I have a bunch of old movies on a hard drive (avi format) and would like to play them on my new MacBook Pro---how do I do this?

Sorry if this is a repeat but I have a bunch of movies on an external hard drive I used to play on my Dell---they are all in avi format---how can I play them on my MacBook Pro?
