Have a new Iphone and trying to set up. Got to the page choose back up and both old phone and ipad are showing but cant select either and its just sitting there. what should i be doing?
You can transfer the purchases you made on your old iPhone 3 by plugging it in to iTunes and doing File > Devices > Transfer Purchases from your IPhone to the iTunes on your computer. This will get music you purchased in iTunes, apps, etc. (e.g., movies).
But for the rest you would need to restore a backup of your newly deceased computer.

Can anyone help?If the backup you're trying to restore from is encrypted, & you don't know the encrypted passcode, the backup will be unusable & you will not be able to recover any data from it. Encrypting an iPhone backup is not done automatically. You, or someone, had to elect to encrypt it to begin with, and no, there is no default passcode.
Did you have an Exchange account on your iPhone 4? It is common for Corp. Exchange accounts to require an iPhone backup be encrypted. If you did, you might try your Exchange password. -
Just bought new iPad trying to transfer everything I have on the old one over to the new is there anyway I can do this without losing stuff
In most countries, music and apps can be downloaded for free in the iTunes/App stores if you log into the new iPad using the Apple ID with which you used to purchase them. The same goes for most films. You can also sync the old iPad with a computer and then sync the new one with the same computer, and restore it from the backup you made of the old iPad.
If you have notes and emails on the old iPad, go into 'System Preferences' and make sure they are saved into the iCloud. You can then retrieve them from the cloud by logging in to the same email/iTunes accounts on the new iPad. -

New Macbook and unable to transfer info from old Mackbook pro
I got a new Macbook pro and I'm have been unable to transfer any information from the "old" macbook pro to the new one.
I tried the migration assistant via firewire took several hours to finish later the new computer restart and brought me agin to the setup page asking me to migrate again, I did it twice and it kept happening.
Later I tried to use a backup from the time machine, after some time the new computer erased all the backups from the time machine.
What can i do? Which files can you move? Do I have to reinstall everything?Are you using a cable like this one or an adapter like this? If you're using the latter then many people have reported troubles, however the former works quite well.
You can also use Time Machine to restore, so if your old machine is hooked up to an external HD setup for TM use that.
I'd recommend you look over Pondini's overview on Setup Assistant Tips.

Assuming that you've been syncing your iPhone 3 to your computer/iTunes, plug it in one last time and let it backup. Then plug in your 4S, and when 'setting up phone' choose the latest backup.

Trying to transfer Apps from old phone to new.
I need to transfer Apps from my iPhone3 to the computer, so I can then get them from the computer to my new iPhone4, however when I try to "transfer purchases from phone to computer" I get a message saying they couldn't be transferred to my library because I am not authorised for them on this computer, even though I purchased all the Apps directly to my iPhone3. Can someone help? Cheers.
This has nothing to do with purchasing/downloading apps direct with the iPhone. This has everything to do with your computer not being authorized with the same iTunes account with iTunes that was used to purchase/download the apps with your iPhone, or there is a problem with this on your computer if already authorized with the same iTunes account with iTunes along with iTunes on your computer being logged in with the same account before doing the transfer.

When i try to sync my Iphone on my macbook pro I am told that I will lose any apps previously purchased while I was using a since crashed pc harddrive. I have authorized my macbook as a second computer but am not able to sync. Is there a way I can transfer my apps from my phone onto the macbook and then sync with my family members phones on the same account?
On the MacBook launch iTunes.

Trying to transfer soungs from old ipod to new ipod, received error from
iTunes saying that "Some of the purchase items on ipod couldn't be transfer to itunes library because you're not authorized to play them on this computer" . That being said the computer is authorized already. When I go to authorize the computer I get "This computer is already authorized". Any suggestions?
This is referring to songs purchased from the iTunes Store. It's saying that some of the songs were purchased using a different account than your account. That's why you are not authorized to play those songs.

I have a 3G iphone. I just tried to download the new itunes and lost all my itunes I had. I tried to transfer them from my computer but can't. How can I and what do I do to get the ones I bought before and now have lost.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod/iphone/ipad: File>Transfer Purchases
