HT1386 Is it possible to control what parts of my Itunes library sync to my IPad? I want to sync my photo library but not my music for example?
IPad allows me to access my music and movies via wifi directly.... it doesn't allow me access to my picture library (the one I can access via my apple TV... so it looks like if I want to see my picture library on my IPad I have to actually sync it up.... the IPad has enough memory as long as I don't clog the memory with my music (which I DON'T need on the IPad).
But... I can't seem to find a way to control what syncs and what doesn't .... do I as a user actually have any control?
Start iTunes on the computer you usually sync with. Connect your iPad and select the iPad in the left column of iTunes on your computer. In the right column select Music. Make the selection to sync only selected albums and tunes and then select those you want on the iPad. Then click on Apply and Sync.
To remove any. USC syned this way go through this process again but deselect those items you want removed. Then click on Apply and Sync.

I of course am assuming here you didn't use Disk Utility to format the drive first before installing, that would wipe out your files and programs for sure.
So what to do, what to do.
Well there is hope for you as long as the drive wasn't Filevaulted.
I'll explain. When a hard drive writes data for the first time to a drive, it starts at the very top and works it's way down.
When OS X was installed the first time, it was at the top of the drive, unless you upgraded then the upgraded OS X could have been written elsewhere.
Now when you just reinstalled OS X, the new OS went on the top of the drive, overwriting any data that was there previously, so what was there you have lost forever which is about 8GB or so. If it was the previous OS there, then your more in luck because only the old OS X was overwritten.
The remaining space on the drive still can have a copy of your files, provided it's not overwritten yet.
It's because when a hard drive deletes data or reformats, it doesn't remove the data off the drive or overwrites it immediately, it's just made so it's SPACE is available for new files to be written there.
So technically one can recover the deleted data off a non-encrypted/scrubbed hard drive with special software.
The way it does this is it reads the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, and through a lot of figuring out, can tell what that file is and what it belongs too.
So what you will have to do is this:
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
or if you don't have the skills, then take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they can do a direct image of the drive and then you can run Data Rescue on it to rebuild your files. -
I have been trying to figure out if I can use the songs in my itunes library as ringtones but am having no luck. I downloaded an app that is supposed to make it possible but can't get that to work either. Does anyone know how to do this? Would appreciate any input. Thanks.
It is possible to create a ringtone with a designated 30 seconds or less section of a chosen song as long as the song or music was not purchased from the iTunes Store - or with music purchased from the iTunes Store that does not include DRM protection.

If your iTunes library is on an external hard drive, but iTunes is not recognizing the library, first make sure the right library is selected.
You can use these steps to make sure iTunes is opening the library on your external drive:
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you're using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu, choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
If you're using a Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
You should see one of these screens:
Pick Choose Library and locate the library on your external hard drive.

If the right library is selected, but you do not see your songs, try re-creating the library using the instructions found here:

Is it possible to move just part of my iTunes content (i.e., only TV shows), keeping the rest of the Library in place? I have purchased several seasons of some TV shows, which take up 102 GB on my harddrive, inside my iTunes Media Folder. I don't want to move my entire Library of music and apps etc to the external harddrive (HD), but I rarely watch the TV shows, so wouldn't mind them being located on an external HD, which I would plug in before trying to watch the shows through iTunes?
Any advice?
Thanks!I don't think you can simultaneously have two libraries open. But you can have your media spread across multiple disk drives. Just change your iTunes preferences such that the option "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is not selected. That way, new items can remain on your external drive if that's where you add them from.
The only caution is if you ever add items to your library from some "temporary" location, such as a USB drive. With these preference changes, iTunes would keep the native file on the USB drive, which would possibly lead to you deleting the file and losing the link. So, when you have your preferences to allow you to add new items to iTunes without copying them to the iTunes Music folder, you would want to put the native files in the desired location first, then add to iTunes.
To move existing videos and podcasts to the external drive, you can either do that as you have been (moving the native files and correcting the ! warning), or simply delete them from the library (but keep the native files) then re-add them from their new location on the external drive (you'd lose play history and ratings though, but may not be an issue for videos and podcasts). -
Safari and firefox stop working after a few minutes of browsing, regardless of what site I'm on. I have to restart my computer to get internet access again but it only works for a few more minutes, then I have to restart again. I don't get a spinning ball, it just stops working at whatever page it's on. I can close the program just fine but when I re-open it, either safari or firefox, it freezes trying to load the hompage. This started a few days ago after trying to stream a movie on my computer. I'm on a Mac Air OS X Version 10.6.8 and have downloaded all updates. When I go into finder, it says I have over 80 gigs available. Is there some other memory cache that I need to check? Thanks so much for your help.

I'm not trying to belittle your issues; you're certainly having them and I know first hand how annoying an intermittent AirPort issue can be. (In fact, mine was due to an AirPort driver bug that no one else seemed to suffer from.)
The single best diagnostic you could do is take your system running 10.5.7 to an Apple Store, and try using their in-store network.
If your machine performs flawlessly, it may be a router issue.
If your machine has connectivity issues there, it may be a hardware problem with your machine.
There have been numerous people in multiple threads over the years who swore that an update was buggy because things used to work, but returned later to sheepishly admit that they took their machine in, a problem was found and fixed, and now their Mac works flawlessly with the newer software.
But simply reinstalling 10.5.5 in no way means the explanation of how firmware bugs may be at play here is incorrect.
In the context of that explanation, all you've done is possibly reinstall software that asks to add "2 + 3." -
ITunes Library File Not Valid! What the Heck?
I have 11,500 songs in my music library and am running iTunes 7.0.2. My iTunes Library file from time-to-time becomes corrupted, on probably at least a weekly basis. I have no idea what's causing this.
Here's the typical scenario ... iTunes works fine, I quit it, and the next time I open it it shows the dialogue box that says, "Importing 'iTunes Libray.xml'..." Then it organizes the files and a dialogue box indicates "iTunes Library" does not appear to be a valid iTunes Library file ... Renamed damaged file ..."
When it's finally all done, I get my music library back minus all my playlists as well as EQ and volume settings.
This happened today and my most recent backup (done earlier in the day) was also corrupted. This is why I've learned to keep a set of four recent backups just to insure I have a reliable and useable one not more than a couple of days old. But it seems a very unnecessary hassle and I'm always losing adjustments made to my database!
Anyway ... would anyone among our distinquished and experienced iTunes geeks out there have a clue as to why this is happening OR any suggestions as to what I might do to help alleviate the problem?
Is anyone aware of a program that will search for corrupted files within your music library? I suspect this might be part of the problem.

PowerBook G4 17" | 80GB Video iPod Mac OS X (10.4.5)It seems like the ITL file is not being properly written after iTunes closes. Then when you re-open iTunes, it cannot load the ITL file and creates a new one. Forcing you to recreate your Library manually, again and again.
Several things to check:
-Double check to see that the ITL file or the folder it resides in is not read-only.
-Using Windows Explorer, right-click on the file (or folder) name, go to Properties.
-If it is, then close iTunes, change it, and reopen iTunes.

Once the main cause of the inability to save the ITL file is corrected, you'll need to recreate your Library one last time to finally save it. No way to resurrect the original one, unless you had backup copies of the ITL file. -
So i used to have this album in my itunes library but i deleted it by accident and i found out its nt any where on my computer and it's nt in my itunes back up either. I took it off my ipod about a month ago because i had to create a backup. Between that time span when my ipod was blank i had deleted that album off itunes so when i downloaded all my stuff from my backup onto my ipod the album was gone and it was like a HUGE album about a hundred or so songs what do i do to get it back???
I have a master iTunes file that contains all the music that I or my children have bought and then my own collection within the file. That song, 'Mercy, Mercy Me/I Want You' is gone from both lists
Nabitnak, Not sure what kind of master file you are keeping, but the song file is probably in your backup.
Why is that song not available on iTunes? I can get it on Amazon.
The iTunes Store, like any retailer, does not have 100% of all existing items. But anyway, if you can buy it on one store, it hardly matters why another store does not have it.
The coincidence of my missing song and iTune's missing the same song is beyond suspicious.
Maybe, although if you have a backup it should be there.
To address the other part of your question, "I can find it on You Tube, why not iTunes?": Youtube has content that is uploaded by users. Music retailers such as iTunes have content that they are licensed to sell as downloads. The two things have nothing to do with each other. -
I have over 2000 tunes in my ITunes library but I cannot use most of them because their "Original files" cannot be found. What can I do to correct this ?
This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

I am trying to edit my music list and then sync it to my iPhone 5 so I don't run out of storage space. However, I see the check marks on the iTunes library but am unable to uncheck them? How do I manually edit what will be synced to my phone? (the check marks are not bolded, does this mean they are not in my library but only on my phone?)
You uncheck the music in your iTunes library on your computer and along with sync only checked songs and videos selected under the Summary selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, only checked songs in your iTunes library will be transferred to your iPhone or remain on your iPhone and the unchecked songs in your iTunes library that are currently on your iPhone will be removed when syncing.
Or make use of iTunes playlists and choose selected playlists, albums, artists under the Music selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and select the playlists below that you want transferred to your iPhone. -
I have an older iPhone (3gs) and need to upgrade to a newer phone (4S). I need to get my NOTES, CALENDAR, CONTACTS, PICTURES, etc backed up on iTunes so I can get that data loaded onto the new phone. But not sure how to do that. When I open iTunes it has a button that say "Back Up iPhone", but I'm not sure what that does. When I go into the sync options it say I have another user account and asks me if I want to merge of replace. I'm assuming it's trying to tell me I have an older iTunes Library, but don't know that. Geez, maybe people over 60 shouldn't have iPhones, iTunes just bafles me.

Hi, so I pushed autofill because I thought that it would put music on my phone from a different iTunes library but it didn't work, and now the songs show up grey in my music on my phone and they won't play, but they are still there. What can I do to fix this and get rid of the grey songs?
Go back to iTunes, select the Music tab, uncheck the 'sync music; button, then hit apply.

I have tried to install iCloud on to my Windows Vista pc. No control panel is present and when I try to login to iCloud using my iTunes id, I am told that it is an Apple id but not set up for the cloud. without the control panel where do I set up my iCloud id?
You can not setup a new iCloud account using a PC. You must use an Apple device (Mac or iPhone/iPad) to create the account, then sign into it using your PC.
