I've already set up my new MacBook Pro, I want to migrate all my stuff from my old MacBook OS X 10.6.4. Will the migration wipe out the settings in the new computer?

Of course not. Migration Assistant will create a new user with the transferred files and settings, so your MacBook Pro won't get messed > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
You may want to merge both users > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

You should use the Setup Assistant when it appears after you first turn on your new computer. But if that's not convenient then use Migration Assistant after you've setup the new computer.

Thanks -- I would like to try this. I do not know how to reach hard drive from old mac to new. Can you help me with this?
There are two ways - you can boot your old Mac in Target Mode (reboot your Mac, and as soon as you hear the startup chime hold down the T key on the keyboard until you see the yellow/orange Firewire logo on screen).  You can then use a FireWire cable to connect your new mac to your old one.  The old Mac hard drive will appear on your new Mac as if it is an external hard drive.
Details on Target Disk Mode:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
If you don't have a firewire cable but you do have a home network (i.e. both computers can access the Internet at the same time), you can share the hard drive on your old Mac and then connect to it on your new Mac.
Good article on sharing your hard drive:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1549
Finally, if the above doesn't thrill you, you can hook an external drive to your old Mac, copy the mail folder over to it, then connect the external drive to your new Mac and copy it over.  It's two steps, but if you don't have a firewire cable and aren't comfortable with sharing over a network it will work just as well - you just have to wait for the mail folder to copy twice instead of once.

i have a brand new macbook pro that i was doing a data transfer via firewire from an old macbook, it got stopped/cable pulled out, now have spinning wheel of death that wont stop, how do i reboot/stop the wheel of death and start again? (this time il use time machine transfer)

Just power off the machine(s). Shut them down. Migration Assistant gets 'stuck' sometimes - best way to migrate really isn't over Firewire, though it will certainly work, but with both machines hardwired via Ethernet to the same router. You can use a TM backup, too, of course, provided that it's recent. Which is the best? Your choice. I've done it both ways and have a preference for MA, but TM restore can be a bit faster and less quarrelsome.

  • I have just bought a MacBook Pro and want to transfer my iTunes library from my old laptop to mac.  I've prepped and copied the library to an external hard drive then loaded it onto my mac however none of the music or apps are appearing.

I've moved my library to my Mac but none of my apps and only some purchased music/books appear in itunes.  I'm sure I'm missing something but I'm new to Mac's so not sure what! Any help appreciated

Tunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.

  • I set up my new computer using the apple ID i always use, and then later migrated all my files from my old mac book to the same new one, but under a different user (same ID). how do i consolidate the two users on my new mac book?

i set up my new computer using the apple ID i always use, and then later migrated all my files from my old mac book to the same new one, but under a different user (same apple ID). how do i consolidate the two users on my new mac book?

Well if you use the Finder Go menu to Computer, a window opens up double click on your boot drive and then on Users folder, open the other user folder and open Public and drop your files into DropBox
When you do this it will copy them and change the permissions and user assigned to it, so log into the other user and place them into your respective normal folders.
Once you have all your files over and don't need the old user, use System Preferences > Accounts to delete it if you wish, however it's good two Admin accounts on the machine in case something bad happens in the other. Some people for security reasons on use a Standard account for most uses and a emergency Admin account.
One can still do most Admin things in Standard user.

  • After creating a new playlist in iTunes, how can I add my entire music library --at once-- to the new playlist. I want to download all my music from Icloud at once on my Macpro

After creating a new playlist in iTunes, how can I add my entire music library --at once-- to the new playlist. I want to download all my music from Icloud at once on my Macpro

You have two separate questions here...
To get all your music into one playlist, select Music in the sidebar and click the Songs view at the top. Then, highlight all the songs and drag them into your playlist.
I don't know if it's possible to download all Purchased content (or do you mean iTunes Match content?) at once; try a few Google searches.

I assume that you don't have the installation discs, so:
    1. Reboot
    2. Hold command + s key down after you hear the chime.
    3. When you get a text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
    (Type these commands very carefully)
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
    4. You will go through the setup process again, create a new admin account, login to it and then change your existing account password or whatever else you need to do. You can delete the account you made in this process, or not.

  • How do i move all my music from my old Macbook Pro laptop to new iMac desk top?

I have a 2009 macbook pro and want to move all my music over to my new iMac desk top...how do i do this?
    thx

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168

  • I have just migrated all my files from my old Mac to my new Mac.

I have just migrated all my files from my old Mac to my new Mac. The CS2 apps are asking for my serial number which I have. But before I follow through on this will this procedure deactivate my old Mac's CS2 apps? I'd like to keep the old Mac active until I'm confident that there will be no glitches with software operation on my new Mac. In other words a shakedown cruise of app integrity on the new Mac. Please advise.

never migrate adobe files.  properly install them using the installation files.
for cs2, don't use your installation files.  use Error: Activation Server Unavailable | CS2, Acrobat 7, Audition 3
and you don't need to deactivate your currentle working cs2 programs.

I want to send my itunes library from my old macbook (start up disk nearly full) to my new iMac.   Then delete my itunes library from my old macbook.  Is Homesharing my best choice for this?
What I don't want to happen is once I delete my itunes library from my old Macbook that the iMac itunes library to delete itself because I am using Homesharing.  Does homesharing sync and make that happen?

After confirming that all your stuff is on the drive, delete the photos you have copied. You will need to empty the iPhototrash to free up the space.
