HT4085 Side switch glitch

It seems odd that no mention was made of the red dot - whether that means muted or not,  or locked rotation or not locked rotation.  Indeed, the box itself, in which the comment or question was to be put, could not be scrolled until after it was submitted.

Red dot=Muted or Locked
It depends on the "Use Side Switch To" settings.

How can I use both rotate screen orientation and un-mute simultaneously?  Why do I have to choose one or the other???

If you are asking if you have the screen rotation working and have system sounds at the same time, you can absolutely have both at the same time. It would not make sense if you couldn't up have both at the same time.
The kb article that you must have been reading when you posted your question explains in great detail how you can have both at the same time, but I will try to explain it in a boilerplate that I have posted here many times in the past.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 8. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.

  • HT4085 For some reason the "use side switch to" feature is not appearing on my iPad my current version is 9A405. What can I do to bring it back?

The title says it all. I went into settings>general to change the side switch from muting to locking rotation but there was no such feature yet I used to have it before.

  • HT4085 The side switch is locking the display.

The side switch is not displaying the speaker icon and does not do volume up or down.  Holding it does do the power off.   Worked as expected lazy night.  I powered down.  This morning I powered up and was watching a video, when to adjust the volume and the screen locked.   Unlocked the screen with the pin and resumed whee I has in the video.  Tried to adjust the volume and same behavior, locked the screen.
Other means of controlling the volume are working.

My mistake....  All is working.  I was not hitting the volume switch, But the sleep/wake button !   I must have still been half asleep !!

  • HT4085 can't ghet sound on i pad.  when pushing side button icon appears showing sound is on.  Must be something else that needs to be set differently.  Side switch is set to mute.  Any one experience this and have a solution

??? can't get sound to work.  Side volume buttons show sound is on.  Side switch is set to mute.  No sound.  Apparently something needs to be changed to enable sound.  Anyone experience this and have a solution
    Thanks

There are two different sound levels, one is the normal sound level and the other one is sound affects, turn the volume up on buttens and view the multitakting bar and then swipe to the left the show the sound volume, in settings you can change which one is set to buttens also.
    :) hope this helps

  • HT4085 Why isn't "hold" an option for the side switch on the iPad?

Why isn't "hold" an option for the side switch on the iPad?
I'd like to be able to let my 3 year old watch videos on the iPad, but young kids want to touch the screen.  I need a method to disable the touch screen.  Seems simple, why isn't this an option?
Is there a way to write an app that allows the side switch to act as a "hold" switch?

The obvious solution is to put the iPad screen out of his reach.  Now that's innovative!

  • HT4085 How to not use side switch or mute

How do you not use lock rotation or mute at the same time, my iPad only lets me do one at a time, and I don't want mute but I want my iPad to be able to rotate, is there a setting to get rid of both? I have IPad with retina display (newest)

The function that isn't being controlled by the side switch above the volume control is instead controlled via the left-hand end of the taskbar - so if the switch on the side of the iPad is controlling rotation lock, then double-click the home button to open the taskbar at the bottom of the iPad's screen, swipe that to the right, and the icon at the left-hand end of that will be for notification mute.
If you want both 'off', then make sure that the switch on the side is off, and the icon at the elft-hand end of the taskbar is 'off'.

  • HT4085 iPad4 ( ios6) has defective "use side switch"

The "Use side switch" on my iPad4 with IOS 6.1.3 enables one function but locks the other, so if I want to enable auto rotation, all my apps are locked on mute.  Is this a defect?

The switch on the side of the iPad controls either rotation lock or notification mute, depending upon what you've got it set to it in Settings. The other function is controlled by the left-hand end of the iPad's taskbar : double-click the home button to open the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and swipe that to the left.
If it's the mute icon there (i.e. the side switch is controlling rotation) then does it have a line through it ? If it does then tap the icon to turn off mute.
If its the rotation icon (i.e. the side switch is controlling mute) then if it has a padlock in the middle of the icon then tap the icon and rotation lock should be turned off.

  • My iPad2 side switch is acting up, it will only allow me to have either sound or rotate. If I unmute the rotate won't work, if I mute the rotate works. How can I get the iPad to unmute and rotate? I have restored, downloaded updates and rebooted.

You should be able to control the function that the side switch isn't controlling via the left-hand end of the taskbar : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085 - is the icon that appears there (notification mute or rotation lock) indicating that that function is 'off' ?

  • HT5622 iPad 3 and my sound has stopped from speakers, but can get from headphones.  It's not the side switch and the volume is max in all areas.  Anyone got any ideas, what problem is and how to fix it thanks

    Hi,
My iPad has just stopped working with sound from the speakers, it works fine with the headphones in.  The soft mute button is not made and the volume is at max.
Any ideas what problem is and how to sort.  Thanks

System sounds can be muted from the software switch in the task bar as well as from the side switch depending on how you have it set up. This my boilerplate resonse for sound issues.
    1. If you have no sound at all, even in the Music App, try rebooting the iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
    2. If you lost sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

    3. If you still have no sound at all - except when using headphones ....try cleaning the dock connector opening of the iPad with a soft brush and just a little bit of rubbing alcohol.

I have an iPad 1st generation that no longer has working volume buttons but every once in a while the sound turns on.  So I know the speakers still work.  I have tried resetting all settings and made sure that my side switch was auto lock not auto mute. I have tried the mystical swiping upward on the screen with 4 fingers to get some special sound menu (which I never succeeded in getting).  My headphone jack doesn't work all the time either so some times my kids can hear their games and sometimes they can't.  I am super frustrated at this point.  So any suggestions would be great.  Am I missing something basic or do we just have a soundless iPad now?

  • Choose what the side switch does

I have ipad air and i can choose between making the side switch Mute the device or lock the rotation. I also have an iphone 4 and i would like to be able to do the same. can i do that? the software is the same or ios 7.1
My actual problem is that on my iphone both the home button and the power button are broken and i figgure out that on the ipad i can turn the screen on by using the side swich because it's on lock rotation. If I can change what the side switch dose on the iphone it would save my phone! haha!
So please anyone if you know anything, any suggestions are appreciateted

There's no side switch on iPhone, except volume and mute and you can't reconfigure the mute or volume switches to do anything other than their intended purpose.  With one exception.  You can use the volume switch as a shutter release to take pictures.

  • IPad Mini Side-Switch Lock Always-Active Bug

    Hi,
I have an iPad mini that behaved perfectly until around the time I upgraded to 7.0.6, when it starting making me choose between Mute or Landscape mode.
If my iPad side switch is set to control the Mute option in settings, when I try to play audio the iPad is always silent. If I use the volume rocker the indicator shows the volume changeable from minimum to maximum, but no sound occurs when playing audio of any kind.
I can swap the side switch lock between active and disabled, and the mute indicator comes and goes, but still no audio in either side switch state.
If I set the side switch in Settings to control the Lock Rotation instead and restart the iPad, I don't have any problems with audio, but my iPad mini becomes locked in landscape mode.
If I swap the side switch lock between active and disabled, the locked and unlocked orientation icons appear, but the screen stays locked in landscape.
I don't want to reset the iPad as I have apps on there that are since discontinued, so are there any other options/fixes available? Or Is anyone else experiencing this bug?

I didn't say a restore, which reloads a fresh copy of iOS. I said a reset which does not remove any data or apps. It's equivalent to power cycling your iPad - a reboot.
That said, you should always download copies of your apps to a computer and keep them for just the situation you described.

  • My ipad 2 won't rotate. i tried reseting it severally my "Use Side Switch" is set to Mute and there is no rotation lock sign close to the battery sign in the upper right side

my ipad 2 won't rotate. i tried reseting it severally my "Use Side Switch" is set to Mute and there is no rotation lock sign close to the battery sign in the upper right side

The software switch is in the task bar at the bottom. Double tap the home button and swipe to the right in the bottom of the screen. The speaker icon on the left would be where the software switch would be.
If you don't see a lock icon in the upper right corner, the screen isn't locked, reboot your iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
