If there is no SIM card, insert one from the carrier to whom the device is locked.
As for unlocking the device, only the carrier to whom it is locked can unlock it.

- that is the message i get - checked sim card (it is good) - phone was bought off kijiji - is there a way to find out what carrier it is with if not the one i was told it was - or could it be some other issue - the sim card is making contact to sim card as there are marks developing on it as i insert and re-insert

I have been in contact with the girl i bought it from - a good sign i think. Anyway she is going into the mac store where she got it originally so hopefully something comes of that. I went into Rogers and they had SIM cards from every carrier (same error message) . I just find it strange that the phone doesn't give me any error messages alone except no service and itunes keeps saying the same thing

HT1535 what does the cloud mean for my movies
For my ipad, I have a few movies I want on it. Most of my movies have a cloud in the corner and I do not want them on my ipad. What does the cloud mean?
Go to Settings>iTunes and App Store>Show All>Videos>Off. The movies with the cloud icon are movies in the cloud and they should disappear when you do what I posted.

You did not ruin the phone, you will need a sim card to activate the phone and then connect the phone to itunes and do a restore from back up.

I just got an apple at&t iphone 4 and I have it unlocked. But I want to connect it to t-mobile, so I trimmed my sim card and once the phone was unlocked I inserted the sim and it says no sim, activation error. What can I do to fix this? What is wrong?

It is a balancing act between your photos and everything else you have on the device (apps, mail, messages, etc.), so there is no specific "number" we can give you. Just keep track of your available memory, and make sure you back up your photos regularly so if you reach the maximum memory capacity, you can delete the oldest ones without worrying that they are not saved somewhere else:

Is the phone locked to a carrier? If it is not locked you should be able to activate it with any SIM and not necessarily an active sim.
USING AN IPHONE AS AN IPOD
Restore your phone as new. Place a SIM card into the phone and connect it your computer with iTunes open and follow the activation assistant to activate the iphone. Once the iphone have been activated remove the SIM card and turn on imessage in settings/messages. I upgraded my i phone 3gs from 4.1 to 6.1.6 then the above problem arisedI too am having this problem. However, I suppose I already have the answer. This is simply another example of Apple using their software to limit consumers of certain demographics (namely, people who have the phone but don't pay for service from a carrier). A SIM card is only required for activation because the software administrator says so; and for no other reason. The hardware is there and its perfectly functional otherwise. I shouldn't even need to activate in the first place. Just restore my freaking phone!!
