Often, you have to download updated vendor software drivers when you switch operating systems. HP doesn't list a C5500 on their web site, however, here's the link to the OS X 10.6 C5540 software.  If you have one of the other C55xx models, look for the updated driver/scan software on their software/driver download section of HP.Com.

Just installed mac osx snow leopard upgade and connected my printer too, and realized I have lost sound!   Can anyone help?

In case I misunderstood, did you mean that the 10.6.3 version of Snow Leopard was the upgrade?  If so you need to update via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8.  These updates can correct minor system upsets.
And ... did you also repair permissions both before and after you upgraded.   You should do this when you progress via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 too.

The following entry may indicate a failing harddrive, so doing backups and replacing the harddrive may be in order.

A little bit about drive S.M.A.R.T. status:
"The most basic information that SMART provides is the SMART status. It provides only two values: "threshold not exceeded" and "threshold exceeded". Often these are represented as "drive OK" or "drive fail" respectively. A "threshold exceeded" value is intended to indicate that there is a relatively high probability that the drive will not be able to honor its specification in the future: that is, the drive is "about to fail". The predicted failure may be catastrophic or may be something as subtle as the inability to write to certain sectors, or perhaps slower performance than the manufacturer's declared minimum."

  • Quicktime Player states "You can't open the application QuickTime because the Classic environment is no longer supported."  I just installed Mac OSX Snow Leopard.  What do I need to do?

I just installed Mac OSX (10.6.8) and can not get Quick time player to work.  When I go to the Apple site to download a version that will work, it states that Quick Time Player automatically comes with OSX.  What do I need to do to use Quick Time Player with 10.6.8

Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link  even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
(Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".)

  • Cannot install Mac OSX Snow Leopard on Macbook Pro Unibody with a new SSD

Hi, I just bought a SSD (OCZ Vertex LE 120GB) to replace the stock SATA HDD. The problem is that the Mac OSX installation fails. I tried a lot of times with no success. Both clean install from DVD or restoration from a Time Machine backup fails.
The problem doesn't happen if I put the same SSD into a PC to install a Linux or Windows. I've read something saying the problem to be at EFI 1.7, SATA bus and even SATA cable in the Macbook Pro. Can anyone help in this issue?

    IgorOzz wrote:
Hi OrangeMarlin, thanks for answering and trying to help me in this issue. Well, The SDD is well formated by Disk Utility and GUID partition as well. I tried to clone my HDD to the SDD by using the Disk Utility RESTORE option. By doing this I could boot up from SDD but somethings didn't work well (iPhone crashed at every start), Finder sometimes, and other apps...
Maybe the disk utility restore option isn't the best way to do that. I'm gonna try the following steps:
    - Carbon Copy to clone my HDD to SDD;
    - Update SDD FW to the last one (but I need to install it on a Windows machine first);
    - Downgrade EFI FW back to 1.6 (not sure if I'll proceed to this step).
I was thinking about SATA bus and cables because I've read some issues pinpointing to this as the culprit, since the Macbook's SATA wouldn't be able to handle 3Gbps SATA II speeds.
Now, a little question: Why you say to be not recommended to install the new drive internally? What if, after using the SSD or HDD for a while and the system crashes I need to reinstall Mac OSX? I think it's supposed to be installed from the scratch by the DVD installer. Isn't it?
Again, thanks... and waiting more replies...
Do one step at a time, and I highly recommend not "downgrading" the EFI. The unintended consequences might make you throw your MBP out the window.
Yes, use Carbon Copy Clone. Then try to boot from the cloned drive. Hold Option at startup, and it will give you a choice.
If it works, then put it in your MBP. If it doesn't boot, then go to step two, repeat clone, and try again.
My 2010 MBP runs at 3Gbps. I think prior to the 2010 models, Apple had not qualified any drives, other than the ones they put in the MBP's, that could work with 3Gbps drives. You may have one that doesn't.

  • HT203322 Cannot Install Mac OSX Snow Leopard on MacBook 10.5.8 because Mac Hard Drive has Time Machine on It?

I have an old MacBook (2006?) with OS 10.5.8 that I would like to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which I have on DVD. When asked to select what disk I would like to install the upgrade to, my only option is the Mac Hard Drive icon with a big yellow triangle/exclamation point saying I cannot install there because I am running Time Machine on that disk.
I have run searches using "Find" for any vestige of Time Machine left on my computer. I have deleted the icon from my dock. I have tried to run disk utility to delete just the Time Machine but can't target just that. I have rebooted after each of these steps. Nothing changes.
It is Kafka-esque because I need to upgrade my OS so that I can upgrade my browser so I can read the question section of apple.com related to upgrading to Snow Leopard.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Thanks, seventy one. I do have everything backed up everything to an external hard drive, plus the most important stuff also on Dropbox. Given the age of this laptop, and given that I've been the sole owner and almost the sole user, I'm mystified as to why/how Time Machine is on my internal hard drive. I agree with you that it would defeat its purpose to back up files to the computer they're already on! It reminds me of the time a friend of mine put a bucket under his sink because there was a big leak in the pipe that was splashing into the cupboard. When the bucket was full, he took it out from under the sink and poured it down the sink to empty it. Ooops. Using Time Machine to back up files on the same computer it's installed on feels the same to me.
It's interesting because I've found versions of my question posted by many other users, but I can't find an adequate response. Mostly, there are responses that don't directly address the problem, which in turn are rated by the petitioners as 50% or so helpful.
I'm not sure what I'll do beyond searching a little more on the web and sleeping on it. In all seriousness, though, thank you for your help and suggestions. These Apple Help Boards are amazing, in large part owing to people like you who respond to strange plaints like my own.

Thanks for everyones help. It has made a huge difference. I hope this is the end of my issues with this new OS.

Have you run Software Update several times to ensure you've picked up all available updates after upgrading to Snow Leopard?

  • Kernel Panic after installing Mac OSX Lion

I have a late 2009, 15" Macbook Pro that I've upgraded to mountain lion about three weeks ago and when I upgraded the first time I kept getting kernel panics like no tommorrow. I used my flash drive which had lion uploaded to it to "downgrade" to lion in case this happens. I also had mountain lion on the flash drive to so I did a clean install of mountain lion through my flash drive. After that, kernel panics still seem to appear. I got frustrated and called apple support, and lets say that after many hours of testing, installing, and configuring that they just told me to simply go to an apple store, which was a two hour drive from Pine Plains, NY to Danbury, CT only to have them reenstall mountain lion (again) through a network. When I finally got it back and tested it for an hour I thought things would be fine... But lo and behold, another kernel panic appeared. I've taken the liberty to track the programs that I've installed and used during the testing as well as the kernel panic that was reoccuring.

I'll try to figure out how to read this as soon as possible, but until then I need your help to solve this problem.

That panic was not caused by third-party software.
If the panic is recurrent, the possibilities are (1) a damaged OS X installation; (2) a hardware fault, which could be internal or in a wired peripheral device; and (3) an obscure bug in OS X.
You can rule out the first possibility by reinstalling the OS. Probably there will be no change. In that case, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or unless it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at leasttwo independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • How do you install mac osx snow leopard 10.6.3

when installing on my pc it says i need intel what do i do to install the snow leopard 10.6.3

To clarify, Mac, Macintosh, are names for machines made by Apple Inc, as well as the operating system that will run on those machines..  If you don't see on the machine either the Apple logo, which has the icon of an Apple with a leaf out its top, and a crescent bite taken out of it,  or the name MacBook followed by Air, Pro, or nothing it won't install Snow Leopard. iBook, Powerbook, PowerMac are all older models that don't support Snow Leopard. Machines by Compaq, Dell, HP, Toshiba, Gateway do not support any Mac OS. It would help to know what you are running.  If you are running a Compaq, Dell, HP, Toshiba, or Gateway, you can get a new Mac Mini for as little as $600, and used or refurbished one for less.  If you need help finding a used or refurbished Mac, we can give you resources for what will run Snow Leopard.

  • I Have mac osx 10.5.8 and have tried to update to mac osx snow leopard 10.6.3, but I constantly get the install failed message. What could be the problem?

My imac is currently running mac os x 10.5.8. I've tried to install mac osx snow leopard 10.6.3, but have been unsuccesful because the disc fails to install.
    What could be the problem?

You should boot from the Installer DVD by holding down the C key during start up until the Apple logo and spinning cog wheel appears. Allow plenty of time for the installer to appear - it can take several minutes when booting from a disc.
I suggest not doing this unless the Apple recommended method (starting by double-clicking on the
Install Mac OS X icon while booted up normally) fails.
There are several reasons for this:
The Apple method performs a check of the DVD's integrity before starting up from it. This can't be done if you start up directly from the DVD.
The Apple method "phones home" using the current OS's network settings to check for updates to the incompatible items database included on the DVD & writes a lot of pre-install data (the 'Mac OS X Install Data' stuff) to the HD before restarting automatically from the DVD to finish the installation. This may not work as expected if you start up directly from the DVD.
The pre-install data on the HD speeds up the installation process (because running the OS from the HD to build the data is faster than doing that while running from a DVD).
The Apple method makes it possible to "gracefully" cancel the installation before the automatic restart occurs without leaving the existing OS on the HD in a corrupted, "half-installed" state unable to restart the Mac. This sometimes happens if the installation process hangs & one has to force-restart the Mac to recover. As long as this occurs during the "pre-install phase" before the restart, the existing OS should remain untouched & intact.
Also note that the Snow Leopard installer is quite a bit more sophisticated than the previous ones like for Leopard or Tiger. It automatically performs the equivalent of Disk Utility's Verify Disk step before beginning the installation & performs more checks during the installation process (including checking the pre-install data for errors). It is usually not necessary to remove the "Mac OS X Install Data" folder after a failed installation, which may just cause the process to take longer on subsequent attempts, but if nothing else helps it is certainly something worth trying.

    Hello Shelby,
Thank you so much for the details regarding the issue you are experiencing with the Snow Leopard installation.  I recommend following these steps if you are having trouble installing Snow Leopard:
    The installation wasn’t successful
If you were unable to install Mac OS X, try the following:
Disconnect any external devices you don’t need during installation.
Remove any cards from manufacturers other than Apple.
Try installing Mac OS X again.
If you were unable to install Mac OS X again, choose Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the disk on which you want to install, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk. After repairing any problems, quit Disk Utility and then click Continue to try installing again.
If you’re still unable to install Mac OS X, try erasing the disk before installing Mac OS X. Before you erase your disk, try copying your files to an external disk. When you’re ready to erase and reinstall Mac OS X, follow the instructions in the “Restoring your computer to factory settings” section of this document.
I found this on page 7 of the Snow Leopard Installation Instructions:

  • Can i Install Mac OSX Leopard 10.5 /10.6 ?

    Hello guys,
I've bought about 3 weeks ago an iPhone 3G. Since i have my iPhone i like to produce software for the iPhone with the developers kit from apple. But i have one problem. I have an Acer Aspire notebook with:
    4GB memory
    Intel Processor (2,2 GHZ)
    Ati Videocard
    Windows Vista Premium
Can i Install Mac OSX on this notebook ? Maybe with dual boot.
    Best Regards,
    Theodoor de Wit

A slightly different perspective from what others have already posted:
Even assuming there were no licensing/legal problems with this & you could somehow successfully hack the OS & SDK to install & run on your Acer, would you really want to try to use that as a development platform for iPhone apps? It would be like trying to build a sturdy house on an uncertain foundation: you would never know if or when the whole thing might collapse or how to tell if the fault was in what you built or not.
If you want to develop for the iPhone, invest in a Mac. If you are any good at it, judging from the success stories you could quickly & easily make back the cost of that investment & much more. Even if you don't, you will have a very well made & supported computer running what is arguably the most stable & user-friendly OS on the planet.
