HT1444 How can I restore my Macbook's ability to install downloads? At present I can't download any updates from Adobe, nor can I update my OSX 10.6.
Suddenly I can't install downloads. I get an error message saying the page did not activate.

You will get by email a code which you use in the Mac App Store (in your Applications folder) to download the installer. You will have to have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed to be able to do this. If you have an earlier version of !0.6 than this you can download an update in Software update. Lion installs both itself and a Recovery HD. Booting the latter is how you reinstall Lion or fix things with Disk Utility. So, what you can do is this:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Now, this will completely erase the volume in which Lion is currently installed. When you then reinstall Lion it will be like coming fresh from the factory ready for a new user. I hope this is a working solution for your problem. If it is not, then I would encourage you to create a new topic more relevant to your needs which will solicit others to offer help. Eustace gave you the correct answer here - you cannot restore your Mac to its factory settings without its original DVDs or a retail copy of another Mac OS, such as Snow Leopard.
You can try calling Apple to request a replacement set of DVDs, but I believe that also comes at a cost.
If your Mac is running Lion (OS X 10.7), then I believe the Recovery HD is available to you and can be used to wipe the computer and start fresh.
However, if you are running 10.5 or 10.6, the Recovery HD is not present and you must use a DVD.

Back up the entire system onto an external drive for the last time.
Locate the original install media that came with the Mac.
Boot off the media, start up Disk Utility.
If needed, repartitiion the internal drive to a single partition (i.e., get rid of BootCamp)
Format the internal drive.
If paranoid, do a Security Erase of the drive.
Quit Disk Utility, start the OS X installer
Install the full OS X with all the trimmings onto the internal drive
When the install finishes, shut it down. Do not restart, to allow new owner to customize via Setup Assistant.

Step One - Back up your data:
A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
side.
4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.

Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
4. Install OS X.
5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
6. Shutdown the computer.
B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.

Utilities window appears.
2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.

In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License. -

Install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
That will re download and install the App Store for you which may help.
It's ok to install the combo even though you are already running v10.6.8
Restart your Mac after combo is installed, try downloading apps.
Note... if you have Little Snitch installed that will prevent downloads. If you have anti virus software installed, disable that and turn off the Firewall in System Prefereces > Security. -

Do you have the purchased serial number? What computer operating system?
If you purchased from Adobe direct, you can get download installation files from "My Orders" at the Adobe web site under your Adobe ID and Password (http://www.adobe.com).
