Do not expect an update or patch to CS4 ever again. CS4 is no longer supported. That has been made abundantly clear.
That being said, there are some users running CS4 under Lion, so you'll just have to troubleshoot your system—or upgrade to CS5.

You can install on up to 2 computers for your personal use.
If you will be giving away or disposing of the old one, go to the Help menu in Photoshop and select "deactivate". Also uninstall off the old one check marking the option to remove the serial number.

Find your serial number quickly
You can activate software without following up and registering it... at least that was the case in the past. The serial number is normally located on the disc case or a box inside the main box. If you did not purchase the disc from Adobe then it is possible you would have dealt with a redemption code, in which case it would have been up to you to keep a record of the serial number, especially if you did not follow up and register the software.

Can't install Photoshop CS4 Ext

I have a computer with Win XP SP3 with CS4 Design Standard already installed.
I installed Photoshop CS4 Extended, but when I start Photoshop Ext, Photoshop (not Ext) starts.
I deinstalled Photoshop Ext and Photoshop in CS4 Design Standard, then installed Photoshop CS4 Ext again.
But when I start it, Photoshop (not Ext) starts.
So I deinstalled Photoshop Ext, deinstalled complete CS4 Design Standard. I used Clean Script CS4, deleted preferences files, then installed Photoshop CS4 Ext again. But still the Photoshop starts (not Ext).
Does anybody have any idea?

There is no upgrade path from 7 to CS4 if that is what your asking. You will have to buy the whole PS CS4 Ext product.
Is it worth it? Depends on what you do with the software. PS CS4 Ext comes in 64 bit and can handle all the RAM you can throw at it. But your system must be able to support the CS4 requirements and that in itself could be costly upgrade wise. Photoshop elements is pretty good for the average user. However if you want it all CS4 would be the way to go and is geared for the professional user. I don't consider myself a pro but I use it for my hobby and such.
If you can hold off CS5 is coming down the pipeline. If you buy CS4 extended now at the full blown price and CS5 comes out and you want CS5 you have to eat the price of CS4 plus the CS5 upgrade. Just food for though (No pun inteneded. Ok, just a little one). PS CS4 is a lot of bucks for just casual photo adjustment usage.

Can't install photoshop CS4

I am using windows XP SP3 and tried to install photoshop CS4 many times. But every time, after a certain extent of the completion of the setup, my system automatically restarts. I checked the setup log file and found that the last line of the log file is same each time I try to install it. That means some particular operation is creating some problem. The last few lines of the setup are as follows:

Problems installing Photoshop CS4, keeps getting stuck on "installing Adobe Air." Tips?

I'm trying to install Photoshop CS4, but it keeps getting stuck on "installing Adobe Air" every time. Freezes, makes no more progress, eventually I have to force quit. I've even downloaded and installed it (Air) separately, but it keeps getting stuck on it in the CS4 install. Any tips? I'm running 10.8.5 on a MacBook Air. Saw something about deleting Adobe FlashPlayer to maybe fix it? Any and all tips welcome. Thx.

Googling only comes up with a couple things where someone was trying to
install a cracked version they downloaded, so it could be a corruption
problem.
If this is a downloaded installer, then redownload it and try installing,
again.
If you are inserting a DVD and autoplay is starting up and you get this
message, you can shut down the installer process as you've done then instead
of double-clicking the DVD, use right-click Explore to view the files
directly on the DVD without running AutoPlay, then find the setup.exe or
something.MSI with EN in it's name to run the installer, directly, without
goint through autoplay. This would only make a difference if the autoplay
is corrupted somehow but everything else is ok. Since your error message
talks about autoplay then maybe that is the case.
If you are calling Adobe for support, it can take hours, depending on when
you call.

and basically apologizes for poor support, recently, while they change from

Can I use Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended on my brand new iMac? I had PS on my old Mac using the student licensing.

About four years ago, I purchased Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended while I was in undergrad. I downloaded it to my Mac. Since then, I've purchased a brand new iMac. Can I use this same software? I know it's been four years so the software is very updated, AND my new iMac does NOT have a cd drive. This may all be in vain. I'm just clueless! Thanks!

When you purchase a Creative Suite collection, you can't run an upgrade on an individual product within the Suite. You have to upgrade the entire collection.
You could purchase a copy of Photoshop CS6, or a subscription to Photoshop which can be as little as $9.99 with the Photography plan to the Creative Suite.
Adobe no longer sells upgrades to CS3 or CS4.

Tina Hadley did you migrate/transfer your applications over to your new Macintosh? If so this could cause problems with your serial number being recognized. Please run the available uninstallers located in Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder. Once this is done you will also want to run the CC Cleaner Tool. The Adobe Cleanscript CS4 should take care of things. On the Premiere fora, we normally recommend that one run it several times, rebooting between each.
Also, here is a general CHECKLIST for installing most Adobe programs.

I have a copy of Photoshop CS4 and I would like to install it on my Surface Pro. However, I don't know if I can accomplish this as my copy is on a CD and the Surface Pro has no CD drive.

Think you can copy over the zip file, unzip and install. This will not work if you already have 2 activated copies of CS4 already. If so you will have to deactivate one copy.

Cannot install Photoshop CS4 on Windows 8.1

Trying to install Photoshop CS4 on Windows 8.1 but upon the initial "Checking system profile" step of the installation I keep getting this: "Setup has encountered an error and cannot continue. Contact adobe customer support for assistance". Anyone know how to fix this?

You can try installing in compatibility mode and check.
Windows 8.1 is not a supported OS for Photoshop CS4. I would recommend purchasing the latest Photoshop CC.

When I try to install Photoshop CS4 extended, machine locks up

Down loaded LION. Photoshop CS4 extended was working initially. Then experienced hiccup, my daughter was going to clean up my machine for me and deleted a bunch of files. Things were so screwed up I had to restore LION. In the process, CS4 got corrupted somehow. Tried to reinstall and whenever I do, the machine locks up and the dark screen of death appears. I've tried everything to get CS4 to work but to no avail. Sure would appreciate some suggestions, I really depend upon CS4 for my photographic work. Thanks

Since my last post (initial question/problem) I logged onto Adobe. Among their recommendations was to download Adobe CS5 cleaner; which I did. Still cannot even install Photoshop. As soon as I try, I get the dark screen of death which requires that I power down and restart. Any ideas?
