HT1391 How do I locate my stolen iPad Serial Number??

My iPad was stolen in Odessa, Ukraine - the local police asked for the serial number which I did not have. I have the original receipt at home with a hand written number on it and I am unsure if this is the actual serial number of the iPad. I know there is a facility, by using my Apple ID to retrieve this but am unable to find how? Please help?

If you have a backup of the iPad on your computer's iTunes then in iTunes you can go into Edit > Preferences (iTunes > Preferences if you are using a Mac), and on the Devices tab hover your mouse pointer over the backup's name : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4061

I wish I could find a way to identify my iPad serial number. It was stolen from me a month ago, I could trace it to the street name but the police so far has done nothing. I was told I could trace using the serial number unfortunately it was stolen right after I got it so I don't have the box neither. I need this iPad for my studies. I can't afford buying a new one.

You cannot trace your iPad via its serial number. If you set up your iPad and authorized "Find My iPad" in Settings, you could go to icloud.com, enter your Apple ID, then attempt to find your iPad.
However, if the the thief isn't connected to a WiFi network, or has reset the iPad, or you didn't authorize "Find My iPad", you're out of luck. It can't be found.
As for your police, that's not an issue that we can help you with. Some police departments will help. Some won't.

Change your iTunes (Apple ID) password along with any other password that was stored in the iPod. If any passwords are associated with credit cards, contact the CC company and get your card replaced (with a new number). If any passwords are associated with your bank or any savings institution, contact them also and discuss approprate action with them.
The "Find my..." function is pretty much useless if the device is in the hands of a thief. All that is necessary is for the thief to connect to any computer with iTunes and "Restore as new."
The only real protection you have is with the personal information on the device rather than the physical device itself. Something as small as an iPod should have a strong 8-digit (or longer) password AND be configured for automatic wipe in the event of ten consecutive incorrect password entries.

Did you set up find my ipad on teh ipad itself BEFORE it was stolen?
If not, then there is nothing you can do.

I'm doing this in iTunes 11 on Windows.
So, in iTunes, if you don't have the menu bar showing, hit ctrl+b.
Now, make sure you have something to write with handy, as you're going to need to be fast.
When the menu bar pops up, hold down ctrl and click Help and then About iTunes (hold down the ctrl button the entire time).
A small screen will pop up with some scrolling information, a couple seconds in you'll see 'iPod S/N:'
Write down the list of letters and numbers that comes after that, as that is the serial number of the last iPod that was plugged and synced with iTunes.
You can repeat this process several times to be sure you get all the characters.
You do NOT need to have your iPod plugged into iTunes to acces this information, the only necessary thing is that your iPod has been plugged into and synced with iTunes at least once (which you have, so good). For posterity: if it's never been plugged in, and you don't have the box, you might be out of luck.
