HT2801 Will USB Super Drive work on imac?
The CD/DVD drive on my imac isn't working. I keep getting error code. I've researched error, doesn't seem to be a fix for it. Will I be able to use external Apple USB Superdrive?
No, the Apple external superdrive only works on the MBair, Mac Mini and the new retina.
You can however buy about any usb external drive from another vendor and it should work.

The answer is no unless you are willing to modify a system file. See this article. Read the entire thing and the comments before deciding if it is the route for you.
If it were me I'd go with Shootist's advice and get another brand--for the reasons he stated.
I have a SuperDrive that I use with my 2012 MBA but with my late-2012 27" iMac, which does not have an internal CD/DVD drive and therefore will work with the SuperDrive, I use a 3rd party that is both faster and cheaper than the SuperDrive. -
I have an older iMac 5,1 and the disc drive no longer works. I was hoping that I could the Apple USB super drive as a replacement, but the info on the super drive page says compatible with iMac 2012 or later. Does anyone know why it would not work for me?

If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
Hopefully this helps.

HT2801 USB Super drive not working
I have removed the optical drive from my 2008 (late) macbook and added an SSD to run along side the HDD and increased the RAM. I have a super drive to read CD/DVD's but i can not get this to operate?
I believe that the Apple USB Super Drive only works with late model Macs that didn't come with an optical drive. Third party usb drives will work ok though.

My USB Super Drive will not Play Red Box DVDs, Why?
Can anyone explain why my USB super drive will not play RedBox DVDs?
What Mac are you using with the USB SuperDrive?
Is this USB SuperDrive a third party drive or Apple's USB SuperDrive?
If this optical drive is Apple's own external USB SuperDrive, this only works with newer Macs that have no built-in optical drive any longer and WILL NOT work with older Macs that came with built-in optical drives.
Is the Red Box DVD a standard DVD or Blu-Ray DVD disc? -
Hello I just bought the USB super drive for the mac book pro and for some reason when I put the disc in and I download the content and for some reason when I put the aplication just a bunch of random words come out,not the content the disc brings.
Ok, I hope I'm not steering you in the wrong direction, but I've just found this on the support site for the software.

I am looking at upgrading from my Macbook Pro to the Macbook Air and am curious if the usb super drive will play Blue Ray discs?

There are 3rd party options. One possible source is OWC: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/ -
My USB super drive is not reading DVD
when i connect my usb super drive is not reading DVD
External SuperDrive DVD player fix - RESOLVED!
This solution worked for my Superdrive, which I had installed in a USB external case, so now it can play movies using Apples DVD Player App, but additional steps may be needed, as I outline below. I had removed the SuperDrive from my mid-2009 Macbook Pro 15" 2.53 ghz to install a second hard drive with Other World Computing's "Data Doubler" adapter, and mounted the SuperDrive in an OWC Value Line SuperSlim external case.
I don't know if the first two steps below are necessary, but I had done them first, because others suggested them as fixes before I found the solution in the 3rd step.
1) I installed Apple's SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0, which is on Apple's support site at http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201953
2) Then I applied a fix on this page, http://www.hardturm.ch/luz/2011/10/how-to-make-the-macbook-air-superdrive-work-w ith-any-mac/comment-page-12/#comment-106449, using Text Wrangler to edit the preference file at /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist by adding code mbasd=1 between the two string values. However, that still did not resolve the problem. I left the preference file with the code “mbasd=1″ included, as outlined on that site.
3) Then, I used the fix at http://macriot.com/mcrt/?p=2294 which requires modification of some code embedded into OS X’s DVDPlayback framework; essentially replacing the words “internal” with “external”
Now my external Superdrive plays movies using DVD Player. -

How to use usb super drive at mcbook pro with retina
I had just bought a mcbookpro with retina on-line. I bought a USB super drive as well. I don't know how what button i'll be using to operate the usb super drive. Can anyone help?
If you've a CD with Microsoft Office on it, all you need to do is double-click the installer program on the CD. If you don't see the CD mounted on your Desktop, go to Finder>Preferences>General, and tick the box that says "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" under "Show these items on the desktop".
After you've finished installing Office, simply drag the disc to the Trash and it will eject (I don't have a Retina display model, so I'm not sure if there's an optical disc eject button next to the F12 key or nor - if there is, you can use that as well).
Hope this helps.

I have a new MacBook Air with a USB super drive. I put in a DVD and I get nothing. No Icon on the desk top, no help from DVD player. How do I get it to play and how to eject it now that it's in?
There's a defect. The computer is in warranty so take it in for repair.

Just purchased a USB Super Drive but unsure how to use it - o instructions provided apart from how to eject a cd. Each time I put in a cd it just ejects it again. Can anyone help.
USB is rarely bootable under Mac OS X and PowerPC Macs. Get a Firewire Superdrive from http://www.macsales.com/ if your intent is to boot the machine. PPC, which is PowerPC, indicates the Mac predates 2006.
