HR ANALYTICS MODELING
Hi
Anyone having experience with modeling for HRA mainly workforce management tables. Can anyone guide me through the process as this is quite new for me. We have data coming from various sources and want to model HRA Tables( 150 tables).
Can anyone explain what does that exactly mean?

We've just completed our first OBIEE and HR Analytics BI project. We sourced PeopleSoft data using the out-of-the-box BI apps. We also built three completely new metadata subject areas and related OLAP and ETL development to bring in data from other HR applications.
Much like you described... We planned to simply load entire sets of tables from PeopleSoft into OBI. Then build a set of dashboards & reports modeled after existing spreadsheets, then spend several weeks on System Testing & UAT. Release 1... Complete!
We did have the good sense to consult with an Oracle Certified implementation partner. It took us a couple of weeks, and several pointed conversations with our consultant for us to realize our thoughts on how this was going to work were possibly somewhat over simplistic.
Oracle has defined a great set of metrics and reports to support base HR information needs... "What's our Active Headcount?" "What's our current Employee Turnover Rate?" "What's our Time to Fill Open Positions?" All good stuff, but we really needed to start from the start... go back to our customers and figure out what information they lacked and what questions they needed to have answered for us to succeed in delivering a truly effective BI solution.
We made the assumption that going from an 'Oracle Source System' to an 'Oracle Target System' would be pretty straight forward, providing our users with a very quick win. What we found is that Oracle's logical layer and presentation design were not aligned with our user's business rules, KPIs, or metrics definitions. We didn't fully grasp the amount of work and complexity involved.
While Oracle obviously expended a lot of effort to develop this application suite, calling it an "out-of-the-box solution" is maybe an overstatement. Naive on our part? Perhaps... but the out-of-the-box BI apps actually took a lot of indepth analysis and a hefty dose of reverse-engineering just to figure out what transformations and mappings were at work in the background.
It was no small feat figuring out which PeopleSoft elements were actually making it across to the business model and how metrics were being calculated. Field names in the presentation catalog didn't match PeopleSoft, our business users were confused... and us, the IT division? We learned a lot about how to properly plan and manage a Business Intelligence program.

Integrating Analytics model with Data Services/Integrator
We are trying to integrate a regression model (analytics result) in PMML format into the data solution. We are using Data Services and our clients also have Data Services/Data Integrator.
What is the method to apply the analytics model over the complete data solution. We could be flagging or scoring data.

"My computer is not working!" and after hours you figured the solution: "Turn on your monitor"
The problem I was having was the inconsistant information or how I interpreted it:
Fact1: you see swapping and huge memory consumption
Fact2: The sum of virtual memory of all processes is less than the physical memory, at least does not account for swapping.
Fact3: Hence DI has to have a memory leak.
That didn't make sense to me. And I am still not sure I got your point about the core reason of it and where my understanding was wrong. Was the al_engine still living as a zombie process within Windows? Or did the SQL Server not release the session memory? I have no idea how to tell either one anyway....
In regards to row level locking in the SQL Server database I can possibly give you some background that might help: SQL Server does row level locking until it figures that to be inefficient because of the number of changes and does automatically switch to page level locking. If somebody else or even your own process but different session is touching any row inside that block, you get an error. This has caused us some troubles with DI, e.g. you have a Table Comparison in row-by-row mode. A few rows pass through the TC transform, the SQL Server is switching to page level locking and suddenly the TC cannot read a row anymore. The concept of an insert/update prohibiting a read (!!), a read of a row never touched even, is something we as Oracle DBAs would never dream of initially.

What is a Business Process Expert? and Business Analyst?
In response to Sinem Dorter's very interesting and informative blog about Composite Analytics at Whirpool, I'd like to ask how people would really define what is going on there.
Are modelers of composite applications business analysts? Business process experts? Application specialists? All of the above? None of the above?
What unique skills are required to distinguish, say, a business analyst from a business process expert?
And can a business process expert be a team of people: maybe an enterprise analyst, a business process expert and an IT application specialist?
I'm curious to read responses.

Org Modeler 3.0 - Adding Analytics
Hi,
To what extent can we add analytics using org modeler. For example: Could we add something like total salary for an org unit?
Or are we confined to just being able to change the selection criteria to object counts? I know that Nakisa provides one for Org unit Count, but i'm curious how much flexibility we have with the tool wizard provided.

You can configure the analytics that are available in the Scenarios.xml file. You can add as many as you like, although there is no where clause. For example, I have added some that sum up the total values of Job Evaluation per OrgUnit. You can "change" the analytic available in order to create new analytics.
If you want to use your own data you need to get the data defined in your scenario from your AppResources.xml. You may need to use linked data elements to get all the data from different data elements into one "master" data element used by the scenario. Alternatively you can just add your new data to one data table in the downloadSchema.xml. Once your fields are in your "master" data element(s) you can then map these in ImportFields.xml. You also need to define them in data element in the XML file for your scenario.

This falls under 'just want to figure out how to do it'. Its not critical for work. I want to try to see if its possible to do this with both analytic function and with a model clause. Just to see if its possible. It has been stumping me.
I got the idea to look at this from this article about bin fitting. I have been playing with the model clause and I think you would do something with the 'increment' clause, but I dont see a way to reset it to 1 at a certain point.

DAC Execution plan for financial analytics keeps running (OBIA 7.9.4)
Hi Gurus,
I have problem when tried to run full load on financial analytics execution plan. I used OBIA 7.9.4, Informatica 8.6.1 and DAC 10.1.3.4.1.patch.20100901.0520. This runs on Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 with 6 GB of memory. I set $$INITIAL_EXTRACT_DATE='01/01/2011' so it should pull data greater than $$INITIAL_EXTRACT_DATE, which I believed not more than 3 years data and should be not more than 2 days for loading this data. But execution plan keeps running and not yet completed even after more than 2 days. I have already checked for DAC execution plan log, But nothing I can found from the log.

After certain tasks I found Informatica workflow did not run. In my case after 190 of 403 tasks but sometime 183 of 403 tasks so it is intermittent.

Same with tns name
2)Name should be same in workflow manager,ODBC and DAC client.
in DAC I set same with SID -->connection test successful
3)Have you mentioned custom properties in informatica integration service

After applied above setting DAC Execution Plan for Financial Analytics still take long time. Anything I should try?

How can I use Server level variables in a business model based report
hi gems..
I have declared one server level variable in the BI Analytics repository.
Now I have made one business model based report.
In one column I want to use that server level varible.
I go to the formula tab of that column and then clicked on variable--> session --> put the name of the variable and click ok.
But when i viewed the report, it is not showing the dates, rather it is showing the date format I chosed i.e DD-MMM-YYYY.
please help..actually the previous problem got resolved...
Now when I am trying to apply a filter on a particular column using that server variable, then it is showing that the varible has no value definition.
I have clicked on the filter tab of that column-->add-->variables-->session variables-->then I put the name of the variable-->click OK.

I have made that server variable from manage-->variables-->(right click) create new initialisation block-->gave the name and wrote the query and aslo gave the connection pool name and test that and it worked fine.. -
How to send datas properly to Google Analytics (ANE-Google-Analytics)
Hello,
I meet a problem when I'm using the native extension created by Alessandro Bianco : ANE-Google-Analytics. I tested this code many times, in the context of AIR mobile application, but I tested it without any success to add new datas to Google Analytic history. I'm really connected to internet properly.
Moreover I think that I've made my functions as required by the author : Can you look at my code below to detect some errors to communicate with Google Analytics ?

I'm not sure exactly what your issue is, but I was unable to connect and looked at your code, modifying it for my purposes and it fixed my code. Hopefully it can help fix yours.
I did notice one thing as I went through, however:
You use

The compteur does not match the counter variable. It appears a problem with Franglais is the issue here.

OBIEE 11.1.1.5 & BI Applicartions 7.9.6.3; Sales Analytics
I have installed OBIEE and Bi APplications, created a repository for Sales Analytics and Sales, Marketing Service and Contact Centre. The installls all complete successfully. ALl services start and I can log-in and view SampleAppLite.
However as soon as I try and change the repository and Catalog Path I get errors and cannot restart the BIServer or Presentation Server. (I have tired re-installing twice...)

Beginners guide to PowerPivot data models
Hi,
I've been using PowerPivot for a little while now but have finally given into the fact that my lack of knowledge about data modelling is causing me all kinds of problems.
I'm looking for recommendations on where I should start learning about data modelling for Powerpivot (and other software e.g. Tablea, Chartio etc). By data modelling I mean how I should best organise all the data that I want to analyse which is coming fomr
multiple sources. In my case my primary sources right now are:
Our main MySQL database
Google Analytics Data
Google Adwords data
MailChimp data
Various excels
I have bought two books - "Dax Formulas for PowerPivot" which is great but sparse on data modelling information and "Microsoft Excel 2013 - Building Data Models with PowerPivot" which looks excellent but starts of at I believe too advanced
a level.
Where should a beginner with no experience of data modelling, but intermediate/advanced experience of Excel go to learn skills for PowerPivot Data modelling?
By far the main issues is that our MySQL databases are expansive and include hundreds of tables across multiple databases and we need to be able to utilise data from all of them. I imagine that I somehow need to come up with a intermediary layer between
the Databases and Powerpivot which extracts and flattens the main data into fewer more important tables, but would have no idea how to do this.
Also to be clear, I am not looking at ways of modelling the MySQL database itself - our developers are happy with the database relationships etc, it just the modelling of that data within PowerPivot and how to best import that data.
Recommendations would be absolutely brilliant, its a fantastic product but right now I'm struggling to make the most of it.Thanks for the recommendations, I am aware of the last two of those and

I will take a look at SQLBI in more detail but from a very casual browse it seems like this too is targeted more at experienced users. There paid courses may definitely prove useful though.
I think what I'm getting at is that there are probably an increasing number of people like myself who have fallen into PowerPivot without a traditional background in databases and data modelling. In my case I have a small business of
15 employees and we were using Excel and PivotTables to do some basic analysis before soon discovering that our data was too complicated and that I needed something. PowerPivot definitely seems to solve that issue and I'm having much
better success now than I was without. I also feel quite competent with DAX and actually building tables from the PowerPivot data model.
What I'm lacking in is the very first step of cleaning and preparing raw data for import and then importing it into Powerpivot and setting up a efficient model. I have to be honest that your links above did bring
PowerQuery to my attention and it seems like a brilliant tool and one of the missing links. I would however still like to see a beginners guide to data import and model set-up as I don't think I've yet come across one either in book or
online form which explains the fundamentals well.

Upgrade Siebel Analytics 7.8.2 RPD to BI Applications 7.9.6.1 RPD
We are upgrading from Siebel Analytics 7.8.2 version to BI Applications 7.9.6.1 version. The Siebel Analytics RPD is customized and having custom catalogs which are based on Pharma tables and the Core model is not at all customized. So, I have followed the steps specified in section 'Upgrading the Oracle BI Repository for Industry-Specific Analytics Applications' of Upgrade guide. Its known that there are some datawarehouse changes occurred between these versions. One of these changes are,
W_ORG_D of Siebel 7.8.2 is replaced with W_PARTY_ORG_D in BI Apps 7.9.6.1,
W_PERSON_D of Siebel 7.8.2 is replaced with W_PARTY_PER_D in BI Apps 7.9.6.1.
In order to upgrade the RPD we need to make use of MAP file that comes with the installation of BI Apps 7.9.6.1. For this process I'm using the map file rename782-796.map while equilizing the RPDs. But I dont find any information related to the above schema changes in the map file even though they are Oracle shipped ones. So, after doing some analysis I have listed the Alias tables created on top of W_ORG_D in 7.8.2 RPD and similarly in 7.9.6.1 RPD and specified the mapping information of these Alias tables in existing MAP file. Equlized the RPDs using the modified MAP file and done the merge process. But I'm observing some issues like the merged RPD is having both W_ORG_D and W_PARTY_ORG_D tables in all the three layers. Can I get any help on fixing this issue.

Sharepoint 2013 Reporting Services & OLAP Cubes for Data Modeling.
I've been using PowerPivot & PowerView in Excel 2013 Pro for some time now so am now eager to get set up with Sharepoint 2013 Reporting Services.
Before set up Reporting Services I have just one question to resolve.
What are the benefits/differences of using a normal flat table set up, compared to an OLAP cube?
Should I base my Data Model on an OLAP Cube or just Connect to tables in my SQL 2012 database?
I realize that OLAP Cubes aggregate data making it faster to return results, but am unclear if this is needed with Data Modeling for Sharepoint 2013.

MikeSo yes, PV is an in-memory cube. When data is loaded from the data source, it's cached in memory, and stored (compressed) in the Excel file. (also, same concept for SSAS Tabular mode... loads from source, cached in mem, but also stored (compressed) in data
files, in the event that the server reboots, or something similar).
As far as performance, tabular uses memory, but has a shorter load process (no ETL, no cube processing)... OLAP/MDX uses less memory, by requiring ETL and cube processing... technically tabular uses column compression, so the memory consumption will be based
on the type of data (numeric data is GREAT, text not as much)... but the decision to use OLAP (MDX)/TAB (DAX) is just dependent on the type of load and your needs... both platforms CAN do realtime queries (ROLAP in multidimensional, or DirectQuery for tabular),
or can use their processed/in-memory cache (MOLAP in multidimensional, xVelocity for tabular) to process queries.
if you have a cube, there's no need to reinvent the wheel (especially since there's no way to convert/import the BIDS/SSDT project from MDX to DAX). If you have SSAS 2012 SP1 CU4 or later, you can connect PV (from Excel OR from within SP) directly to the
MDX cube.
Generally, the benefit of PP is for the power users who can build models quickly and easily (without needing to talk to the BI dept)... SharePoint lets those people share the reports with a team... if it's worthy of including in an enterprise warehouse,
it gets handed off to the BI folks who vet the process and calculations... but by that time, the business has received value from the self-service (Excel) and team (SharePoint) analytics... and the BI team has less effort since the PP model includes data sources
and calculations - aside from verifying the sources and calculations, BI can just port the effort into the existing enterprise ETL / warehouse / cubes / reports... shorter dev cycle.
