I can't open rtf files created using the 'touch' command in Terminal

I don't know much about CLI but I like to play with my tech. When I create an RTF file using
touch foo.rtf
it creates the file but when I try and open it, it just says "The document “foo.rtf” could not be opened."
What's the deal?

Answered Here on StackOverflow:
As you've likely discovered, touching a nonexistent file will create a zero-byte file with the name you specify. (touch is also used to update the modification time on an existing file. Seeman touch for further details.)
The problem you're running into is that though a completely empty file is valid HTML, text, or Markdown, it is not valid RTF—this is true of many file formats, actually, which are structured in a particular way and require some data to be present be valid.
Based on my experimentation, the bare minimum RTF file appears to be
{\rtf1}
If you'd like to create a blank RTF file from the shell, try this:
echo '{\rtf1}' >Foo.rtf
Note the above will overwrite Foo.rtf if it exists.
Thank you user Zigg

Can I open psd files created in Photoshop CC with lower version? Actually CS5.
My home and office have different version each.

Yes, PROVIDED that the file has not been saved with any layers containing any of the specific new features introduced starting with Photoshop CC and higher.
If the file has been flattened or if it was flat to begin with there will be no problems.

    Dear Sir/Madame,
I am creating a exception report at the server-end using utl file utility. I want to display this report at the client end. A user doesn't have any access to server. Will u please write me the solution and oblige me.

One way of doing this is to write a PL/SQL procedure that uses UTL_FILE to read the file and DBMS_OUTPUT to display the contents to the users.

  • Can't open 1 document created using travel journal template

Since installing Snow Leopard yesterday I found out I can't open this one file I created using the travel journal template. All other Pages '09 files are fine. I just get this error message telling me Pages had to close my document "unexpectedly".
*"Pages quit unexpectedly while using the SFWordProcessing plug-in"*
Don't see why it would need to use this plug-in. And I don't recall choosing this plug-in. There must be a way around this. To open this file by turning off that plug-in perhaps. Unless it's absolutely necessary when using the templates. Or the "travel journal" template.

  • Can't open DNG files created with Mac CS5 downloader in Mac CS4 Photoshop

I recently installed CS5 on my mac but I kept CS4 installed as well.  I notice that I cannot open DNG files created with CS5 in Photoshop CS4.  Bridge CS4 shows the files only as icons - no image thumbnails.  I am able to open these same files on a Windows version of CS4.  Is there some plugin for my mac CS4 that will enable me to access the DNG files created with CS5?  Is there a way to use my CS5 downloader when converting my raw files from my camera to DNG files that will make them compatiple with PS and Bridge CS4?

Well, yes...but you'll need to modify your DNG Converter prefs to allow for that. You''ll need a recent (ideally current DNG Converter 6.4.1 or above) and click on the DNG Converter preferences and select the correct DNG Converter options. Check DNG Converter 6.4.1 (the current version) and click on "Change Preferences" to be sure select Camera Raw 5.4 and later then make sure CS4 is updated to ACR 5.7 (which is the last version of ACR for CS4) However, the changes made to ACR 6.x really should be adopted since IQ for ACR 6.4.x is a lot better...

  • Can I use the pfctl command in Terminal to throttle bandwidth?

The ISP I use (Northwestel) limits my upstream bandwith to 2 Mbps. While I upload at that maximum rate, the download service is disabled.
Plus, if I upload at that maximum rate for any sustained period of time (sustained being longer than about 5 minutes), my entire service is disabled and requires that I reset the modem to start it again.
As you can imagine, this is very frustrating. Especially when you consider I pay $125 a month for the service.
Very few apps offer an option to manually throttle upload speeds. Dropbox, for example, does. But Apple's PhotoStream does not.
So I'm looking for a way to globally throttle upload speeds on my Mac to a rate less than 2 Mbps so that I can avoid the above-described problems.
This has led me to the pfctl command in Terminal, which – from what I've read – would allow me to set an upload rate maximum limit in the Mac OS Mavericks firewall. The problem is, I'm a novice command line user and so can't figure out how to compose a command properly.
Does anyone know how to compose a pfctl command that would enable me to limit the upstream bandwidth rate on my Mac to about 1 Mbps?
Alternatively, is anyone aware of another way to globally set an upstream bandwidth rate limit on a Mac, perhaps a utility or app?
Any input or thoughts will be gratefully accepted.

There are gui apps for this.  Apple has one.

  • Can't open .xls files created by Numbers

All of a sudden, using Numbers '09 I can no longer open certain .xls files that I created in the first place by saving .numbers files as Excel files (using the "Save copy as Excel Document" checkbox in the Save As... dialog box). Some will open, but the vast majority attempt to open, and then I get an "Import Error - An unknown error occurred." message. Backed up copies of the same files produce the same result. New .numbers files I save as Excel documents can't open either.
Background: Earlier tonight while saving a .numbers file as an Excel Document, the blue "progress" bar got about halfway and then just hung there. Having not rebooted the computer for a couple of weeks, and lots of apps open, I proceeded to shut down other processes and eventually the blue progress bar finished and an Excel file was saved. However, after rebooting the computer, the above inability to open Excel files started to occur. Something in the "save as" process must have corrupted?
I quit Numbers, deleted the com.apple.iwork.numbers.plist file from Library/preferences, emptied trash, and restarted Numbers -- but that didn't solve the problem.
What would you all suggest now at this point? Would reinstalling Numbers solve this? (hmmn, where is that disc?) I'm personally fine with the .numbers format, but my clients are not, hence the need to save as Excel documents. Any help would be appreciated!

ack, this whole thing is frustrating. I can create new .numbers documents, save them as Excel documents, and those resulting .xls documents will open fine. HOWEVER, if I grab an old .xls document from a time machine backup (over a month ago), I cannot open it. Nor can I open an newly saved .xls document saved from the same original .numbers file.
It would seem that the only thing I can do now is take those old .numbers files and copy/paste the content into a brand new .numbers file. After saving as, the resulting .xls files open fine (with the usual "import warnings", but I'm used to those )

  • Can't open InDesign files created on my mac on my pc

I have both a Mac (@ home) and a PC (@ work). I recently installed CS5 Standard on both machines. Everything works great until I try opening something I've created on the Mac at home on my PC at work.  It tells me that I'm missing a plug in.  I did a standard install on both machines and the files I'm working with are all relatively simple.  Not sure what I need to do to make sure that I can work seamlessly cross platform.  I am aware that the fonts situation can be dicey going from machine to machine, but I expected to at least to be able to open files.  Can anyone help me?

  • Mavericks CPU can't open pdf files created on Yosemite

I've looked around for this issue, but I haven't seen any questions similar to mine.
My wife and I have identical MacBook Pros. Hers is running Mavericks, while I've updated mine to Yosemite.
By chance, we realized that if I email her files created on my laptop, she can't open them. I've sent her Pages files, and the same files converted to PDF. So, either on Preview or Pages, she cannot open those files I've sent her.
I know that the easy answer is "update your wife's laptop to Yosemite," but I'm rather curious whether there's a bug in the system that hasn't been discovered. Besides, my wife is quite happy with Mavericks, and that's fine by me.
Any help or suggestion in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    BK

I just tested opening a Pages v5.5.1 file on Yosemite and Exporting it to a PDF file. Then I copied the PDF and Pages files over to another Mac running Mavericks and I was able to open and view the PDF file. I can't open the actual Pages file in Mavericks created in Yosemite because the Pages app is a different version in Mavericks (v5.2.2) and not compatible with the Yosemite version. But, PDFs definitely work fine and I can also open/view the same PDF file on a Mac running Mountain Lion. So, Preview in Mavericks and Mountain Lion, for me, open and view PDF files created from Yosemite/Pages without issue.
Have you tried opening your PDF file on another Mac running Mavericks?
You might try reinstalling Mavericks on top of itself. Maybe Preview in Mavericks is somehow corrupt. On the Mavericks Mac, you can redownload/reinstall Mavericks from the App Store using the same Apple ID that originally downloaded it. Or restart the Mavericks Mac into the Recovery HD (Command+R) and Reinstall OS X from there. Back up before you do the reinstall. The reinstall won't harm any data or apps. It just installs the OS over itself.

  • How can I open rtf files in pages?

    I just bought a "New iPad" (iPad3)
I am am to succesfully sync .doc files from my MacBook running Lion over to pages on my ipad using itunes.
Then I can sucessfully edit the .doc files.
But when I try it with .rtf files, I can see them on my ipad, but it won't open them.
I want to be able to move all my documents over to my ipad, but I don't want to have to convert each file individually to a .doc just so I can edit them on ipad.
    Thanks for your help!

For iOS, what came before never supported .rtf.
For OS X, what came before did support .rtf, but Apple decided to reduce its features to those of the iOS version.
So Apple had a certain logic to what they did, it was just kind of backwards:-)

I downloaded some .aep tutorial files and can't open them in AE CS6 (version 11.0.2.11). When I do, I get the error:
I assume that AE version 12.0x353 is creative cloud?
Is there any way to open newer versions of .aep files in standard CS6 versions of AE?

No, you can't open After Effects CC (12.0) projects in After Effects CS6 (11.0).
You can open an After Effects CC (12.0) project in After Effects CC (12.0) and then use a command to save the file as a version that can be opened by After Effects CS6 (11.0):
