I downloaded iOS6 on my 4s after I backed up my phone on iTunes, I lost photos from 9/17 - 9/20.  Is it lost forever or is it somewhere where I can still retrieve it?

I downloaded iOS6 on my 4s after I backed up my phone on iTunes, however, I lost all my photos from 9/18 - 9/20.  Is it lost forever or is there a chance it can still be retrieved?
