IPod says operating 4.3.5 (8L1) model MC540LL plus my daughters iPad 2 doesn't show the software update option either. My other daughter also has iPad 2 and I was able to update hers last night

The two without the "software update" are probably running a version of iOS prior to 5.
To upgrade them they will need to be connected to computer with the USB cable and upgraded using iTunes.

I think you answered your own question. If I read what your wrote correctly, you sent yourself a message to your phone number and you are wondering why it was not recieved on your iPad? If that is what you wrote, the reason is your iPad is not a cell phone and messages sent to a cell number, will not be received on your iPad. To send a message from your iPhone to your iPad using iMessage, you need to send the message to the email address you specified when you set up iMessage on your iPad.

I have been to several tech support sites and have checked all of the settings for my Iphone 4, which appear to be on the correct "on" position HOWEVER when syncing with Icloud/Itunes via my Windows PC (windows 7) the Photo Stream comes up short 4 or 5 photos. WOW! That font is difficult to read. But, see if this support document helps you http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3989. Photos stream is based on date and photos more than 30 days old are removed. Photostream is designed as a temporary storage to allow you to download the photos to the computer.

Any Apps purchased with your Apple ID can be downloaded again, no charge. Tap Apps icon, tap purchases. This should pull up App Store and past purchases. Apps made on another ID must be downloaded with that ID ( my sons and I share a library on the computer! but have separate IDs.

The problem is I can only update the software on one of the three iPhones – the primary phone I used to setup the iTunes acct. What is the best solution to manage these devices for software updates, apps? This is probably a common problem with families wanting to share apps and music without realizing the issues created by this approach. As it stands today... the first (primary) iPhone associated with the iTune acct has been updated with the latest software version 5.1.1 and sync'd up with all the apps, music, etc from the one iTune acct, while the other two iPhones are still running on the original software version 4.0.2 and are experiencing problems now. I was advised by AT&T back in January that it would be necessary to setup separate iTunes accts for the second and third iPhones in order to receive system updates. The problem would be how to keep all the apps, etc from being deleted off the second and third phones that were originally loaded from the one iTunes acct. Since this AT&T advice was prior to iCloud coming out, would iCloud be a better solution or at least part of the solution? I really don't yet understand how iCloud works. its 1000s of songs . Originally I used the time machine as a networked drive but it can cause the songs to pause so I'm thinking it would be better to have the songs on the internal imac drive

Do you mean on your Time Machine backup drive? Or are you actually accessing the backup? In either case you shouldn't be doing that. If you haven't space on your HDD to store the iTunes Library, then at least put it on another external drive.
Since you did not provide any information about what's actually "on my time machine," here's what you would do. The entire iTunes folder should be stored in the /Home/Music/ folder. Within that folder you would have three folders: imm Media, iTunes, and iTunes Playlists.

Plug in your ipod and navigate to it in itunes, then select the 'Podcast' tab from along the top.
The first line where it says 'Automatically include' then two drop down boxes saying 'all unplayed' and 'all episodes' need changing.
Change the drop down box that says 'all episodes' so that it reads 'selected episodes'
You should then be able to go through your collection below and check only the podcasts you want to sync.
You can do this show by show or if you clickt the show itself in this window, on a podcast by podcast basis.
You can use these to drop down boxes to set all kinds of rules for syncing your podcasts, such as
syncing all the latest podcasts, or just all of them or even the last 5 recent podcasts.
I tend to go for 'Automatically include [all unplayed] of [selected episodes]
Then just choose which podcasts I want to listen too,

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Select one and hit the Space bar to view it in QuickLook. Use the forward arrow keys to move from file to file. If the file can't be viewed in the QuickLook mode then the file is damaged and probably can't be copied or moved.
You could try a photo file recovery application like MediaRECOVER which can scan the memory card and tell you what files, if any, can be recovered before you have to purchase it.

I used to have task or shortcuts show up when I would right click on the FF Icon on the task bar. After installing 4.0 they are all gone. How do I get these back? or restore them to what they were?

Win 7 task bar has a Fire Fox Icon. Before installing FF 4.0 I could right click on the Icon and it would show short cuts to various sights, which when clicked on would open that sight in FF.
They are all gone now. What happened? Is there a way to get these back?
