HT5037 To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.

I opened iphoto and got an error "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared."  What do I do?  My photos wont open for anything.  I have the latest version if iphoto.

1 - NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it does not work and creates an incredibable mess
at this point you need to go back to your backup from before you added the clipped image to it
2 - exactly how did you "add" the clipped pic to your library (Skitch share to iPhoto ?)
3 - we can not see your or your compter so details are critical - what version of iPhoto do you have? Of the OS?

Is this library one that you've been using since you bought the MBP?  If so and you're running iPhoto 9 then apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • HT5037 I keep getting this message despite already upgrading on my new Mac.To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.

    I just purchased a new Mac OS x 10.9.1.
I'm trying to move over files from Passport which was my backup for my old Mac.   Not all my photos transported over.  I'm missing about 3 years worth.   I followed the instructions for the iphoto 11 upgrader for the library,  download, utility etc.  But no go.
Now Iphoto -- the app -- wont open at all without thisk pop up:
To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.

    But
Then you do not have an iPhoto library - it is not possible to move "some" of an iPhoto library - it is a single entity and must be treates as such
Exactly how step by step did you do this?
I was able to move virtually all my photos and "events" prior to 2010.
I did create a copy of my old iPhoto library from the Passport drive on the desktop but that to gives me the "to open..."message when I tried to open it.
So run the library upgrader (applications folder ==> utilities) against tha tlibrary and then open it using iPhoto 9.5.x

  • HT5037 when I click on iPhoto(9.5.1)  i get "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared." but i downloaded the up-grader, used it and it tells me the library can open with the current version... what should i do now?

When I click on iPhoto(9.5.1)  i get "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared." but i downloaded the up-grader, used it and it tells me the library can open with the current version... Then when I click on the iphoto again i get the same message "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared."'
    What should I do?

The upgraded is only necessary for libraries created with iPhoto '07 or eearlier.  Just double click the library to open it in iPhoto, and let it upgrade, if it has been created by a newr version.

  • Can't open iPhoto "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple." Doesn't work...

I've tried to open my iPhoto and a message box opens up and reads "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple." I update this and this message continues to pop up. I've even tried to rebuild it, but no matter what I do the same message appears and iPhoto still wpn't open. Can somebody please help me?!

i'm having the same problem with my iMac (Mac OS X 10.7.5) . i haven't really made any updates to it and yesterday when i tried to access the iPhoto library of my MBP (from my iMac) is when problems started. The iPhoto on the iMac initially said I need to install the recent version of the iPhoto. Since I can't find a 9.0 download, I went to buy the iPhoto on the App store.
When I tried to install iPhoto (version 9.4.3) to the iMac, I got this message:
The iPhoto Library Upgrader is a tool that prepares libraries from iPhoto 5 or earlier, so you can upgrade them with the current version of iPhoto. You can download the tool here.
Note: If your library is from iPhoto 6 or later, this tool is not required."
I then installed the iPhone Library Upgrader, but I got the same prompt:
'You can't open your current photo library using this version of the iPhoto. You have made changes to your library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
I guess this takes me back to square one? I am inclined to buy the iLife on eBay with the iPhoto 9.0 version, but needed to know if this is the case before I unfortunately bite the bullet.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I just downloaded Ilife 9 and now my Iphoto doesn't open. The error message says: You cannot open your library using this version. Quit and use the older version. What can I do?

iLife '09 is not available as a download - it is only available as a purchase
iLife '11 is available as a DVD purchase and the compoments of it are available from the App Store (iPhoto '11 (version 9.1.5), etc)
Exactly what did you do? And exactly what does the error message say?
On the surface it appears that you are attemptying to open a new library with an older version (iPhoto '09 can not open an iPhoto '11 library for example)

This is a message you got?
If so, as your post isn't clear, it may be a bogus message caused by a corrupt database.

    If that fails:
    Option 2

  • Error mssg: can't open library with this version of iphoto

Help please... I have iphoto 09 but I can't open anything. For some reason, I have multiple copies of the library on my desktop. The message says I made changes and can't open with this version. One of the library folders says Library6.iphoto, which makes no sense.
Here is what I have done recently to maybe cause this?
    - I did drag one library out of the trash yesterday (due to paranoia from a previous case of deleting ALL my photos).
-I also deleted photos from my photobooth from within Finder in the "today" section.
I hope this make sense, I am pretty much a newbie still.
Anyway, I can't open any photos. I don't know why, or what's with all the multiples.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    painterchic
I still have an icon on my desktop that says Library6.itphoto and when I click on it, it opens my iphoto proogram,
This is an element that should be inside an iPhoto Library. I wonder if it belongs inside this one:
When I use the alt/option key and choose library, there is a third library that will not open, with the message saying "cannot open, changes have been made, and to use a newer version".
If not, you can find the location of this Library easily: When you use the alt key to choose Libraries the location of the Library is given to you:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You could try rebuild that Library by downloading iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

  • Cannot open the iphoto library with present version of iphoto

I had a hard drivre crash and had to start it all over from my Time capsule. Everything went OK, but iphoto does not start, it seems that it does not find the library.
I have reinstalled iphoto 11 and upgraded to the latets version 9.5. The message I get now is that I cannot open my library with this version of iphoto. It says that I have changed my library with a later versiob of iphoto (is there a later version - nothing I can upgrade to as far as I understand). I am asked to quit and use the latest version of iphoto (which I am using).
How do i get this right?

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:

You cant open the libery with this version of Iphotos

How do I do sow my photos dont desepire?
How do I find the newer version?
    thank you for help
( sorry teknology is not my strong side)

    Back up your iPhoto library,
Not your photos - your library - this simpy involves making a copy of it in case of problems - Is does not involve using iPhoto in any way
However if you do not allways have a current backujp you will lose all of yoru photos and all other files sooners or later - things fail - if you do not you seriously need to pruchase an external drive formatted Mac OS extended tha is roughtly 2 1/2 times the size of your main drive and start running Time Machine or other backup software immediately if your photots have any value at all to you

LarryHN is correct. The only way this message occurs is if the iPhoto Library database is upgraded to a newer version.
You could try holding SHIFT-OPT-COMMAND when launching iPhoto from the dock and checking only "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" and hope it restores the previous database prior to the upgrade.
If that doesn't work, you can install iPhoto '11 on your iPhoto '09 computer. If I understood the iPhoto '11 Mac App License agreeement correctly, you can install it on any personal, non-commerical computer you own running 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7.

Is your Apple Intel-based, poppelmacbook?  If not, you should consider treating yourself to a new Mac. Last December I gave up my old because it just could not update...anything because it was not Intel-based.  Updating everything on this OS to 10.9 has been confusing for me, but I just could not work with that old Mac because the updates were too smart? for my 10.6.  It is upstairs now...for visiting family:  games, garage band, etc.--things I never did use.  Apple refurbished and purchase the extended warranty.  Apple loyalist since late 1980's.
