elmo language to the ASCII code?  If I
don't write an Instrument Drive will I have limited capabilities? You could use the serial example to write your entire program.  If you only need a handfull of commands, then this is probably the most straighforward for you to get going.  Everytime you use the VISA Write, the ascii values are written on the serial lines and transmitted to your device.  Your device reads and interprets these commands and acts depending on what the command is.  Some command may change a setting in the instrument.  Some other command may actually ask for the instrument to write back some data.  In this case, you need to have a VISA Read after the write to be able to read the data into your computer.
    2.  I was informed that there is an Instrument I/O Wizard that would
potentially be easier to use and program than an Instrument
Drive.  What is your opinion on such matter?  Could I use either or
neither? You can definitely use the Instrument I/O Wizard to help you .  This wizard really helps in parsing the data  received from your instrument.  You can look this tutorial if you want to learn more about  it.   You could use either one.  I suggest you try both these methods and see which one seems more obvious to you.
    3.  If I develope an Instrument Drive are all the seperate commands seperate subVIs?
A LabVIEW instrument driver usually has a set of VIs with specific functionality.  For example, you will have one subVI that will initializes the instrument.  This subVI may send 1 to 5 (or more) commands, depending on what you need to initialize your instrument.  You can then have one VI that set's an attritube.  This one would only require sending one command.   You can look at this tutorial for developping a complete instrument driver.  However, keep in mind that this may not me necessary for your application.
I suggest you first look at what functionality you need.  Then take a look at what commands this will require.  You will then be able to plan out your program a little better.  I also suggest you post all this information on the forum, so that we may be able to help you with more specific details.
    Have a great day.

  • How to use Source Code Control for Large Application?

    Hi, All!
I would like to collect knowledge about "best practice" examples for using Source Code Control and project organization for relative large application (let's say approx 1000 SubVIs).
    Tools used:
    LabVIEW 8.0
    CVS Server
    PushOK CVS Proxy Client
    WinCVS
With LabVIEW 8 we can organize large project pretty well. This described in article Managing Large Applications with the LabVIEW Project.
I have read this article too: Using Source Control Software with LabVIEW In this Article Source Safe used, but with PushOK all looks nearby the same and works (some tricks for compare function are required).
Example. Two developers working together on same project. Internally project is modular, so one developer will work with module "Analysis", and another one with "Configuration" without interferences. These modules placed into Subfolders as shown in example above.
    Scenario 1:
Developer A started with modification of module "Analysis". Some files checked out. He would like to add some SubVIs here. So, he must also perform check out for the project file (*.lvproj), otherwise he cannot add anything into project structure.
Developer B at the same time would like to add some new functions into module "Configuration". He also needed to check out project file, but this file already checked out by Developer A (and locked). So, he must wait until lvproj file will be checked in. Another way is mark *.lvproj files as text files in PushOK, but then one of developers will get conflict message by checking in and then merging will be necessary. This situation will coming very often, because in most cases *.lvproj file will be checked out all the time.
Question: Which practice is better for such situation? Is Libraries better than folder for large project?
    Scenario 2:
Developer C joined to the team. First, he must get complete project code for starting (or may be at least code of one Library, which assigned to him).
Question: How it can be done within LabVIEW IDE? Or WinCVS (or other SCC UI) should be used for initial checkout?
    Scenario 3:
Developer D is responcible for Build. Developers A,B,C have added lot of files into modules "Analysis", Configuration" and "FileIO". For building he need to get complete code. If our project splitted into folders, he should get latest *.lvproj first, then newly added SubVIs will appear in Project Explorer, then he should expand tree, select all SubVIs and get latest versions for all. If Project organized in Libraries, he must do the same for each library, isn't?.
Question: Is this "normal way", or WinCVS should be used for this way? In WinCVS its possible with two mouseclicks, but I prefer to get all code from CVS within LabVIEW IDE recursively...
That was a long post... So, if you already working with LabVIEW 8 with SCC used for large project, please post your knowledge here about project structure (Folders or Libraries) and best practices, its may be helpful and useful for all of us. Any examples/use cases/links etc are appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Andrey

    Regarding your scenarios:
    1. Using your example, let's say both developers checked out version 3
of the project file. Assuming that there are only files under the
directories in the example project, when Developer A checks in his
version of the project, there will be new files in one section of the
project separate from where Developer B is working. Developer B,
notices that there is now a version 4 of the project. He needs to
resolve the changes so will need to merge his changes to the latest
version of project file. Since the project file is a text file, that is
easy to do. Where an issue arrises is that after Developer B checks in
his merged changes, there is a revision 5. When Developer A and B go to
make another change, they get the latest version which will have the
merged changes to the project file but not the referenced files from
both Developer A and B. So when A opens version 5, he sees that he is
missing the files that B checked in and visa versa. Here is where the
developers will needs to manually use the source control client and,
external to LabVIEW, get those new files.
Where libraries help with the above scenario is that the library is a
separate file from the project so changes made to it outside of the
project do not require the project to be modified. So this time, the
developers are using a single project again which time time references
two libraries. The developers check out the libraries, make changes to
the libraries, and then check those changes in. So when each developer
opens the project file, since it references the project file, the
changes to the library will be reflected. There is still the issue of
the new files not automatically coming down when the latest version of
the library is obtained. Again, the developers will needs to manually
use the source control client and, external to LabVIEW, get those new
files. In general, you should take advantage of the the modularity that
    libraries provide.
    2. As noted in the above scenario, there is no intrinsic mechanism to
get all files referenced by a LabVIEW project. Files that are missing
will be noted. The developer will then have to use the source control
provider's IDE to get the initial contents of the project  (or library).
    3. See above scenarios.

  • [Forum FAQ] How to use parameter to control the Expand/Collapse drill-down options in SSRS report?

In SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), drill-down is an action we can apply to any report item to hide and show other report items. They all are ways that we can organize and display data to help our users understand our report better. In this article,
we are talking about how to use parameter to control the Expand/Collapse drill-down options in SSRS report.
Consider that the report has a dataset (dsSales) with following fields: SalesTerritoryGroup, SalesTerritoryCountry, CalendarYear, SalesAmount.
    1. The report has the following group settings:
    Parent Group: SalesTerritoryGroup
     Child Group: SalesTerritoryCountry
      Child Group: CalendarYear
       Details: SalesAmount
    2. Add three parameters in the report:
    GroupExpand:
    Available Values: “Specify values”
    Label: Yes           Value: Yes
    Label: No            Value: No
    Default Values: “Specify values”
    Value: Yes
    CountryExpand:
    Available Values: “Specify values”
    Label: Yes           Value: =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="No",Nothing,"Yes")
    Label: No            Value: No
    Default Values: “Specify values”
    Value: =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="No","No","Yes")
    YearExpand:
    Available Values: “Specify values”
    Label: Yes
    Value: =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="No" or Parameters!CountryExpand.Value="No",Nothing,"Yes")
    Label: No            Value: No
    Default Values: “Specify values”
    Value: =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="No" or Parameters!CountryExpand.Value="No","No","Yes")
    3. Right click SalesTerritoryCountry icon in the Row Groups dialog box, select Group Properties.
    4. Click Visibility in the left pane. Select “Show or hide based on an expression” and type with following expression:
    =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="Yes", False, True)
Select “Display can be toggled by this report item” option, and select “SalesTerritoryGroup” in the drop down list.
    5. Use the same method setting CalendarYear, (Details) drill-down with following expression:
    =IIF(Parameters!CountryExpand.Value="Yes", False, True)
    =IIF(Parameters!YearExpand.Value="Yes", False, True)
    6. Click SalesTerritoryGroup text box in the tablix. Select InitialToggleState property in the Properties dialog box, and type following expression:
    =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="Yes", True, False)
    7. Use the same method setting SalesTerritoryCountry, CalendarYear text box with following expression:
    =IIF(Parameters!CountryExpand.Value="Yes", True, False)
    =IIF(Parameters!YearExpand.Value="Yes", True, False)
After that, when we preview the report, we can use these three parameters to expand/collapse drill-down.

    Hi,
I'm not too familiar with tcom interfacing with LabVIEW, but you may want to check out other DFs, such as this one here.  Would it be possible to printscreen the LabVIEW error you are talking about- "high freq not found...".  Furthermore, you may want to confirm the functionality of the script with the person who made it.
    I hope this helps,

  • How to use the custom control ?

    Hi Friends,
plz help to use of  custom control in screen painter ?
and how to use the custom control ?
    Thanking you.
    Regards,
    Subash.

    HI,
    Screen Elements
A screen can contain a wide variety of elements, either for displaying field contents, or for allowing the user to interact with the program (for example, filling out input fields or choosing pushbutton functions). You use the Screen Painter to arrange elements on the screen.
You can use the following elements:
    ·        Text fields
Display elements, which cannot be changed either by the user or by the ABAP program.
    ·        Input/output fields and templates
Used to display data from the ABAP program or for entering data on the screen. Linked to screen fields.
    ·        Dropdown list boxes
Special input/output fields that allow users to choose one entry from a fixed list of possible entries.
    ·        Checkbox elements
Special input/output fields that the user can either select (value ‘X’) or deselect (value SPACE). Checkbox elements can be linked with function codes.
    ·        Radio button elements
Special input/output fields that are combined into groups. Within a radio button group, only a single button can be selected at any one time. When the user selects one button, all of the others are automatically deselected. Radio button elements can be linked with function codes.
    ·        Pushbuttons
Elements on the screen that trigger the PAI event of the screen flow logic when chosen by the user. There is a function code attached to each pushbutton, which is passed to the ABAP program when it is chosen.
    ·        Frame
Pure display elements that group together elements on the screen, such as radio button groups.
    ·        Subscreens
Area on the screen in which you can place another screen.
    ·        Table controls
    Tabular input/output fields.
    ·        Tabstrip controls
Areas on the screen in which you can switch between various pages.
    ·        Custom Controls
Areas on the screen in which you can display controls. Controls are software components of the presentation server.
    ·        Status icons
Display elements, indicating the status of the application program.
    ·        OK field
Every screen has a twenty-character OK_CODE field (also known as the function code field) that is not displayed directly on the screen. User actions that trigger the PAI event also place the corresponding function code into this field, from where it is passed to the ABAP program. You can also use the command field in the standard toolbar to enter the OK field. To be able to use the OK field, you need to assign a name to it.
All screen elements have a set of attributes, some of which are set automatically, others of which have to be specified in the Screen Painter. They determine things such as the layout of the screen elements on the screen. You can set the attributes of screen elements in the Screen Painter - either for a single element, or using the element list, which lists all of the elements belonging to the current screen. Some of the attributes that you set statically in the Screen Painter can be overwritten dynamically in the ABAP program.

  • Where can I find an adapter that will let me use my firewire 800 devices with a thunderbolt only ported macbook air?

Been looking for a way to use my firewire 800 devices with my macbook air - which has only usb and thunderbolt ports.  I've seen internet pages for an adapter from sonnet but have not found anywhere to actually purchase such a thing.  Would love to be able to at least try to use the thunderbolt port - for something - or trade the thing in for something with present day usable firewire 800 ports.  Is this thunderbolt technology already getting shelved?  I see like 5 items on the market that actually use this port...  really?  That's it?   Thank you for any guidance!

Sonnet has an TB-capable expresscard adapter.

  • How to use the same OC4j server with different port number

How to use the same OC4j server with different port numbers..?
I have to OC4J installed on my machine on different hard disk drives....
I want to be able to run both the server simultaneously..?
is it possible ..it yes then how..?
for that i have changed the port number of one server...
but when i am trying to start the other server with different port number..it says that JVM -Bind already...
    Is there any clues...?

    In the config directory:
default-web-site.xml: Change the port the HTTP listener listens on
jms.xml: Change the port the JMS service listens on
rmi.xml: Change the port the ORMI listener listens on.
Or, you can add another web-site.xml file, and deploy your applications to 1 server, and bind the web applications to the different web sites. This way you only have to deploy your applications to 1 place.

  • How to use "Notes" on my iPad with my existing iCloud address?

How to use "Notes" on my iPad with my existing iCloud address? It asks me to create a new one...

Did I overlook some critical info here? I'm having the same problem described by Henry5, but I'm signed in to iCloud with my AppleID which is not the same as my Mobile Me/iCloud email. I keep being asked to create an account (which it won't allow me to do since the account already exists) but no where do I see an option to use the existing account. I also tried logging out with my AppleID account, and using the iCloud email, but that doesn't work.
I just want to sync my notes and mail... this is really irritating!
