HT201300 Why does my 15-inch Macbook Pro identify its self incorrectly?
I recently got a 15-inch Macbook Pro 15-inch and it seems to be identifying its self as a Macbook 13-inch. I'm not quite sure why, but the model identifier is MacBookPro9,1. Looking on the Identification Page - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4132, it seems that it should be identifying its self as MacBookPro9,2. Is this normal that it identifies its self incorrectly? If so, whats the reasoning?
You're right - it should be 9,2 - not 9,1. I'd hope that other 2012 15" MBP users would chime in here to see what they show in system report.
Curious.

Yes it should have 0. I would return it, that means that the battery has already went through 13 full cycles. Perhaps they accidentally resold a returned one as new. -
Why does my mid-2010 Macbook Pro suffer from huge FPS drops whenever I try to play games?
Macbook info: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, nVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB
When I play games on my Macbook Pro, such as League of Legends, Diablo III, World of Warcraft, etc., they operate well with latency of ~80ms usually and fps starting off between 30-60, but after only a couple seconds or minutes my fps drops to 5-15 and the games become unplayable and I must force quit the program. Restarting the computer helps temporarily but then it relapses.
I cleaned out all my downloads, applications, and other deletable files that I could find. I installed and updated Mavericks OS X and the issue persists. Before I installed Mavericks I noticed in Activity Monitor that almost all of my memory was in use while playing a game. After Mavericks the memory is almost all permanently in use, but from what I've read this is what is supposed to happen and instead of looking at memory in use you look at memory pressure, which looks normal.
I was going to upgrade from 4GB RAM (current) to 8GB RAM and see if that helps but idk if that has anything to do with my fps issue or not. Any thoughts?Alright well I'm definitely not running virus scans or doing system backups and then complaining about slow performance.... The only other application running besides whatever game i'm playing is SMC fancontrol to make sure my computer isn't overheating.
In terms of CPU%, games like WoW and LoL take ~50-60% of CPU while active, but activity monitor still reports ~80% idle. For disk activity, i'm not sure whether it uses optical or not, I assume i just uses the hard drive, which is brand new cus it broke down about a month ago and I had to replace it (the fans are brand new as well, so I don't think it could be build up of dust or anything inside because it was opened and cleaned so recently).
I can set all graphics setting to lowest possible and improve my fps to 20, which is still awful, and enabling vertical sync just sends it back down to 15 fps. I don't see why I should have to use lowest graphics settings anyway. It can't be out of date drivers since i have 10.9.1 running. Could the graphics card be the issue? That would suck since I can replace and upgrade RAM but not the graphics card.
I have repaired disk and disk permissions multiple times, virus scans, the whole gambit and nothing seems to help. -
Why does my mid-2010 macbook pro keep restarting? Kernel panic?
Please help,
I work solely on my mid-2010 macbook pro. Lately it has been restarting itself more frequently. I should take it in, but it's hard to be without it for any extended period of time. I was hoping someone could take a look at my crash report and make sense of it?

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution. -
Why does iTunes on my Macbook Pro crash when I plug in my iPod Nano or Classic to sync?
When I plug my iPod Nano or Classic into my MacBook Pro, with iTunes already open, it crashes iTunes. Plus, the device doesn't show up in the device column on the left, but on the upper right of the desktop.
Hi monicaxh1,
Here is an article of troubleshooting for when your iPod does not appear in iTunes:
iPod not appearing in iTunes

The issues you are seeing may be connected, so I would try this troubleshooting first.

Whenever I attempt to update preexisting software apps or install new ones, my mid 2012 MacBook Pro w/ Retina display will shut down and reboot itself. Obviously this has gotten frustrating as several of my existing apps are woefully out of date.
Any suggestions would be most helpful.
PACOMPatThanks for the assistance and sorry for the late reply, I'm overseas doing HA work and don't always have internet access.
I tried utilizing the methods you mentioned and upon doing so I received the following message:
So I followed this set of instructions and when verifying and repairing disk permissions the window stated that the partition was okay.
After logging back in, I attempted to download a software update, sadly the system shut itself down and rebooted and I am still unable to install any updates for my out of date apps. I won't return to the States until June, I may have to wait until then to resolve this issue.
Thank you again for your assistance.

Upon startup my MacBook Pro has a checkerboard pattern running down the right side and along the bottom upon startup. When I turn it on, the screen goes from black to white to blue and then the sign on screen appears with this pattern. Sometimes it does not appear at all. Now it is there everytime I turn on the laptop. I am able to sign on an then it goes to the customary grey textured screen and I have to sign on again. Then I finally get to the the desktop area. Does anyone out there know what is going on? It is my first Mac. It has 10.7.3 OS X, 2.2 GHZ Intel Core i7 processor. Memory- 4GB DDR3. Graphics- AMD Radeon 6750 M and Intel HD 3000 graphics. Below, a downloaded an image. The white stripes actually are baby blue and white checkers. Please help!
I am also getting the same problem, even i am not be able to login. below is the picture. I sent same picture to Apple authorised service centre but they are not responding and even not answarring my phone call.

I haven't used iTunes in awhile to play CDs. Lately though it is not remembering CD info I put into iTunes. I have been using iTunes since the late 90s. I have always been able to edit info for ANY CD I play on iTunes and that computer would remember that info. Lately my MacBook Pro isn't remembering this info. I am able to edit CDs on my G4 Powerbok and it is remembering the info. (The G4 is using 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.2.1 (5). I am using 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.1 (7) on the MBP.) This used to work on the MBP but I haven't dealt with CDs in 6 months or so so I don't know more closley when this behavior changed.)
I've had a go-rounds with Apple Care. Some say I have to import each track for iTunes to remember any edits on that track. I tried that today and that appears to be how things work now. That was not the case up until now. Has iTunes changed how it works?
I realize that iTunes will read file names on the CD if they are burned into the CD. I used Toast for some recent CDs I burned on the MBP awhile ago and voila, those files names are appearing whern I pop the CD in. I cannot edit them so that iTunes remembers them though unless I import whatever track I wanted to edit the info from. OK. That's a step backwards but OK. (I realize I am not editing the info on the CD itself. Once a CD is burned that's impossible, I would only be editing the info that iTunes has about it...) Most of the CDs I have burned do not have track titles as file names.
I know about the CD Info.cidb file. That is where info that I add manually (and info that Gracenote adds, which I also can edit...) gets saved. In the past I could edit ANY CD, regardless of where it came from, and that info would be saved in that file. That is not happening now.
I have moved the CD Info.cidb file to my desktop and edited some info. ITunes is NOT creating a new CD Info.cidb file.
So, has anything changed with iTunes or is there something else going on here? It could be a third-party app or an OS problem.
Thanks for any help.
Cheers,
John L
PS Apple Care is looking into this some more and will call me back next Thursday if not before then. My fingers are crossed that will have some info that is helpful. If I now have to import a track so that I can edit it (and save that info) on a CD, well, so be it but it doesn't seem to be a step forward...
PPS For some reason, Apple put this under the iTunes Store. I would have put it under just iTunes. I forget the page where I asked the title of this question (which has since been edited). It then brought me to this particular forum. I would have moved it if I could...Basically anything not purchased from iTunes that is on my iPhone 6 will not sync over to my MacBook. I have tried to just manually back it up but only the purchased music will sync over to iTunes.

Why does my guest's MacBook Pro crash my DSL modem?
My brother-in-law is visiting and brought his MacBook Pro running system 10.6 4. Whenever he turns on his computer and his Airport looks for my modem, he crashes my modem. I had him walk down the street and turn off his Airport. Then we tried connecting him with ethernet cable and he crashed the modem again. So, it's not specifically Airport but it is something with his computer. AT&T tech support is stumped. Any wizards here?
Take it back to the store since you just bought it, you have 3 months of free hand holding and a 1 year hardware warranty.
3 years for both with paid AppleCare.

My trackpad becomes REALLY unresponsive after I plug in a USB mouse. It seems like the cursor is broken and stuck on a permanent left click or something. I'm unable to select text or do any other sort of action that requires you to hold down the trackpad and drag. Mouse icons don't update as I scroll over different text and links. The trackpad is usually stuck in this unresponsive state until I restart my macbook which is extremely inconvenient if I have to do this after every time I use a USB mouse. Are there any fixes to this?
Melophage,
I don't leave it outside. Usually when I leave it overnight, I do so under the same conditions as when I leave it plugged in, and this morning I only left it for about an hour in my house and it did the same thing.

I actually have a new hard drive I bought a while back and have been meaning to switch it out with the one that's in there now. I'll follow your instruction, then make the switch I had planned on and report back. -

Does the 15 inch Macbook Pro still crash?
I am planning on getting a Macbook but I wanted to wait until they resolved this issue...
Firstly, this is not Apple but a user to user help forum. If there were any issues unresolved we would not know about them. You will have to purchase the product and find out for yourself. Of course this assumes there actually were a problem.

Why didn't Apple update it's 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina line up?
I plan to buy a new MacBook Pro Retina to replace my MacBook Air, I've been waiting for months to see if Apple update it's 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina line up, but on Spring Forward Apple did not update it, does any body know why and when will apple update it's line up? Also I will do a lot of coding and video editing with my new MacBook Pro, which model should I take, or what will suit me the best, the 13inch Retina MacBook Pro or the 15 inch Retina MacBook Pro?
Thank you guys for your answer, and sorry for my bad English.Intel hasn't released the Quad Core Broadwell chips yet, Intel recently announced mid 2015 for these chips.

Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)? I need a laptop for college and the Engineering program suggests a dedicated video card with minimum 1GB of video memory.
I have a Intel HD 4000 in my Mac Mini (late 2012), and it's okay for what I need it.
However:
- there were a few issues with flickering on the video output to external monitors. These were solved through a firmware update that came with OSX 10.8.3 - for the majority of the users. There is apparently still a small group of users that still has issues. You can read long threads about this here:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4472316?start=0&tstart=0
and here
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4490924?start=0&tstart=0
So for most of us (me included) this issue is solved, but it seems that certain displays / monitors don't work well with the intel HD4000, don't know if there is a pattern or a list of monitor models...
- there was an issue with the color calibration on the HDMI output. No matter how much you tried to calibrate, the results remained unsatisfying. All light colors were crushed to white, wrong contrast, ...
You can read about this here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1482487
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4480354?start=0&tstart=0
The same firmware update improved this a little, good enough for me, but I can imagine it's not good enough if you do graphic work and need reliable colors from your monitor. On HDMI output, the thunderbolt/MDP output is fine. So it's mainly a dual monitor setup issue.
If it's for graphic work, I'd go for a Mac Book Pro with dedicated GPU !
