I bought factory unlocked iPhone 4s 16GB from US last week. I am planning to use it in India. Should I activate it while in America or is it sufficient to activate from India?

Do I need to do anything else from US so that I can use it without any glitches in India? Please help out.My first experience with an apple.

You did buy it from an Apple Retail Store didn't you and definitely unlocked rather than contract free
Apple Retail sell both

  • HT4061 i bought an unlocked iphone 4s in the UK, am now living in Thailand. cannot use phone on AIS simm card. any ideas please?

iphone 4s bought from a friend in Uk. phone unlocked. unable to use phone in thailand, is there anything i have to do to get the phone working. have put a AIS sim card in the 4s, it comes up, activation failed, carrier not supported. do i try another sim card from a different carrier, how do i find what carriers are supported on this iphone? do i need to take the phone to a shop for unlocking to this carrier? any info would be very helpful. many thanks

It seems as though the iPhone is not unlocked from the carrier. You need to contact the UK carrier the iPhone is locked to and ask them if they can unlock the iPhone as they are the only ones who can unlock it.

  • No Service with factory unlocked iPhone 4S

I bought a factory unlocked iPhone 4S in Canada – it worked perfectly with the different Canadian carriers (Rogers and Telus).
I moved to Denmark to study and have recieved a SIM card from Oister (uses 3's network).
When I put the SIM card in it recognizes the SIM card and asks for a PIN code, which I enter. After that I get a carrier update. However after that it sits on Searching... for a bit before going to No Service. A look in the "About" section shows "3" as the operator however under Network it says "SIM not provisioned".
I've tried to do a simple restore and update to 6.1.3 with no success. I've even done a DFU restore with no success.
The strange thing is that I'm not getting any "Your iPhone has been unlocked screen" or anything like that when using iTunes. For example, I restore my iPhone, then the activation screen comes on the iPhone, I go through the whole process and get to the homescreen after which iTunes asks me if I want to restore my iPhone from an old backup. No errors or messages telling me my phone is unlocked/not unlocked.
I know the phone is unlocked for sure, I even gave Apple a call and they checked and their systems indicate that my phone is unlocked.
    Any ideas?

Iit sounds like your account is not properly provisioned by your carrier. Contact them and have them check the provisioning on the account.

  • "Factory Unlocked" iPhone 5s activation

Hi! I just received my sealed "factory unlocked" iPhone 5s as i did last year when iPhone 5 came out... Last year i had no problems i just turned the device on followed activation instructions at the end i just inserted my local sim and it worked fine.
Today (after almost a year) i removed my sim to put it on the new "UNLOCKED" phone and the first thing i noticed as stated by the online store it was a tmobile sim card
"If you buy iPhone for T-Mobile, it will arrive with a nano-SIM card already installed that you can activate by visiting an Apple Retail Store or a T-Mobile store or by calling T-Mobile."
Ok no problemo i said... because of this:
"When you travel internationally, you can use a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5s from a local GSM carrier. "
but the thing is when i inserted my local sim this time it asked me for an activation and then, surprise!!:
I already restored, tried over iTunes, with Tmobile sim, without the sim, with my local sim and it's still the same... I'm actually waiting for 6:00am when tmobile opens the call center so i can try an activation, would that be the way (call tmobile first) to internationally use this phone? has anybody else had this problem? Is there a faster way to fix this?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Thanks of posting this question. Have you figure it out? I cant find definitive answers anywhere about using iPhone internationally. Very frustrating.  When i call Apple I get answers like "U.S. laws work in the U.S." They basically dont know. But I see people using their smart phones abroad and i doubt they are paying International rates.
I am about to travel for one year all over Europe, Russia and Middle East. I am on Verizon plan in the U.S., but don't want to add International plan - too expensive. I am going go freeze Version for a year, which will allow me to use my iPhone for internet when there is WiFi.
I would like to buy an unlocked Apple 6 (no contract) but only if I can buy a local (Turkish, Russian, French) SIM card in the foreign county and use my phone both as a phone and a device to search internet.
Second question. If I buy iPad with cellular, can I insert local SIM card without any problem?
Somebody said "unlocked" is not the same as "factory unlocked." Is the situation the same with new iPhone 6?
    Greatly appreciated!
    Irina

hello..i have purchaes iphone 5 from u.s it's a factory unlocked iphone 5 ..on may14th..it has warranty till may14th of 2014..and i came idia on july and after using the phone for 1moh in india ,when i'm trying to restore it doesn't shows apple iphone menu..it displays the screen image of connect usb cable to restore itunes .and i tried  times and it shows the error (-1)..when i have contacted apple the said bring the phone to us we will replace it with new one....now i can't go to u.s so please kindly help me..as soon as possible...please

EDIT 2: It cannot be restored via iTunes 'cause I get a screen message saying that there's no SIM card in the iPhone I'm attempting to activate. The friend who sold me the phone showed me a method for restoring it on the phone itself, without having to send the command through iTunes (connect the phone to computer, turn it off, hold both Home and Power buttons until the Apple logo disappears, release the Power button without releasing Home button, iTunes shows a message about an iPhone in restoring mode, restore, etc.). Thing is, I tried this two or three times on the iPhone 5 but the device still doesn't recognize the stupid SIM…
    Please, help

yes you can if there are GSM carriers in Mongolia.  If your phone breaks, you will need to send it to somone you know in the US to bring it to Apple for repair.

  • I want to buy a factory unlocked iphone 4s from US ,will it work in india ?

i want to buy a factory unlocked iphone 4s from US ,will it work in india

Unlocked iPhone 4S's are not yet generally available at retail in the U.S. Currently, the only official way to get one is order from the US online Apple store. This will require a US credit card with a valid US billing/shipping address.

Was it purchased from an official Apple Store, not a reseller?  Only Apple Stores sell official factory unlocked phones.  The others sell hacked to unlock phones, and the unlocking is unstable.
    Try these steps, as needed:
    1. Reset phone - press both home and on/off buttons for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
    2. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    3. Replace SIM card (and reset network settings again)
    4. Restore Phone in iTunes using a backup
    5. Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup

Can I purchase an IPhone 5 that is factory unlocked, so that I can insert my t-mobile sim card and use it on my service from the apple store?

Not in the US, at the present time. Apple has not started selling officially unlocked iPhone 5's in the US, & has not announced when they will.

i bought an unlocked iphone 4s from dubai but it does not work with an indian idea sim..help

If you are both on the T-mobile network, the sim card should work.  If you did a Erase All Content and Settings, then she should be at the point of activation as a new device...talk to T-mobile and be sure the sim she is using is a valid sim card.

  • I bought an unlocked iPhone 4s in America from an Apple Store, need Japanese service.

As the topic line states, I bought an unlocked iPhone 4s in America from an Apple Store, need Japanese service. I need to use it in Japan. What should I do? What is a good provider? I heard that Softbank will not let you use ANY iPhone that is not purchased from them. So I am wondering what to do.
I will be studying in Japan for 15 months, so I think it best that I get a 2 year contract, seeing as I plan to work here, following graduation. Does anyone know a way around the Softbank issue? If not, should I choose AU or Docomo? If those don't make much sense, either, than should I simply return the iPhone that I purchased in America and sign up for a two year contract with Softbank here?
P.s. The whole purpose behind buying it in America to begin with was because if I return to America, I can always use it there, too.

    Hi,
I am in the same situation as Iooc, I live in Uruguay and the iphone 4s costs 1400 Us dollars. I have been told that this price is caused because apple does not offer a discount to the Uruguayan distributors, therefor they are buying at the same price as in an apple store.
Well, as I have a friend travel next week to the US, I wanted to know about the unlocked iPhone 4s. Is it only GSM? Won't I be able to use intent 3G in this phone here in Uruguay?
    Thanks

  • I bought an unlocked iPhone 5s from USA and travel back to my counry but won't work in my country

I bought an unlocked iPhone 5s from USA and travel back to my counry but won't work in my country

Well, there is nothing anyone here can do for you. Did you actually purchase it at an Apple Store, or at another retailer like BestBuy, HH Gregg, a mall kiosk, T-Mobile, AT&T, etc?
The ONLY source for unlocked iPhones in the US is Apple. If you purchased it anywhere other than at an Apple Store, you purchased a locked phone.
You can call AppleCare and give them the serial number of the phone to confirm the status of the lock.

  • Will a factory unlocked iphone 4s from the apple retail store come with a simcard.

Will a factory unlocked iphone 4s from the apple retail store come with a simcard.Furthermore will my new phone need to be activated in store or can i do it myself

No. You'll need to get a SIM from your carrier. Since you won't have a SIM, there will be no way to activate the iPhone at the store, so you'll have to do it yourself.
    Regards.

  • Factory Unlocked iPhone 4 from Canada not working overseas

Hi all, I'm looking for help.
I purchased a Factory unlocked iPhone 4 in Canada for the purpose of selling it on eBay (to help offset the cost of my own iPhone 4 purchase). It was purchased from an Apple Store in Toronto.
The buyer is in Ireland, he got the phone, put in his 02 micro-sim and gets the following message: "The SIM Card inserted in this phone does not appear to be supported." He has 2 micro-sim cards and both did not work.
Has anyone encountered anything like this? Are there limitations to how unlocked these phones truly are? Any advice or thoughts on a solution?
Any help would be appreciated, I've called the Apple support many times, and they tend to not be very aware of how their own factory unlocked phones work.

This is how I Think it works in canada for the iPhone 4 Factory Unlocked this info is from the apple web site about the I phone 4 is Factory Unlocked only from the Apple web store online only I think.
this is the info that I copied from the Apple web store site I hope this helps you.
Here is a link to the info on the Apple Store Canada web Site

    Buy your iPhone from
Apple commitment-free.
It works with the carrier of your choice.
_*Buy your iPhone from the Apple Online Store*_
_*and choose your own GSM carrier.*_ *_You can change carriers at any time._*
    It’s easy to set up.
Get a compatible SIM (iPhone 3GS) or micro-SIM card (iPhone 4) and select a plan from the carrier of your choice. Then insert the card and set up your iPhone using iTunes on your Mac or PC. With a few clicks, you can start making calls.
    It works internationally.
Because this iPhone is commitment-free, you can purchase a micro-SIM or SIM card and service from a local carrier at your destination. Or check with your home carrier regarding international roaming charges.
