HT1338 whenever I access my screen saver my computer freezes. Trying to change my background picture.

Hey, I am trying to change my background picture but everytime I try my computer freezes. What do I need to do, help.
Thanks in advance!

I just did a little test and changed something in my Screen Saver settings and looked to see what changed (just had a Finder window open in my ~/Library/Preferences and had the "Date Modified" column selected so that the most recent change would appear at the top) and noticed that the file called com.apple.screensaver.xxxx.plist file changed (the xxxx is a hex number that is part of your UUID, or perhaps the whole UUID, as have seen it both ways). This screensaver preferences file is located in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost which makes sense, as every user would need their own set of screen saver preferences on each host.
Looking at this file in TextWrangler it looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>askForPassword</key>
<integer>0</integer>
<key>idleTime</key>
<integer>300</integer>
<key>lastNonRandomModuleName</key>
<string>Flurry</string>
<key>moduleName</key>
<string>Flurry</string>
<key>modulePath</key>
<string>/System/Library/Screen Savers/Flurry.saver</string>
<key>tokenRemovalAction</key>
<integer>0</integer>
</dict>
</plist>
Hope that helps.
One thing I did have a question about is how to find the UUID. On a Mac Pro system the command:
system_profiler | grep -i uuid
returned the expected number that was part of the com.apple.screensaver.xxxx.plist file, but this did not work on a MacBook Pro. No luck trying to find out why so far. Anyone have any ideas? There is also a UUID associated with a disk volume, that appears to have nothing to do with the UUID associated with the system. So the UUID I'm talking about here is for the system, not a disk.

  • System Pref's freeze when trying to access "Desktop & Screen Saver"

    Hi.
Every time I access the Desktop & Screen Saver category from the System Pref's window, the System Pref's freeze up (spinning beach ball of death appears) and I have to force quit.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks all.

Apparently, there's corruption somewhere. Move the com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.systempreferences.plist files out of ~/Library/Preferences/ to the desktop, move the three or four com.apple.screensaver plist files out of ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ to the desktop, log out and back in. Now try to set the Desktop & Screensaver PrefPane. Note that you'll have to reset some items in System Preferences. If that fixes the problem, then one or more of those plist files is the culprit. You have two options. Reset your System Prefs and throw away the files you moved to the desktop or replace the new ones with the ones you took out, one at a time, until you find the one causing the problem.

  • Can't Access Desktop & Screen Saver Preferences

    Hi everyone,
    Can't figure this one out!!!
In the main System Preferences>Show All, the title of Desktop & Screen Saver icon has changed to "DesktopScreenEffectsPrefDock". It is all smashed together like that and partially overlays the "Appearance" title to the left of it.
When I click on the icon, the new window appears, but the Desktop & Screen Saver preferences don't display inside it. The title appears in the top bar of the window, but it is empty below that. Any other preferences icons I click on display fine.
    Any thoughts?
I did just have the processor upgrade done, and also removed some bad memory. Not sure if that's contributing? I'd be grateful for any help.

    TJ,
I am unfamiliar with all of the options provided by YASU, and other than flipping a coin or throwing caution to the wind I am unable to advise.
Perhaps an Archive and Install followed by the 10.3.9 Combo Update, and Security Update 2006-003 (10.3.9 Client) may be called for.

  • I'm using  lion 10.7.1 and ever since upgrading  my preferances are not saved after I shut off the computer. My screen saver is always photos even after changing it, itune always asks if I want to upgrade, even after telling it never to.

When I turn off the computer my preferances are forgot. My screen saver aways goes to photos. Ittune always ask if I want to upgrade even after telling it not to . firefox always goes the upgrade page  a progam I  have to save my clipboard resets itself.

This does appear to be an issue with synergy, but I've also noticed on my C2D Macbook Pro that the screen does not wake from sleep when I simply touch or move around on the touchpad.  Now, I have to hit a button (like return) to get the monitor to wake up.  Submitting a button strike through synergy does not work, though.  Neither does a mouse click on either the trackpad or through synergy.
It also appears that synergy is functioning even though the monitor is off.  My mouse does move to the screen and progress across it (I have a three monitor setup with the Mac in the middle, so I can move it off my left system to my Mac, keep moving, and eventually it will show up on the third screen).  If synergy weren't working, I would expect it to go from screen 1 to screen 3.
So I think there's something up with how Lion detects that the monitor should be reenabled, and synergy is even more affected by that decision.

  • Screen saver locks up, won't allow changes

After bringing everything over from the previous iMac, went to set up the desktop and screen saver system preferences.  Desktop worked like always, but when you go to make a selection for which screen saver you want, goes into the endless spinning ball and the only way to get out of it is a force quit.
Apple help guy said to dump the com.apple. file, that worked once and then back to locking up.  Reinstalled Leopard from the Mac disk, but with the same result.  Did show up on the first boot-up but then back to normal next log in.
Any ideas?  (went to search the tip section but couldn't figure out how to get a question in)

I'm not sure I understand the current behavior: you say it still locked up, yet that the canned screen savers now work. Can you explain?
One thing others have suggested for a similar issue is to make sure the iLife Support 9.0.3;/a> update is installed, but I'm not sure that applies to you.
Also, make sure any custom screen savers you have are not PPC-only ones.
Well, those were the three magic words—downloaded the update, rebooted, and the screen savor pref worked perfectly, just like it should!! Don’t know why this upgrade never showed up in the software update from Apple, it certainly should have.
Here’s what it was doing in more detail: The desktop side of the pref worked with no problem, but when you went into the screen saver side you could do one thing--say pick one of the canned saver and close the window. But if you went to scroll down to get to the ‘choose folder’ option and opened that up, the beechball came on forever, and the only way to close the window was a force quit, which meant you lost any changes you wanted.
Thanks for your quick replies, do appreciate it. Been a long time Mac user (1985 to be exact—what a change from the original to the new!), and one of the things I’ve always liked about the experience is the discussion forums. Hope anyone else having this problem can find the answer here by searching

  • Every time my MacBook Pro goes to sleep or the screen saver activates, it freezes and I must force a reboot.

This just started happening randomly a couple months ago.  Now it happens on every sleep or screen saver instance.  I cannot trace it to a specific OSX update.  I have gone as far as a full OSX recovery and restoration of Time Machine backup.  Where can I look to get to the bottom of this?

  • 13" MBP Screen glitches and computer freezes when I hold it wrong...

Sorry for the newbie question. I just got my MBP and ordered the Kingston 8gb deal on buy.com last week. After install I noticed if I pick up the computer and hold it on the right hand side almost underneath the option button, the screen glitches and turns into a bunch of colored lines then crashes. I have to hold the power button down to shut it off then restart. I kind of feel a little bit of give at that area...is that a known issue or does it have anything to do with the new 3rd party ram? Please help!

  • Not letting me change my screen saver

Every time I open up system preferences and click on "Desktop & Screen Saver" and then click on the "Screen Saver" tab... the system pref. freezes and closes unexpectedly
It lets me change my background but whenever i try to change my screen saver it keeps "Quitting unexpectedly"
then it gives me the option to reopen system pref., report the message to apple (which i have done) or close it... then when I click reopen, i click again on desktop and screen saver and it freezes again and another error message opens up and says
the application system preferences quit unexpectedly after it was reopened... and i have a new set of options
    Close, Try Again, or Report
So i click try again and it does actually let me access the screen saver tab... and i change it from what it is now which is the iTunes artwork
and when i click close or quit system pref. another window pops up that says...
New settings have been created for this application.. do you wish to use these settings from now on? and so i click "Use New Settings" rather than "Use original settings"
but then when i start my screensaver... it STILL is my original screen saver that i had before...
so WHY won't it let me change it
    I have a MacBook Pro 15" glossy, 160 GB 2.4GHZ
i bought it in July so its still brand new so what is the problem?
    Help would be MUCH appreciated

  • Os x 10.8.3 freezes when changing screen saver

I recently installed 10.8.3. One of the glitches is that when I attempt to change the screen saver, my computer freezes. Is there a fix for this?

try this - not sure if it will work for you but it's worth a try.
open disk utility - verify your disk permissions - repair if errors are found then restart your macbook once the repairs are done.
see if that changes the way your macbook responds to changing your screen saver.

  • Computer freezes upon trying to activate screen saver?

I recently went on vacation and downloaded some pictures to use as my screen saver. But everytime I go into Prefrences to choose a picture to be used as my screen saver, my computer freezes on me. Does anybody know how I can resolve this problem?

    Ces:
A drive that's too full can cause all sorts of problems, but I doubt that freeing up space will, in itself, resolve it. Let's hope I'm wrong! We'll soon see, once you free up some space on your startup volume. If this is the only abberration you're experiencing with the operating system, I'd go ahead and resolve your drive space issue first, keeping this issue open for some suggestions from the Members.
BTW - The reason I previously asked if you can launch System Preferences and change the Screensaver to one of the standard ones (without crashing) is to eliminate the files in that particular pictures folder - as well as the slideshow routine that drives the screensaver - as the cause of the problem.

  • Screen saver broken

I set the screen saver to the iTunes artwork one, set it to change a picture every .5 seconds, and set it to 2 rows. It immediately crashed and since then, I cannot access the screen saver settings in System Preferences and whenever it goes to screen saver, the screen just blinks rapidly. What can I do to resolve this?
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm not sure if it would do anything but try Repairing Permissions and Repair the Disk via Disk Utility. Otherwise, you will probably have to reinstall your OS.

  • ITunes 7.1 affecting fan speed in album art screen saver?

After installing the update I immediately started noticing my fan gradually increasing speed until it is extremely fast/loud, whenever the album art screen saver comes on. I've since changed my saver to a photo album saver since I can't take the noise. (And I'm fearful of the box taking flight.) Has anyone else experienced this? (Quad 2.5 G5 PowerMac)
    Quad 2.5 G5 PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Same problem that I am having. I enjoyed the album art screen saver. Since I updated to v7 the screen saver doesnt seem to work correctly. Spent the first day of release getting most of my albums (shockingly more then I thought). Enabled the screen saver, but only got 4 albums to show up, no others. Testing it more, I removed the art for the albums that showed up, which got me to 1 album, removed and then got the error that my iTunes Library had no albums with artwork. Weird.. Removed my library, reloaded, and ALL the artwork is gone. Tried going a few albums at a time manually and it shows in iTunes, the new Album Art Dir updates with new stuff. but nothing for the screen saver. Good idea in principle, kinda bad in excuction is my thoughts right now. Hope for a fix soon.

  • Slide Show Screen Saver Superimposed Images Flag or Ball -- Bug?

    Hi,
I have searched and found two other archived questions on this topic, but no real answers. Please help!
I have the screen saver set to do a slide show from the Pictures folder, where I have lots of family photos. This works fine, but about every 10th photo or so, it shows the picture, and the next image is the same photo, with a weird low-res ("jagged edges"), blown-up (full-screen), icon-like image in the middle, superimposed upon my image. It's usually circular, often has a national flag or comic scheme to it, sometimes has a face, and always has effects to make it look round like a ball, which it usually is in shape (though sometimes it's not circular). When I look, my images have not been altered recently and don't seem affected, so the problem seems to reside in the system, right?
I'm not a techie but I have used Mac since 1985 and remember reading several years back in one of the Mac mags about such a problem -- whether termed a trojan or whatever. I do have all my old Mac data and apps in a folder on my mini, so it's possible it could have been pulled over from my last Mac and a remnant of some prior vulnerability. But I've never seen this behavior before OSX, neither Norton nor ClamXav finds a problem, and I can't seem to find ref to that article by net searching or here. What causes this, and how can I solve it? It really bothers my mother-in-law to see pix of her grandkids with weird flags superimposed on them, and I'm wondering if this is some Mac problem with more serious consequences not yet discovered by Norton or ClamXav. Thanks.
P.S. Here's the text of one of the archived messages:

Whenever the slide show runs from my pictures out of iphoto on my screen saver, other pictures appear occasionally on top of my pictures. They are usually other country flags or weird shapes with jagged edges. Any idea how to keep this from happening or where these other pictures are coming from? Thanks.
    Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The problem is not with the screensaver but rather that the Pictures folder insists on having the iChat flags alias inside it. Since the screensaver recognizes aliases I have moved all my photos out of the "Pictures" folder and into another folder called "Pictures not screensaver". This is because the screensaver will show ALL pictures in the Pictures folder regardless of how embarassing they are. That leaves the Pictures folder for just aliases to pictures or folders of pictures. This allows me to control exactly what pictures are shown on the screensaver. It is an area of OSX that needs some improvement.
Regarding the superimposed images, that is normal. Those iChat icons are transparent, while JPGs are not transparent. Screensaver piles newer pictures on top of older pictures. If it piles transparent images such an GIF or PNG on top of previous pictures they may be transparent and cause an alarming effect.
I have imagined this feature could be used in some cool way but have never seen anyone do it. For example, nice JPG backgrounds with semi-transparent PNGs on top with zooming animals. I suspect Apple will introduce such a screensaver in 10.5.

  • Screen Saver Prefs crash

Whenever I click the Screen Saver tab in the Desktop and Screensaver Pref Panel, then Sys Prefs crashes and quits. It only happens for one user account. Any advice?
    thanks
    Ken

This issue is often caused by a plist file which is corrupt or contains an invalid setting. To fix this issue, create a new folder on the desktop and then choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ as the folder's path and drag everything with a name containing com.apple.screensaver to the folder on the desktop. If the issue persists, return to the ByHost folder, press the Command and Up keys simultaneously, and then move the file named com.apple.desktop.plist to the folder you created earlier. If everything works properly with both files in the folder you created, it is safe to throw it away.

  • Screen saver not kicking in

I have my screen saver set to a 2 min time out and to show up for music...and nothing is happening...any one having this isse...other than that....love apple tv...

I noticed my screen saver problem first while accessing the screen saver and syncing a whole lot of new photos.
Perhaps the AppleTV is unable to display slideshows while performing some kinds of synchronisation, and/or it can also "permanently" crash the slideshows requiring a reset.
All working now for me (let the sync finish, performed a reset), so I can't test it and don't really have the time... but hope the idea helps someone!
