If your friend had an iPhone and purchased a Samsung, they would need to make sure they turned off iMessage on the device before deactivating. The other choice is to log into their support page and remove the device from their profile. The old device/phone number is still active in the system and that is why your device is still registering it as an iPhone. Your changing the field description for the phone number will not make any difference to Apple.

If you saved a backup in iCloud or iTunes, and then restored that backup to a newer device, you would see the messages ... assuming the newer device uses the same telephone number and cellular carrier as the old one did.

Yes.
On their iOS devices, under Settings>iTunes & App Store, they should use your Apple ID. When they log into iCloud, iMessage and Facetime, they should use their personal Apple IDs.

Okay, so I cracked my iPhone 5 and just got a new 5s in the mail. I'm using the same number, sim and everything. My latest backup was on March 14th, 2013. My boyfriend uses my Apple ID for a year now but we just recently got each others contacts and now we receive each other's messages. Will we lose that setting if I don't back my phone up before switching new phones? Cause I didn't have that setting before when it was last backed up. If I could back it up I would but I don't have nearly enough storage so that's why I'm asking lol. We want to keep the setting like that so we still get each others contacts and everything

You can always resync the Contacts, Notes, and Messages by signing into those services with the same AppleID once you have the new phone set up.

You can still share an iTunes account for purchasing and downloading content. Just create a new Apple ID for iCloud to use for Messaging. If you try to create a new Apple ID for music and content, everything on their phone is tied to the Apple ID used for purchases, and would then require the password for that Apple ID to update. The way I described is easier.

hi, not totally, as when the N8 died, the shop here in France couldn't really do much to help and more like didn't want to do much to help, and transferred what data was available from the sim to the mini sim on the apple. Now looking in depth, Windows Contact is an 'orrible application that is not very easy to handle (Windows Address Book is no longer available for anything above Vista and is all tied into Windows Live and things to do with Hotmail and Messenger..... Gatesy is trying to dominate things again..... WOZ HELP!!)

you can choose to restore from the older phone when you connect your iphone5 by cable and start itunes on the computer and navigate to the iphone and click the restore buttom then you can choose the iphone3's backup

The only method to restore SMS/iMessages is to restore from a backup. The backup contains the SMS/Messages. You cannot selectively restore from the backup, it is all or none.
