How to view semantic css based layouts in design view in dreamweaver?

Hi all,
I havent had a lot to do with CSS based layouts (tables have alwasy just worked for me fine) but I am wondering how do I view the semantic/css based layout in design view in Dreamweaver?
As when I write the code, in design view its not showing me what the page will look like, I have to click on "Live View" to see what the page actually looks like.
I guess I am asking is there a way to using WYSIWYG on css layouts in design view??? Just like I do table layouts (In design view I can grab the edge of the table and resize etc)?
Any help would be great

Lou yeah I don't think the term WYSIWYG really applys to dreamweaver anymore when building CSS layouts.
The term "WYSIWYG" never applied to DW.  It was never such a thing, nor was any other HTML authoring, no matter what the marketing hype said.  It's not possible to deliver wysiwyg layouts when there are so many different browsers/platforms/versions to worry about.  This is particularly true when you go back to the era when WYSIWYG was actively used (but not with DW, which was not advertised in such a way) - Netscape 4, and IE5/Mac would alone be enough to destroy any layout....
The view you are getting in Design view is happening because your CSS is misplaced BELOW the <body> tag - it should be in the head of the page (i.e., above </head>). Your CSS should never be placed within the body of the page.

  • Creating template areas when using CSS based layout

    Hi:
    I'm ransitioning to pure CSS based layouts. When I used tables for layouts I could select a table cell and make that an editable template region. But when I'm setting everything up in Divs, you can't "select" a div in Layout mode. Indeed, layout mode doesn't really work at all - things are shown all jumbled and you have to use Preview or open in a browser window to see how things will look. (I'm not using the grid - maybe I should?) Is there a way to select a div and make it an editable template region?
    I'm using GoLive CS2 on a Mac.
    Thanks!

    Is this affecting ALL text on that page?

  • How to transform fixed table iWeb layouts to liquid CSS based layouts

    I'm in the process of changing my website over iWeb and would like to change the iweb fixed table layout to a liquid based layout.
    Here's the website I have now: http://teacherweb.com/CA/Newhart/CanKuhn and when changing to iweb I want the layout to change with the window size like it does with my website.
    Is this possible with iWeb?

  • CSS based layouts

    HTML DB's (even 2.0) layout features are based firmly on pure HTML tables. Rows and cells, rowspans/colspans. etc.
    Reading some of the bleeding edge web development sites/blogs out there, they have been proclaiming the death of HTML tables for page layout purposes for years now. CSS support is pretty well established in all major browsers, CSS standards have matured substantially over the past few years.
    What does the HTML DB development team think about adding native support for CSS-based page layouts?
    Thanks

    Hello,
    You can pretty much ,with some exceptions' create a fully XHTML/CSS based templates in HTML DB.
    The Builder will not be doing this for some time yet and some comments in your own post explains why.
    Reading some of the bleeding edge web development sites/blogs out there,I would suspect most people would want production quality not bleeding edge.
    You will notice we have removed pretty much removes all deprecated tags though.
    What follows next is a rant but it's only because I take my HTML 'VERY' seriously, been building pages since the bleeding edge browser was lynx , you have been warned.
    --BEGIN RANT
    CSS support is 'pretty well established' in all major browsers, CSS standards have
    matured substantially over the past few years.I can't even begin to count all the different ways pretty well established does not equal looks the same in all major browsers, if you don't believe me just ask google.
    I don't like pointing at any one browser in particular (all heads look towards Redmond , Washington) but one of these browsers doesn't stack up compared to the others. It is unfortunate that it has the huge install base it does.
    examples of things that just plain suck:
    style="display:inline-table;"
    png's with transparency
    background image under links blinking bug
    caching of backgroud images
    oh and the whole box model thing
    I'm a huge fan of xhtml/css layout's but the css hacks involved, the css issues between different browsers, unless it's a demonstration of how cool you can make things with only <div> tags and css it's not worth the time and effort to get it perfect.
    You need to email Mozilla Foundation and Microsoft and complain to them once they get it right.
    I 'personally' will make it right till then LONG LIVE TABLES!!!!?

    Thanks,
    Carl

  • How can I get back to editing in Design view?

    I can't edit my web pages in Design view. When I DON'T have Live View on, nor Live Code, I only get a cursor shaped like a NO circle and I cannot click on anything to edit it. I can only make changes in the code window.
    What can I do to restore editablilty in Design view?

    Sorry this has taken so long. I have been trying a few things. One is the fact my template my pages are all based on has an editable region, which is where the uneditable are is within.. Other editable areas in the template are available for me to click into and edit, but not the main area.
    I tried moving the main div inside the editable region, but then, although it is now editable, the main div gets wiped away when the site pages get updated. So then I am forced to go back to the previous situation.

    /* Tips for mainContent:
    1. The space between the mainContent and sidebar1 is created with the left margin on the mainContent div.  No matter how much content the sidebar1 div contains, the column space will remain. You can remove this left margin if you want the #mainContent div's text to fill the #sidebar1 space when the content in #sidebar1 ends.
    2. Be aware it is possible to cause float drop (the dropping of the non-floated mainContent area below the sidebar) if an element wider than it can contain is placed within the mainContent div. WIth a hybrid layout (percentage-based overall width with em-based sidebar), it may not be possible to calculate the exact width available. If the user's text size is larger than average, you will have a wider sidebar div and thus, less room in the mainContent div. You should be aware of this limitation - especially if the client is adding content with Contribute.
    3. In the Internet Explorer Conditional Comment below, the zoom property is used to give the mainContent "hasLayout." This may help avoid several IE-specific bugs.
    /* Miscellaneous classes for reuse */
    .fltrt { /* this class can be used to float an element right in your page. The floated element must precede the element it should be next to on the page. */
              float: right;
              margin-left: 8px;
    .fltlft { /* this class can be used to float an element left in your page */
              float: left;
              margin-right: 8px;
              azimuth:center-left
    .clearfloat { /* this class should be placed on a div or break element and should be the final element before the close of a container that should fully contain a float */
              clear:both;
        height:0;
        font-size: 1px;
        line-height: 0px;
    [if IE]>
    <style type="text/css">
    /* place css fixes for all versions of IE in this conditional comment */
    #navbar, #header, #mainContent, #container, navbuttonlineup, #centercore, #leftside, #rightside, #adspace, #mainblurb, #pictscolumn {zoom: 1;}
    #header {
              top:0px;
              position:absolute;
    /* the above proprietary zoom property gives IE the hasLayout it needs to avoid several bugs */
    </style>
    <![endif]
    If you have any solution, I would greatly appreciate it!

  • How come I can see my div in design view but not in live view

    Hi,
    I have a div ID called "portfolio" that I can see in design view but not live view or on a browser. It's a little pink square and I want that square round also.
    I ran it through validator. It picked up some things in the style.css which I changed and the boilerplate.css that I did not. Because I thought DW auto creates code for boilerplate because I don't enter that code myself.
    It's also rejecting a lot of webkit code but this seems like standard webkit code that works elsewhere on the page.
    BTW: at what point does this brutal hand coding pay off in money and less heartache when Wordpress looks cleaner and is so much easier to use? I feel like I barely know HTML or CSS in terms of translating vision to reality and with all-browser functionality after months and months of on-line classes. How long are the pros at it till they reach a watershed point?
    here's my address: http://www.adjacentdimensionsmedia.com/home.html
    Here's my html:
    <body>
      <div class="gridContainer clearfix">
        <div id="div1" class="fluid"><img src="adtitle2.png" width="700" height="80" alt=""/></div>
      <div class="fluid"><div class="box-shad"><a href="index.html"></a></div>
      </div>
        <div id="portfolio">Portfolio</div>
    </body>
    Here's my CSS:
    .box-shad {
      margin-top: 200px;
      margin-left: 100px;
      width: 900px;
      height: 700px;
      display: block;
      background-image: url("images/Big-tree-trans1.png");
      background-size: 900px 700px;
      -webkit-box-shadow: 15px 15px 15px #000000 inset;
      box-shadow: 15px 15px 15px #000000 inset;
      -webkit-border-radius: 50%;
      border-radius: 50%;
      position: fixed;
    .box-shad a {
        display:block;
        width:900px;
        height:700px;
    #portfolio {
      width: 100px;
      height: 100px;
      margin-top: 0px;
      margin-right: 200px;
      margin-left: 200px;
      margin-bottom: 0px;
      border-radius: 75%;
      -webkit-border-radius: 75% 75%;
      background: pink;
      top: -300px;
      position: relative;

    The top:-300 is putting that div above the top of the browser viewport. Fix that and you'll see the div.

  • Viewing CSS fomated pages in Design View DW MX 2004

    I am using DW MX 2004. I have imported a new clients site and

  • JDeveloper: Viewing a .css on JSP at design-time + run-time

    Hi,
    As a newbie to JDeveloper, i'm struggling to get a stylesheet reference to work in both the Design view and at run-time. Dragging a stylesheet on to the JSP works fine in the development enviroment, but when the JSP is called from a controlling servlet, the stylesheet doesn't render. From looking on the web it seems i have to use request.getContextPath() to get the path: doing this works at runtime, but in the design view of JDeveloper doesn't show anything (obviously wouldn't because the getContextPath is evaluated at runtime).
    Is there a work around so i can see a style sheet rendered in both design & runtime?
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply. When I added my stylesheet (from the component palette) JDev put it in a 'css' folder. When I drag it on to the page it uses ..href = "css/stylesheet.css".. This doesn't work at runtime, neither does href = "/css/stylesheet.css".
    To explain the problem better...if I create a new project with 2 jsp files and link them together with Go to page 1 etc this is fine. As soon as I use the mvc method of controlling jsps thorough servlets I can call page 1 fine, but if I linked back to page 2 with the href calling the jsp directly (rather than through a servlet) it won't find the page, because the context root has an extra 'servlet' folder on the path, ie it's looking for page 2 in "Testing-Project-context-root/servlet/page2.jsp", when it's not located in a servlet folder. This is why the css file is not rendering, because it's looking for it in a servlet folder. I can only get round it at the moment by using:
    <link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="<%=request.getContextPath()%>/css/stylesheet.css"/>. This of course is no good in the development environment.
    Thanks,
    Phil

  • How Do I Change the Font Size in Design View?

    The font size when coding in Dreamweaver's "Design View" is
    too small. How do I change the size in "Design View" to make it
    bigger? I've found that you can change the code view in Preferences
    but it has no way to change the font size in Design View.
    P.S.--I'm using DW8

    Hi,
    By "a meeting notice", do you mean the Outlook meeting reminder? It's not possible to change the font in Calendar reminders. It's a system font.

  • Preview and Generate view not displaying the same as design view

    RoboHelp HTML Ver 8.0.2.208.
    Hi all,
    I have a topic that will not generate or preview what is displayed in the design view.
    The topic is a table that uses a different image as the background for each cell (from the CSS).
    The background images display fine in design view but will not display when previewed or generated. Everything else is displayed but not the backgrounds.
    Any ideas.
    Thanks
    Wowronin

    You have this -
    </head>
    <script>
    <!--
    function msgopen(url, name, w, h)
    w += 32;
    h += 96;
    var win = window.open(url,
      name,
      'width=' + w + ', height=' + h + ', ' +
      'location=no, menubar=no, ' +
      'status=no, toolbar=no, scrollbars=yes, resizable=yes,screenX=2,screenY=2,left=100,top=100,');
    win.resizeTo(w, h);
    win.focus();
    // -->
    </script>
    <style type="text/css">
    #preloader  {
         position: absolute;
         top: 0;
         left: 0;
         right: 0;
         bottom: 0;
         background-color: #fefefe;
         z-index: 99;
        height: 100%;
    #status  {
         width: 200px;
         height: 200px;
         position: absolute;
         left: 50%;
         top: 50%;
         background-image: url(ajax-loader.gif);
         background-repeat: no-repeat;
         background-position: center;
         margin: -100px 0 0 -100px;
    </style>
    <body>
    In other words, you have a script block AND a CSS block between </head> and <body>. That's invalid code. Move it to where it belongs inside the <head> region.  You could have found this in an instant by checking the page here - http://validator.w3.org.

    It is quite easy to do simple things with CSS, but it's very
    powerful,
    and has a long learning curve. Keep at it, and you'll get
    there in the end.

    I'm not a big fan of ADDT (Adobe knows my opinions, because I
    have told
    them directly). I would like to see how ADDT develops before
    committing
    to writing about it. As for ColdFusion, I experimented with
    it a long
    time ago, but decided I preferred to improve my knowledge of
    PHP before
    branching out into other fields.

  • Applying css style in DW (design view) or CT

    Hi Folks,
    Here's a dumb question I can't figure out. In DW and CT, you
    can apply a css style to a paragraph selecting p tag, right? You
    get <p class="myclass"></p>
    What I don't get is why the css style apply to an image for
    exemple inside the paragraph and not to the paragraph itself?
    Of course as you developp a website you certainly don't worry
    about that since you handcode or you never apply a style to a
    paragraph.
    Let's say you need to define a css style saying:
    .myclass {
    margin: 0 0 20px 20px;
    float:right;
    so the paragraph containing an image align to right and have
    proper margin. Why by default the css style apply to the image and
    not to the paragraph? You end with this <p><img
    src="myimage.jpg" class="myclass" /></p>
    What's the logic behind this, this is very annoying, specialy
    for CT users.

    Try this: select the <p> tag, located along the bottom
    of the design
    window (it will highlited when selected) then from the style
    drop menu
    in the properties inspector select 'myclass'
    That should apply the class to only to the <p> tag?

  • Does anybody know how I would go about building a kit designer for a dreamweaver website project im working on please.

    Building a sporting website as part of a project im undertaking, want to build a kit designer but not sure where to start, and help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Its sort of a plugin you would build and add on to a page where people are able to select a a certain shirt for example, and then customise design colour etc, an example of this would be on Rugby Kit Designer | Akuma Sports.
