If you have an Intel Mac you can upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion. The amount of RAM you need may limit what you can do. Leopard requires 512 MBs; Snow Leopard requires 1 GB; and Lion requires 2 GBs.
If you have a G4 or G5 Mac then you are limited to Leopard 10.5.8. In addition to the memory requirement your CPU must be at least 867 MHz.
Leopard System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
a DVD drive >built-in FireWire
at least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
at least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools
Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

I am running my macbook pro on mac os x 10.5.8 but want to upgrade it to snow leopard. Where can I buy it? Do I have to go to the Apple store ore is it available online?

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

  • I currently have Leopard, and there are no longer updates for it. So I must upgrade to either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Without doing so I cannot update my itunes, and my ipod is no longer compatile with my mac. How can I buy the upgrade

I currently have Leopard, and there are no longer updates for it. So I must upgrade to either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Without doing so I cannot update my itunes, and my ipod is no longer compatile with my mac. How can I buy the upgrade, since I do not have access to the mac store as that comes with Snow Leopard? I went to Best Buy and they said neither Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion can be bought there.

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

  • How do I reinstall Lion if I get a new hard drive?  My mac came with Leopard and I cannot find my upgrade disk for Snow Leopard

My MacBook Pro originally came with Leopard.  I have the OS and Applications disks for Leopard but I cannot find my upgrade disk for Snow Leopard.  I would like to perform a clean install of Lion on the new hard drive and restore some data from my Time Machine backup.  I am not looking to restore the current image to my new hard drive.  I have not yet removed the exisiting hard drive nor have I wiped my data.

The only way to do that is to buy a New SL Retail DVD. Or you could buy the Lion Install USB thumb drive from Apple for $69.
You must have SL installed to then install Lion or have a thumb drive with the Lion installer.
You could also create a Lion USB Recovery thumb drive using Lion Disk Assistant. But you need to have Lion already installed and the Lion RecoveryHD Partition on your drive to make the Recovery thumb drive.

Again, that's not a problem - if you purchase Mountain Lion through the App Store, it's been updated to 10.8.2 - and when there are other updates available, you can just download and install them as well.
Just go to the App Store and purchase and install ML. Then run Software Update (Apple menu) to see if there are any updates available for your machine. I keep my System Preferences>Software Update prefs set to check automatically -
Some people would rather check manually. No big deal, just buy it and install it.

Can i upgrade my OS Snow Leopard to OS Lion on same machine

yes. As long as your mac meets Lions operating requirements:

    2GB of memory

  • Upgraded from osx snow leopard to lion and still no iCloud

Upgraded from osx snow leopard to lion and still no iCloud settings in System Preferences, why?

I have the exact same issue, and no Profiles for me under System. My system was upgraded from 10.6 as soon as Lion came out and I've never had the icon.
I have had iCloud set up by creating an account within Mail, Contacts & Calendars - but in this setup my Mobile Documents folder, my iCloud "Documents and Data", never synchronized with my other devices. That is why I began wondering why I don't have the iCon as I have seen other Macs that came with 10.7 installed factory.

  • Will I be able to upgrade Directly from Snow Leopard ro Mountain Lion

    Hello All!
Will I be able to upgrade Directly from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion without going through Lion?
    Thanks in advance

You have to upgrade Mac OS X Snow Leopard to Mac OS X Lion, Then Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
If You have Snow Leopard, then upgrading to Mac OS X Lion is only $29.99 via the Mac App's Store, a one time fee for all your Macs. I recommend that you download it to all your devices first before you actually run the installation process. Once you've upgraded to Mac OS X Lion, then upgrade to Mac OS X Mountain Lion for a one time fee of $19.99.
Mac OS X Mountain Lion will be available as a single software upgrade via the Mac App Store beginning in July 2012. The BEST PART is you only have to purchase it one time to upgrade all of your Macs. So its only like $50 bucks total for ALL your Macs to get both Lion and Mt Lion. Approximately, the same price it was when Snow Leopard's family pack came out for only up to 5 Macs. Except this time you get 2 upgrades for about the same cost for unlimited Macs compared to only 1 upgrade for up to 5 macs like before.

    I can't wait.

  • Upgrade Tiger to Snow Leopard...... hardware upgrades?

Hope I'm putting this in the right location.
I'm currently running my MacBook in it's original configuration, as follows..
    Model Name: MacBook
    Model Identifier: MacBook2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MB21.00A5.B07
    SMC Version: 1.13f3
    Serial Number: 3R648MBSWGL
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
    Volumes:
    GMacBook HD:
    Capacity: 74.21 GB
    Available: 13.21 GB
    Writable: Yes
    File System: Journaled HFS+
    BSD Name: disk0s2
    Mount Point: /
Up to now all is working well, but as my wife has a new MB running snow leopard and I don't want to get any odd file compatibility issues etc, it's time for an update.
So I'm just wondering are there any preparatory hardware upgrades I should be considering?
I only have the original 1GB of RAM...... I see from the apple store that I need to identify which generation my machine is...... from the above I thought it looks like Gen 2- is this correct?
Since I only have a bit more hard drive space left, I'd consider upping that too, but I could manage with an external if the cost was disproportionate.
Final question is will the Snow Leopard box set family pack upgrade straight from 10.4.11 without any intermediate steps?
I'm assuming that software-wise I nede to follow one of the recent guides on the forum ie tidy up unwanted files and apps, permissions before a fresh backup (superduper?).
Apologies for the slightly rambling approach (forming the question becomes a part of my decision process)
    Cheers
    Gareth

To answer your final question first you can upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 will run under 10.6. You can install and run 10.6 with what you have in the MacBook right now. 1gb of RAM and the 80gb hard drive. I recently upgraded an older MacBook (1,1) with the same configuration. The generation of your machine simply tells you how much RAM you can use. 1,1 can use 2gb of RAM, 2,1 can use 3gb, 3,1 can use 4gb. Here's EveryMac.com's page on your MacBook http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/stats/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-white -13-specs.html
If you want to upgrade your RAM and hard drive you can do so for about $50 for each.
    For RAM check DealRam.com http://dealnews.com/memory/prices/systems/Apple-Mac-Book-PC2-5300-DDR2-SODIMMS/4 3938/2GB.html or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
Your MacBook can hold two 2gb chips but can only use 3gb. I've got my 2,1 with one 1gb and one 2gb and don't notice any slowdown.
For hard drives try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

My friend gave me his old touch, however it won't sync with my new mac but it charges the itouch so i was wondering how i could sync it to my iTunes.

Does the iPod show up in iTunes on the Mac? If not try:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    also
If you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar
Otherwise what happens when you try to sync? Note that you can only sync with one iTunes library/computer. If that is the problem you should go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase and content and setting and set up the iPod on you computer/iTunes library. One content on the iPod does not belong to you.
