HT1338 Trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 but 10.6 won't allow me to what am I doing wrong?

Why can't I upgrade from 10.5.8 to OS 10.6?

You need to use a retail DVD(phone the online Apple Store) and not a downloadable updater or a DVD which originally shipped with a Mac.

iTunes is not the Mac App Store.
In your dock it would be this icon:
The forum for it specifically is here:Using Mac App Store

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

    Hello AdeShaw,
You may need to restart the computer, if you haven't done so already. Should that fail to resolve the issue, we've an article that can help resume the download.

  • I'm trying to upgrade from 3.6.28 but when I do I get a pop up saying that I have Firefox running so it can't even though I tell it to replace the version that'

I have tried, unsuccessfully, to upgrade from 3.6.28 but have been unable to do so. A pop up shows up telling me that I should and offers a line to click on to go ahead and do it. I followed all the instructions and after dragging the Firefox logo to the applications box a window pops up saying there is a version already in the applications folder and do I want to replace it. I clicked on replace and thought I was good to go. When I clicked on the Firefox logo I get the original window telling me I need to update. I clicked on the "About this Firefox and find that I'm still running 3.6.28. HOW DO I UPGRADE? I'm very concerned about losing all my bookmarks so please help!

I want to make sure you're using the auto-update system, because that's the safest most reliable way to go, and it shouldn't appear in the download manager, so I lets make sure you're doing it right. <br/>
This is a screencast I made a couple of years ago. It refers to 3.5 and 3.6, but the steps are still the same: http://ilias.ca/screencasts/ISUHD45.mov
If that doesn't work, then maybe your Snow Leopard account doesn't have permission to update applications?

  • HT4623 Hi, every body please help trying to update my I pad with new iOS but there is no soft wear update tab what I am doing wrong

    Hi,
all trying to update my iPad with new iOS but when in the settings tab there is no software update tab
What I am doing wrong please or i,m going to throw it

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes as described half-way down the page that you posted from.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes and selecting 'Backup' (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC)
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
A first gen iPad will be updated to iOS 5.1.1, and an iPad 2 and 3 to iOS 6.1.3

  • When trying to connect my ipod to my 2011 nissan al I get is reading files. What am I doing wrong

When connecting my ipod to my 2011 nissan radio system all that shows up on the radio is reading files. What am I doing wrong and how do I correct the problem?

You can try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPOd.
However, some accessorie,s like car systems, stopped working after iOS 5.  Have you contacted the manufacturer of the car sytem?

All of my music is not loading on my iPad when I attempt to sync? What am I doing wrong?

You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
For other music you need to get them from where you got them before.

  • HT1923 Hi I have tried in upgrade to latest Itunes version but I keep getting MSVCR80.dll missing notification whats all this about?/ & how do I overcome it

I have tried installing new version of itunes on my pc (windows 7 64 bit) but I keep getting an message saying MSVCR80.dll missing. Can amyone tell me how to resolve this please?

I've just (finally) managed to fix this problem today. I checked the Apple Support forums, and it seems a lot of people are having the same problem.
I rang the Apple Support line, and the very helpful man (thanks Alan!) talked me through it stage by stage. If you go to the following page on the internet: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376   it takes you through the process. WARNING - it takes a little time!
Basically, the first thing you have to do is go to your Program Files and double click on your iTunes folder. There'll be a number of files with the suffix .dll - you need to move all the .dll files from that folder to your desktop - you can simply click and drag them on the desktop..
Next, uninstall iTunes - go to Control Panel / Add/Rempve Programs and when the list comes up remove iTunes. This will take a few minutes... Then reboot your computer.
Next, go back to Control Panel / Add Remove and Remove - IN THIS ORDER -
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
    Reboot again!
Next, check in your Program Files that the iTunes folder is completely gone - if it has, great: if it hasn't, right-click on the folder and press Shift and Delete - it will say "Are you sure you want to completely remove the folder "iTunes"? Click on "Yes".
    Reboot!
Then go to the iTunes download page and voila! It should download iTunes without any problems... well it did for me.... Good luck!

  • HT3728 After upgrading to mountain lion, my Mac no longer sees the Time Capsule.  What am I doing wrong?

After I upgraded to Mountain Lion, my Mac cannot access the data disk on the Time Capsule.  Who else is having this problem and have you been able to solve it?

    Bonjour PanicRev16
I use Grapher 2D 3D on my early 2006 iMac, but I tried it on my wife's Macbook Pro with Lion then Mountain Lion : no problem with Grapher 2.1  3D gcx files, Grapher 2.3 loves them !
You can try the 3D Grapher 2.1 files from the website  http://y.barois.free.fr/grapher/  and see the result on your Mac Mountain Lion.
I updated Grapher documentation and bugs of this website on 15th december 2012 (Lion, then Mountain Lion).
      Au revoir,

  • I bought an iPad from a friend and can't activate it under my account!  What am I doing wrong?

The previous owner says it's been deleted from iCloud account, but when I try to activate it, it still says it's linked to former owners email!

He needs to sign onto his iCloud account on a computer and remotely erase the device: https://www.icloud.com
Once he has erased the device, then he can click on "Remove From Account"

  • I have iCloud running on my iPad. But when trying to get my macbook pro on iCloud, my Apple ID is not accepted.  What am I doing wrong?

    Can you help?

I know it is not the best advice, but the easiest way would be to delete your app from your device and then to re-download it from the App Store again by using your new Apple ID.

  • I have tried to post a question, but it down not appear in the list. what am I doing wrong?

I cannot reset my iPad. I can't turn it off either.
I can't sync it with my computer because the iPad has a passcode.
I tried a reset holding down the stop button and homie button until the apple logo
appears. It appears and stays on for about 4 minutes That is replaced with the
spinning dot. In about 5 or 6 minutes, that goes off too.
It is running iOS 7. something.
    help!
    thanks

Yes. You did state that and I missed it. My apologies.
You you could try erasing the device using Find My iPhone, and then try to restore, but if the power button isn't working .... and it's a hardware problem .... you would still be in a bit of a sticky situation.
IF you just connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes, does iTunes see the iPad? If it does, can you click on Restore in the Summary Tab?
