HTC Hero with Android 2.1 fails to meet minimum requirements

System requirements states android 2.0+ needed. My Orange HTC Hero is upgraded to 2.1-update1
Firefox installs but won't run;
"This device does not meet the minimum system requirments for Firefox"

For full system requirements, and an experimental version for phones with ARMv6 processors like the Hero, see: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android

On HTC Hero with Android 2.1 Fennec Alpha does not start.

Fennec Alpha is not compatible with ARMv5 or ARMv6 processors like the one in the HTC Hero, G1, Legend, Magic, Wildfire, Droid Eris, or Samsung Moment.
We have experimental nightly builds with support for these processors. You can download the ARMv5/v6 nightly build at: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android
Please note that current Fennec builds are too large for some older or less powerful phones, and the user interface is not yet adapted to run on 320x480-pixel screens.

  • Swap HTC Touch 2 for HTC Hero

Hi, we currently have the HTC Touch 2 on contract with BT (swapped from the HTC S620 in Jan) and we are finding it awful, it is slow, unresponsive and poor battery! Is there any way of having this swapped for a HTC Hero (with the obvious price plan increase).
If this is not an option could we request another HTC Touch 2 to see if the problem is with the individual unit?
    Thanks,

    Hi Maddock,
I'll see what I can get sorted out for you but I should be able to get one of those options you mention in place.
Could you drop me an email with your BT account details and a link back to this thread.  Just sent to [email protected]

Sorry, Firefox 4 beta is not available for the HTC Hero. Firefox will not appear in the Market for most phones with incompatible hardware. You can check if your phone is supported here:
    https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android
Even on some supported devices, a bug in the Market software prevents Firefox from showing up. This may be related to the fairly recent Android Market app update. If you go to Settings/Applications/Market and choose "Uninstall" you can uninstall the update, and then search for and install Firefox from the marketplace.
Or, if you have a supported phone, you can download the app directly from here:
    http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/4.0b3/android-r7/multi/
(Note: To download the app directly for an AT&T phone, you will have to search for instructions on "sideloading" the APK file, since AT&T disables the option to install from non-Market sources.)

  • HTC Hero (Android) and Archlinux...

    Hey all
If nothing special happens, tomorrow i will be proud owner of an HTC Hero, running under Android.
I was just asking myself if someone of you has an experience with mobile phone under Android and Archlinux.
Is it possible to connect the phone under Archlinux ?
Is it possible to make a synchro with apps under Linux ? (seems to be very difficult)
Is it possible to see the content of the phone under Arch ?
If yes what do i have to install to push files from Arch to the MicroSD card for example ?
So many questions at the same time
Just hopping not to be the only one qith such a phone under Arch

After connecting my G1 to my PC I get an alert on my phone asking me if I want to 'mount' the SD card to my PC. Confirming this disables the SD card for the android phone, freeing it up to be mounted by your PC.
I believe there are no apps yet that synchronise directly with what is stored locally on your PC but there are lots of programs that synchronise with your accounts for various web services. Therefore it's possible to have synchronisation going on indirectly via 'the cloud'. For instance, my phone is linked to my Google account so I have Thunderbird sync with Google Mail and Google Calendar directly. Another example would be using the Astrid application to sync your tasks with your Remember the Milk account, and then having something on your computer sync with this account (such as the Remember the Milk plasmoid for KDE 4.3) .
Modifying the onboard memory of your phone requires the Android SDK tools: http://developer.android.com/sdk/. One of the tools (adb) allows you to install software packages you have downloaded to your computer to a USB connected Android phone. This is particularly useful when you are trying to install something that isn't available on the Android Market for one reason or another (e.g. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/).
Certain programs (such as android-wifi-tether) require root access to be usable. This is done through the installation of an unofficially modified phone firmware. However, such a firmware has yet to be released for the HTC Hero (only the HTC Dream, or G1). You would do well to follow the forums at xda-developers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=508) if you are interested in waiting for this feature.
With root access it is even possible to have an unadulterated version of Debian running on your phone by following a very simple guide:
    http://www.androidfanatic.com/cms/commu … =9&id=2248.
I'm sure it would be possible to put Arch on the phone but that would be a more involved process than simply downloading the image in the guide linked above.
I tried using Firefox under IceWM but the phone is too underpowered to make using this practical. However, it works great with CLI apps and this alone makes this hack worth doing.
Anyway, I hope this at least somewhat answers your questions. I am sure someone with more experience of using Android will be able to provide you with better information than I.

  • Android (Sprint HTC Hero) vs. Pre Experience

    All:
I owned the Palm Pre for 29 days on Sprint and have now been an HTC Hero user for a week. Here are some quick thoughts comparing WebOS to Android so far....
    Overall Experience:
Overall, I must admit that Palm's WebOS is a FAR smoother, intuitive, and easier-to-use operating system. The way the menus and selections work on the Pre was totally consistent across applications, with easy sliders, widgets, etc. that were made to work similarly across all apps.
In Android, the way menus work is far more complicated. Sometimes you have to back up through multiple menu layers in Android to change a phone or app setting, sometimes you don't...it's weird and inconsistenct.
    Multitasking:
Also, Palm is correct when they say that WebOS has TRUE easy-to-use multitasking. No other smart phone currently compares in my experience. No matter WHAT I was doing on the Pre, I was ALWAYS able push the little button, go into "card view" and simply slide back and forth among all running applications without shutting any of them down. On the Pre, I could check movie times while on a phone call, for example. There's nothing remotely like that level of easy multitasking in Android that I can see.
In Android, one has to back out of applications step by step if you want to go do something else at the same time. Sometimes that shuts the first app, sometimes it doesn't. Android is more like the iPhone in this way than the Pre.
The VERY few applications I've seen (so far) that actually CAN stay running on Android when you want to go do something else do so in the background, and even those few are hard to leave on the screen or in the menu where you left them. Sometimes, you simply have to back completely out of the app to go do something else....unless I'm missing something in Android that let's you do that. Another difference is that the phone and app settings are far more intuitive to get into on WebOS than in Android. In Android, bringing up settings from the home screen pummels you with the total list of every possible setting on the phone, and the order of the list isn't intuitive. On the Pre, one can enter setup screens in a more context-sensitive way than on Android.
    Calendars:
Another thing: the native, layered calendar on the Pre that synchs with Google, Outlook, etc. is FAR more slick and intuitive and easy to use than the HTC Hero's native calendar widget. I really miss that on the Pre. Oh..and the Hero's calendar doesn't offer a weekly view! LOL The Pre did that, in addition to month and day views.
    Screen and Speed:
Also, the Pre was MUCH faster and had a much brighter screen. Everything was fast, and the browser went from portrait to landscape view very quickly, with a nice rotation effect to let you know it was flipping. The Hero just sort of lags for a few seconds then suddenly changes views. Overall, the Sprint HTC Hero is much laggier, hiccup-y phone than the Palm Pre.
So Why Hero/Android and not Pre for now?
So why did I dump the Pre, despite the clear superiority of WebOS and the Pre computing power? In my case, the initial hardware build quality made for a really bad experience for me....cracked screen for no reason, constant reboots due to loose-fitting battery, etc. Also, like the Hero, the Pre initially had no ability to transfer contacts to my car bluetooth kit...and never DID work quite correctly with Bluetooth (e.g., call waiting and many other Bluetooth functionality bugs). Finally, having to open the little plastic door everytime I wanted to charge the Pre in my car was ridiculous.
If they come out with a Pre2 that fixes those build quality issues, I'd definitely go back to the FAR superior and well-integrated WebOS phone line. For now, I'll try the Hero because of the slightly better build quality...and the digital compass. Also, I want to try augmented reality apps, and the Pre simply doesn't have a digital compass like the Hero and iPhone.

Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

I went for the touch 2 and have no regrets. I went for it purely on cost and initially was concerned that the screen would be too small. However once I got it I discovered that it is crisp and clear & easy to use. Downsides are no accelerometer so it won't go into landscape when you tilt it unlike other touch phones, however apps like You-tube will automatically go full screen on landscape and are a joy to watch. Also the predictive text has a problem learning new words, however HTC are apparently working on a fix for that. It's only a problem if you have an unusual name like Russ that you like to add to things! (have learnt it's quickest to type Russell then delete 3 characters!!)
On the plus side it's nice and small so you can almost forget it's in your pocket. Being WM6.5 there are loads of apps available both from the market place and the interweb.
There are times when the stylus is a must but after a bit of time even my fingers are geting the hang of the keyboard for quick sms replies etc.
Facebook app works ok, not being a heavy user it meets my needs but there might be better apps out there.
    enjoy making your decision

Ok, throw away comment there might earn you some kudo's good for you.. However, nothing I said was untrue..
I'd just as happily recommend another Symbian phone as another Nokia phone (s60) if it had been proven stable.. The N97, for the moment, is a bit of the odd one out.. There are many singing its praises, but then there are many (see this thread) who are very unhappy.. Even networks are unhappy (O2 and Orange in the UK refusing to carry the phone says a lot!)
Symbian is being stretched.. its trying to give PC functionality in 100meg of rom.. it is a stretch.. and I think this is why we're having so many problems..
Feel free to give some positive reasons why the N97 is worth keeping hold of to balance the, what I hope are, honest reasons the phone isn't that great at the moment.. I can start you off..
Screen is a good res for the size.. beats most of the competition
    Compass is a good idea
32Gig + an SD card slot FTW
Charge over USB with a standard cable (YES, microUSB is standard.. it is a good thing)
touch screen and a keyboard without the bulk associated.. the phone is pretty compact
Supports Line-2 or ALS.. lots of phones have support disabled.. the 5800 unbranded, for example (it's only enabled on the orange branded one as far as I can tell)
Ovi store (asides from the wall papers and ring tones and occasional outages) is a breeze to use
Ovi Maps.. its more or less free and covers the world
    TV Out
These are good things.. but I'll spare you the horrendous list of the bad..

  • HTC Hero upgrade last week removed my HTC factory ...

Going through the forum earlier I did see someone else had the same problem but it was linked to another thread.  So sorry if this is  covered somewhere else but I can't be the only one with this issue.
I had a system upgrade message two days ago which I clicked on.  I have now lost the original clock and weather functions and there is no longer a HTC widget button when pressing the add bitton - the range of widgets have been reduced considerably although there is a function on the top <get more HTC widgets> but these are rubbish (coin toss, dice etc).
In the other post that mentioned this the solution was to do a restore to factory settings? For real?? Do an update and then loose all of your contacts, messages and I guess downloaded applications too.
I'm currently abroad so this will give my data a hammering.  Thanks HTC if this is the only solution. Will throw this in the bin and get an iphone!!

It seems like you've already done this, but Press and hold on a blank area of the screen and it should come up with a page that says 'Add To Home' at the top of it. You can select 'Widget' from there.
I have an updated HTC Hero in my hand and the clock and weather widgets are both in that list without having to go to 'get more HTC widgets'.
If it hasn't worked that way for you, you'll probably have to do a factory reset. It just seems like an unfortunate error that has occurred during the android upgrade. if you factory reset the handset, you'll probably have to update android again to the newest version. Hopefully this time it'll go through without a hitch.

  • HTC Hero as modem for laptop ( SOLVED)

    Hi,
I have been trying to use my HTC Hero phone data package for browsing the web from my laptop with no success.
The steps I have taken so far ( based on googling the query and reading the wiki )
    1. Installed USB RNDIS driver for SynCE from the AUR
    2. Brought the interface up ( the interface is named usb0 on my system, not rndis0 )
    3. ran the command dhcpcd usb0
And then it broadcasts for a lease and then times out.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

  • Application crashes with Android 2.3.3 update

    Hi All,
My development phone(Google-Nexus One) recently received the Android 2.3.3 update and although native applications run faster my Air application is failing basic test cases.
Simply scrolling a list with TileLayout and MobileIconItemRenderer causes the application to crash. Error dialog reports the the application process has stopped responding and only option is to force close. Scrolling is very cluncky and not usable on 2.3.3(disregarding the crashing), testing the same build on Android 2.2 is fine.
Has anyone else seen performance/stability issues with Android 2.3.3 update?
    Any help is much appreciated,
    Cheers,
    Greg

As I said, I installed a new version of Android in my smartphone, which forced me to reinstall all the applications (including the Adobe AIR), so it's the version 2.7.1.1961.
I checked other applications that depend on Adobe AIR and see that is a common problem with Adobe AIR applications and several people complain about.

  • When i try and download firefox for my HTC Hero I get a message saying "Error: Data not found."

I really would love to use FireFox on my phone, but every time I try and hit "download for Android" I get the error message. I saw there was a similar question for a different phone. Please tell me this is for a different reason! I really want FireFox!

Just to verify, I downloaded Fennec nightly for my HTC Hero, but crashes everytime I try to open :/ Hope to see a 'light' version of either FF4a or Fennec in the future for these devices.

I’m returning my N97 today to get a HTC hero. My mails, calendar, pictures, is no problem. But how do I transfer ALL my contacts? I can not use phone to phone Bluetooth, as I won’t have both phones and the same time. I need to move the contacts to my computer and then from there to the HTC hero. I have windows vista. What is the best application for this? (My pc have Bluetooth and USB) Thank you in advance.
Replaced my buggy Nokia N97 with a HTC Hero.
Besides the camera and the real keyboard the HTC Hero pawned the N97 on every level.
    Solved!

First Using Nokia PC suite or Ovi suite sync ur contacts in N97 with Outlook and after u get HTC hero use that device's sync application to sync it back to the device

  • ISE BYOD with Android device

    hi
i deployed ISE for BYOD and its working fine for windows and Apple devices. the issue is with android. sometimes i can register the devices in MY DEVICES portal and ISE will redirect me to download the network assistant tool. and sometimes it refuses to register the devices and its showing this error for some devices "unsupported operating system type encountered" and showing this error for the others "We are unable to determine access privileges in order to access the netwotk. Please contact your administrator"
does anyone know how to solve this issue?
    thanks in advance.

    Ok, so the obvious things for the first part of the problem are;
    Is the Android Client using a supported OS? Check here;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ise/1.1.1/compatibility/ise_sdt.html#wp80321
Are you using the latest Supplicant Provisioning plugins in ISE? And are you using the latest version of ISE?
Do the failing Clients have anything in common? Same hardware, OS Version, etc?
The second issue, where  you get "We are unable to determine access privileges in order to access the netwotk. Please contact your administrator" is typically caused by one of three things.  Either your Client has been idle for too long and the session has timed out, the ISE hasn't been able to Profile your device yet (and so doesn't know how to provision it), or you haven't configured ISE with an Android Supplicant Provisioning config.
Finally, I've had that last problem before, albeit on a different handset, I missed some ports/protocols/hosts on my ACL
