Almost certainly, no. While there are a few non-DRM locked books available in the iBook store, most are DRM locked to Apple's own iBook app and cannot be transferred to any other ereader app or device.

You can't convert an ibook into a PDF. Some publishers (e.g. O'Reilly) aren't using digital rights management on their ibooks, so you may be able to open them in other programs e.g Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com) and I believe Adobe Digial Editions may be able to open non-DRM ibooks. But those that have DRM you will only be able to open in the iBooks app on an iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

If the book doesn't use DRM protection, then yes it's possible, through iTunes to do this. If its protected, then no. Apple's DRM scheme is unique.

There is nothing to stop from buying the apps in advance, but there is no need to - most take less than a minute or two to download. You probably need to decide whether you are going to upgrade to 4.2 (assuming that its not pre-installed with it), as some apps have it as a pre-requisite - an apps requirements should be on the left hand side of its description in iTunes

The problem with this that it isn't a one-off payment. You have to give a credit card number, and then the monthly subscription is taken automatically until you cancel it. The credit card number would be the one in iTunes, so you couldn't use yours but then have theirs used to purchase songs or movies. Probably the only way would be for you to just give them the money, which isn't the nicest way of giving a gift.
