I buy an Ipod for my wife and I need to go thru this to get support?

I bought an Ipod for my wife. Loaded it with all her CD's, a couple of months ago, then I deleted all the songs from Itunes. I added a few songs to iTunes to burn a CD. When I connected my wife's Ipod Nano to charge the battery, which was dead, I noticed that it was putting those songs on her Ipod. I stop the upload and delete the songs from Itunes. After the battery charge it appears there is nothing on the Ipod. Is this right?

Thanks!
When I noticed it trying to add my music to her Ipod I stopped it, disconnected the Ipod and tried to change the preferences, but it would not let me because there was no Ipod connected. Then I connected the Ipod so I could change the preferences. Catch 22!
I have already changed it to manual, but does this mean everthing is gone and I have to add all my wife's CD's again?
