I have a MacBook air with OS X version 10.8.2 and an HP OfficeJet G85. Is there any way to print between the two?

I am aware that the HP OfficeJet G85 is no longer supported but are there any apps or anything that I can download that would make them compatible?

Indeed the printer is not compatible but you may be able to find some workarounds:
For printing try the HPIJS print drivers, be sure to install any of the 3 required downloads prior following the printer set up instructions:

For scanning try Vuescan which seems to support your printer:
http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/hp_officejet_g85.html

No, it doesn't store a clone. You would have needed to make one with either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.
If the files were in your ~/Library folder then they may still be there. As I said, you can access it by
going to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". I wouldn't think an upgrade would overwrite anything in ~/Library.
If you have a Time Machine backup you may also be able to use that to retrieve them.

Using the term "opened" may have been incorrect on my part. Before password protection, I simply viewed the doc by selecting it within my DROPBOX app. No revisions could be made, but I could view the doc. Now, with the doc password protected, the IPAD states this file can not be viewed.

I'm trying to use my older Acrobat 4 for printing files from an older Macintosh with system 9, so that I can store and use the pdf documents in a newer MacBook Air, with OSX 10.9. Acrobat 4 worked previously but no longer works. Any way to fix it?

You cannot; it's intentionally disabled to guard against accidental file loss. If you press Option when pasting the files, they'll be moved instead of copied.
