How to view airport network wep password?

I can't find where i wrote down my network passwod, and I am trying to view my airport network WEP password in System Preferences.  However, the check box to "show password" is grayed out and won't let me view it.
How can I view the password?
thanks - sam

I am using the imac that has the built in airport.  However, I don't use the actual airport often as the imac is also connected with direct ethernet.  But I did set it up at one point to use the airport with my home wireless router.
I do not know if I checked option to have Keychain access remember the password?  but maybe I did since when I do activate the airport, it just automatically works with the wireless router.
And I do know the admin password.
essentially, I am trying to find out the password on my mac so I can get my laptop onto the wireless network.  And I thought I would be able to check the box to view password, but it's grayed out.
thanks for any help.

If you are the Administrator of PC you could always get information from router or via Windows itself, but you are not going to be able to access passwords of all previously visited "hotspots".

  • How to view AirPort / Time Capsule logs

I want to be able to view logs of all connections made using my AirPort or Time Capsule.  I know how to use the AirPort Utility to view a list of who is currently connected to the WIFI network, but that is a snapshot in time.  I want to be able to look over a log of connections (successful and failed) over the past days/weeks but haven't found a way to do this.  Can anyone help?

Sorry, but Apple dropped all logs in AirPort Utility 6.x versions starting about 2 years ago.
If you still have a Mac running the Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x) operating system, you can use AirPort Utility 5.x to view detailed information about each wireless connection.
An application for Mac like iNet might provide some useful basic information.

  • How do I change my WEP password?

    Hi Everyone,
I let my next door neighbor use my internet for 2 weeks while he waiting for his to be installed.
To do this I gave him my current password.
How do I change it to something else now? I would like to make sure he actually got his own net and is not using mine anymore.
I'm a little confused how to do this easily. There are system preferences and a few airport utility programs.
Can someone tell me the very simple answer.
Also... my password seems to be a long string of charachters but I think the password I gave him was something I made up myself... Im confused.
Thanks very much for any of your answers.

  • WEP password not accepted. Two separate Airport based offices.

I have an Airport network setup in two different locations/offices (Leeds and London).
It was all working fine and the WEP password worked and the iBooks and Mac Books all logged in automatically once setup. This worked fine for months from installation.
Now, for no apparent reason and no changes on the AirPort, the WEP password is not being accepted and the laptops cannot connect any more.
Has a software update done this? I can't think so as 3 of the laptops have not been updated for the last 3-4 months and the Airports started acting like mthis two weeks ago.

    Hi,
The Airport base Stations have not been updated since purchase. One is about 7 months old, the other about 2.5 months old.
Does this mean you think that the previous software / formware was faulty and this discconnection or loss of WEP password is simply a fault and a SW UpDate will fix it?
I've not tried your suggeestion of no encryption or WPA yet as I will not visit the sites again for 3-4 weeks, but surely any setting available should be stable?
    Thank you.

  • Airport express does not see password protected airport network

When I try and password protect my Airport network, my Airport Express, set to join an existing network to play music on my stereo, can no longer see the network. I have my Airport Express plugged in via ethernet to configure it, and the Admin Utility shows a pop up menu for available networks to join, but this menu only shows my Airport network when password protection for the network is turned off. I never set my network to be hidden, so that's not the problem, and my laptop(s) can always see the Airprort network, regardless of password protection being enabled or not.
Supposedly you can select a password protected network for the Express to join and then it will prompt you to enter the password, but if it is not in the list then I can't select it. I can type in the network name, but again, it only joins if I turn off password protection for the network.
Is there a work around for this?
    -Lewis

Your express will need to see the SSID in order to connect. I would suggest that you temporarily turn off the security (WPA2) on your D-Link router, make sure it is broadcasting the SSID, and then see if the express detects it. If the express doesn't see it, make sure some other device can.
You also might try changing the SSID, or turning it off and back on and see if that helps.
Once you can see it in the clear, add the security, and be sure to enter it in exactly, be careful of capitals, etc.

  • How do i personalize it and password protect it?

My internet works, I was trying to set up my new airport extreme and my computer froze in the process and now it works but the light blinks amber and its an open network connection that anyone can connect to.  I tried a factory reset, but it won't go back to the easy setup process like the first time.  It just opens and my computer connects.  Any thoughts for how to rename the network and password protect it?

To rename the Network Name: AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Network Name
To enable wireless security: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBS > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Security. I would recommend using "WPA2 Personal" for the security type.

  • Airport express not allowing PC or xbox on to network with WEP password

    Hi there
Ever since we switched from PC to Mac about 5 years ago our airport express (purchased 2007) has not allowed a PC or other gaming device on to it's network. I have two MacBooks at the moment which needed to be configured with slightly different IPv4 addresses in order to be on the network. That was about a year ago when we bought a new MB and I thought it strange when both computers would not connect and it was a bit of a drama lugging both computers to the store in order for the techs to manually fix the issue.
Now we have an international student living with us and it is very important that he is able to connect with his PC to our network. My son's DS and xbox is never allowed to connect to our network using the WEP password that we use for our Macs. It is a very frustrating situation now as I do not think that the Mac store can help us out since I asked for advice a while ago when trying to connect my son's gaming consoles and they said they could not help with non apple products. This is a little odd as I thought that Airport would connect all devices. Our internet provider cannot help us as it is NOT a modem issue.
I should also add that at least twice a day our Macbooks 'fall off' our network and we have to turn the airport off and on in order to reboot the connection. I also have an iphone and that connects to our network although occasionally it will ask me to rejoin and prompt me to enter the password which I do but it rejects it. I usually press cancel and for some reason it connects fine despite not accepting the password.
My question is this: Can I connect other devices to airport and if so, how? Or is our airport faulty and should I replace it? I really don't want to buy a new device if the same problem is still going to occur.
Thanks in advance for the help.

    I'd love some feedback....anyone?

How do you set up a password for a wireless network when using an Airport Extreme wireless router?

    Thanks for the updated information.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Check to make sure that the setting for Wireless Security reads either WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal
Enter a Wireless Password and Verify Password
Click Update to save any changes and wait a full minute for the AirPort Etreme to restart

If you have the Mac that you used to configure the AirPort Extreme originally, you may be able to retrieve the password from KeyChain Access.

  • How to view my WEP Key ?

I need to connect to my Airport Extreme Wireless Network from a WIndow XP configured Macbook.
WIndows requires the Hexadecimal WEP key to connect.
    How do i get this?
To be sure, i have read many similar questions on this forum and tried :
    - The network preference panel. The "show password" tick option remains grayed out.
    - The Airport utility. The "equivalent network password" on the Base Station meny remains grayed out.
    - The Keychain access utility. I can only find the alphabetic passord, not the hexadecimal WEP key (of course tried to enter the alphabetic one, but did not work, so i assume it is expecting the hexadecimal one....).
    - In one of the posts, the contributor is bemoaning about an upgrade on snow leopard that makes getting to view the WEP key absurdly complicated. He provides a link :
    http://www.adamriggins.com/2009/11/16/how-to-view-saved-wifi-passwords-in-osx-sn ow-leopard/
... which unfortunately is not working anymore...
I do clearly remember easily retrieving the WEP key 2 or 3 years ago, maybe from OS leopard at the time. I don't quite understand why it's been made so difficult now. Was there a security issue ? then is there an Apple note summarizing those facts and recommanding steps for previously set networks ?
Anyone who can help on this is very welcome.
    Thanks in advance

well first of all why are you using wep? don't you realize that all wep networks can be cracked in 15 minutes?
older versions of windows xp do not know WPA/WPA2 if you are running the latest service pack then it should support WPA or WPA2
if for the life of you cannot determine the WEP password no matter how hard you try. i found mine by going into keychain and clicked on show password and there was my wifi password
then you might as well just download the latest version of airport utility, write down all the important settings, and then use the reset button to erase everything and then reconfigure it from scratch. and then you will know your password.
while you are there, if you can turn on wpa, by all means turn it on

  • Access WEP password protected Airport Express WiFi w/T-Mobile B'Berry Curve

I have a new T-Mobile provided Blackberry Curve and the cellular signal is particularly weak in my home. T-Mobile tells me that the new Curve allows me to connect to my home WiFi network and make phone calls using WiFi (given my traditional cell signal is weak at home). Apparently, this is reasonably new functionality as I had not previously been aware of it. The problem I am having is that my WiFi network is protected by a WEP password that I set. I know the password and can view it on my Mac when I go into my Network settings and prompt it to "show password". The problem I'm having is that when I tell the Blackberry device to "search for networks" it quickly searches and easily finds my WiFi network; however, when it prompts me to then enter the WEP password, I do so and then the Blackberry gives me a prompt with something about how the password should be 8 or 24 hexadecimal characters (or something like that?) and then it will not connnect to the WiFi network. Almost as though it's not recognizing the password? MY QUESTION--Am I putting the wrong password into the Blackberry device once it searches and finds my WiFi network? Is there a different password required (perhaps something specific to my Airport Express router that I may have forgotten and need to locate via another means)? Is the password I set through my MAC OS to access my WiFi network using a laptop, etc. not the same one you use for a device like the Blackberry Curve to access that same WiFi network? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as my cellphone is currently essentially worthless inside my home!

You are probably using the correct password. If you are using a shorter password than what is allowed you can suffer the problems of incompatible implementations of WEP. If you are using WEP you should be using 128 bit WEP. That is stronger than 64 bit WEP but not very strong. The maximum length password for 128 bit WEP is 13 ASCII (normal human) characters (which is 26 hexadecimal characters). If your WEP password is not that long, you should change the WEP password at the AirPort Express (AX) so that it is that long.
