HT1335 Getting music off ipod formatted with a Mac

How do I get music off an ipod that has been formatted on a mac and transfer it to my windows computer?

That may be difficult.  The reverse would be easier because Macs can read the Windows disk format (FAT32) used on iPods.  Windows cannot read the disk format used by Macs, without additional (not free) software.  Here is one such product

If you can make your Windows PC access the iPod's disk, you can probably use one of the third-party methods or utilities for transferring song files from iPod to computer.  You cannot use iTunes for transferring song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  An Internet search on something like "ipod transfer" should provide some links.
Once the song files from the iPod are on your computer's drive, you can add them to the iTunes library and then re-sync the iPod as desired.

  • Old laptop died, can't get music off iPod

So I tried to follow the instructions for backing up my iPod, but I couldn't get it to work.
My old laptop died, but my iPod is fine. I want to transfer my songs from my iPod to the new laptop. My purchased music moved over just fine, but I can't get my CDs (which were ripped as mp3s) over to the new laptop. I'm using Windows, and when I mount the iPod as a hard drive, I only see the following folders:
    Calendars
    Contacts
    Notes
    iPod_Control (hidden)
Under iPod_Control, I have Accessories, Artwork, Device, iTunes, and Music subfolders.... the Music subfolder doesn't have any of the file names... any idea on how to quickly fix this? Thanks!

  • Computer crashed, how to get music off ipod onto itunes

My computer crashed, I lost everything. Is there a way to get the music I have on my ipod into my itunes? Other than just the purchased music? Thanks for the help!!
    Sunny

    Hello sunnydae,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • Concerns about getting music off iPod!!  Help!

Ok, I don't want to download any program to take songs off my iPod classic 160GB.
I am following this guideline taking the music from the 'hidden folder':
    http://www.metaphoriclabs.com/articles/5-ways-to-copy-music-off-your-ipod-window s-mac-os-x/
    TWO questions:
*1.) When I go in to click for the folder to be "unhidden" and 49 folders show up, are the songs that I have PURCHASED on itunes included in these songs?*
*2.) I am reading that when saving songs and putting them on iTunes, I am supposed to "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized." When I do this and go back into iTunes to see my music, EACH song is in a different folder.*
Why would people keep the music in folders instead just list the songs (or their code name) in a folder? It would be insane if I had to buy a new iPod and would have to click on each folder to add the song in it.
    Please help!

1.) When I go in to click for the folder to be "unhidden" and 49 folders show up, are the songs that I have PURCHASED on itunes included in these songs?
Yes - they will be randomly scattered among the 50 folders. Each media file has a randomised 4 letter filename but retains it's original filetype. Put Windows Explorer into Details view. Your older DRM'd iTunes store purchases will have a file type described something like *AAC Audio (Protecteed)*. Other purchases will be mixed with any other files you've imported in AAC format.
2.) I am reading that when saving songs and putting them on iTunes, I am supposed to "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized." When I do this and go back into iTunes to see my music, EACH song is in a different folder.
Why would people keep the music in folders instead just list the songs (or their code name) in a folder? It would be insane if I had to buy a new iPod and would have to click on each folder to add the song in it.
If your files are fully tagged, then when iTunes organises the files it will put each track in the form *iTunes Music\Album Artist\Album\## Track Name*. If you have a number of complete albums by different artists this is a logical structure, keeping tracks from the same album in a folder and albums by the same album artist together in a parent folder. If you have lots of single tracks from disparate artists & albums this might seem like a lot of folders but adding them to the library is a simple as adding the one top most folder so there is no need to click each individual folder to add songs. If, as I think you imply, the folder names consist of the random 4 character names then I take it that the bulk of your library was in WAV or another format that does not support tags. When iTunes tries to import the only information it has is the meaningless filename. Using one of the many availble iPod to PC transfer tools might enable these files to be imported back into iTunes along with some of their metadata, track name, artist, album etc.

  • Getting music off ipod, tried almost everything!!

I get errors when using mycomputer that say "Cannot copy KHAI: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check" and also get errors that say parameters are incorrect. Some files get copied, but it allways hangs on some of them. I've used the two programs Podutil and ipodcopy and they usually only copy a few before an error comes up. Whats going on? My ipod usually works fine and so does itunes

  • How to get music off ipod touch 5 and onto new hard drive

    Help.
My PC crashed. I have an itunes acct. I was able to back up most music to external hard drive - except that which was more recently purchased by son through his ipod touch 5 (that he got for Christmas.)
I see that ipod touch 5 will not open as an external storage device in order to download and back up songs to external hard drive or flash drive...
I have a new laptop. Itunes is not yet installed on it.
I am afraid that if I do install the Itunes - then he plugs in his Ipod to sync - he will sync to an empty folder - thus erasing his songs...
    Is this right?
Or do my libraries still exist?
I would really feel most comfortable if I could just get the songs off of his IPod and into back up before I install ITunes on the new laptop.
I can always re-import the songs back into Itunes, can't I?
I am not too computer savvy - please consider in reply.
    Thanks all!

"I see that ipod touch 5 will not open as an external storage device in order to download and back up songs to external hard drive or flash drive..."
Correct.  The iod touch is not a backup/storage device.
"I am afraid that if I do install the Itunes - then he plugs in his Ipod to sync - he will sync to an empty folder - thus erasing his songs..."
    Also correct.
"Or do my libraries still exist?"
Your library will only be where you put them.  You shoudl always maintain a backup copy of your comptuer.
Copy everything from the backup copy to your new computer.
You can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:  Without syncing - File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

  • Can't get music off ipod to computer

I am trying to get some music (from a CD) off my ipod to teh laptop..I have set computer for manual, etc. When I look in ipod music library they are not lsited by artist as in itunes so i don't know what to drag and drop. HELP!!!!

Itunes will not allow you to transfer music from the Ipod to Itunes however their are workarounds if you require access to the data. Here is one such clumsy workaround (or you could use some third party software)
    1) If Itunes is already installed disk use may need to enabled so you can see the Ipod in my computer. Itunes hides your ipod from windows otherwise.
    2) Make sure you can view hidden files. In MY computer go to tools>folder options>view>show hidden files and folders.
    3) Windows should see the ipod and your music should be on your ipod in several hidden folders. To be safe I would copy it all to say your desktop.
    4) Install Itunes http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and the Ipod updater http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ (if you don't already have it installed)
After that drag the copied folder to Itunes (drag and drop or in Itunes (File>add folder to library)
You may need to authorise your new computer by playing it in the library first.

  • Need help getting music off ipod

I used to have 2 libraries on my itunes (mine & hubby's). Now it only shows hubby's music library - no classical. How do I get the missing music that is on my ipod back in the itunes library so I can sync my new ipod and get all the music?

You will need a third-party utility such as Pod To Mac, Disk Aid, or Phone Disk - MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.

  • Computer virus killed my computer -- can i get music off ipod?

i got a virus on my computer so when it was fixed, everything was erased. i didn't have time to change my ipod to manual update. i have about 20gb of songs on my ipod now and don't have the money to replace it all. is there any way i can get the music from my ipod onto my computer?

    Shellie,
I hope you take this as an opportunity to learn a very important lesson: Back up your iTunes library as soon as you can after resolving this situation because right now you are only one glitch of your iPod away from losing your music entirely.
Many people come to the Discussions having lost their music in just such situations and, believe me, it's not a happy time for anyone.
If you place any importance on your playlists and the data they depend on, you will want to include your iTunes Library files in your back-up regimen as well.
Anyways, that's the lecture. The answer to your problem should be found in this post:

Good Luck! But once your music is back on your computer, remember:
Your music is valuable - please back it up!

  • Can't get music off ipod into itunes

I have an ipod touch that will not transfer songs onto itunes on new computer. I added the computer to the network so that's not the problem. I have tried "tranfer purchases", and only some of them are added to my itunes library. I have other music on my computer that I want to add to my ipod, but it keeps telling me that it will only erase everything on it and then add my itunes library. I don't want to loose everything that's on it, since it will only partially transfer the music.
Does this description of my problem make sense?
I'm hoping someone can help me!!

The music sync is ONE WAY - computer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchases. You can transfer itunes purchases only: Without syncing - File>Transfer Purchases
The ipod will sync with ONE computer only. When you sync to another, it will indeed erase the current content and replace with content from the new computer.
You should move everything from the old computer, or your backup copy of the old computer, to your new one.
The ipod touch is not a storage device or backup device. It is intended to mirror the selected content of your computer.

  • Hard drive died, how to get music off iPod

My hard drive died so I lost iTunes. I've reinstalled iTunes and need to move all my music from my iPod to iTunes. If I plug my iPod into my computer, will iTunes take all that music and create a new music library, or will it go the other way around and the new empty iTunes will remove all the music from my iPod?
    I hope that makes sense

Regular forum poster, Zevoneer, has written a very detailed list on your options of how to do this. I need to add one thing. Once you have recovered your library, PLEASE BACKUP YOUR MUSIC, so you don't have to go through this aggravation, again.
Wrong link, let me find the right one & re-post.

Go to iTunes and to a playlist/library. go to the song(s) you want to get off your iPod and delete them from your library/playlist by either right clicking the song and hitting clear, or by hitting the delete/backspace button on you keyboard. you will then get a pop-up saying "Do you want to move the selected item into your Recycle bin or keep it in your iTunes Music Folder?"
I think if you move it into the iTunes music folder then you are able to get to it if, later, you would like to retrieve, rather than deleting it forever.
Below that message you will see 3 buttons that say:
Cancel Move to Recycle Bin Keep Files
Depending on what you want to do then click the button.

  • How do i get music off an old ipod

How do i get music off an old ipod classic into my windows 8 system when it doesn't find the ipod when i plug it into the usb?

    Hi aekdbaker ,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you have music on your iPod that you would like to transfer into your iTunes library on your Mac.
If those songs you wish to transfer were purchased, there are two different ways you can accomplish this. The first way, which does not even require you connecting your iPod to the computer, would be to re-download them from iTunes in the Cloud directly to your iTunes library. Directly connecting your iPod to your Mac to transfer purchases is an option as well. Instructions for both methods of gathering your past purchases in your iTunes library on your Mac are available in the attached article.

Can I use I tune match to get my music off iPod classic?

The iPod classic shouldn't be used to store the only copy of music or be considered a backup device. Put the music on a regular external drive or DVDs.
