I have a ppc imac g3 on mac os 8.6 and i want to upgrade it how do i upgrade it

i got it of ebay and i wanna upgrade it

The upgrade path depends on the "sub-version" of the iMAc G3. Is the optical drive tray-loading or slot-loading?
Next Q: please launch "Apple System Profiler" from the Apple menu. On the fisrt page, open the section about hardware and find the processor speed. What is it?
That will tell a lot about this iMac. Basically, you can upgrade RAM and the operating system. Early iMAcs are limitesed to Mac OS10.3.9; later ones to 10.4.11. That's the reason for the questions. Depending on your confort level with getting inside teh case, you may be able to insall a larger hard drive. Not much more.
IMPORTANT: If you want to iupgrade to OSX, don't blindly jump in. Some of those iMacs can be reduced to quivering jelly if you don't first apply a frmware update. Agin, that is the importance of the community knowing the details of your new prize.

    It should upgrade fine.
Worst case is you'll need to run the Adobe Cleaner Tool (link below), then reinstall from your original discs:

  • My iMac has OS X 10.4.11 and I want to upgrade to 10.5 if I can find a retail disc. Will a 10.5.2 or .3, or .4, etc. work if I can't find a 10.5 for the starting point? Thanks. bj.

If I can find one, I want to upgrade my iMac from OS X 10.4.11 to 10.5. The Apple rep said to ensure I got a retail disc. If I can't find a 10.5 version will 10.5.1 or .2, or .3, etc. work? My iMac has the Intel Core 2 Duo. Retail versions aren't sold by Apple anymore, and are very difficult to find. Thanks. bj

You should check the Lion minimum requirements but it is likely that your machine will (or can be upgraded) to support it
    Lion
Core 2 Duo processor (or later)
    2G Ram
    Enough Free Space (30G)
Lion is currently the 'highest' version of OSX available.

  • Hello, I have macbook pro 2008 10.5.8 and I want to upgrade to new soft, which one is the proper one for me Snow leopard or mountain Lion

Hello, I have macbook pro, late 2008, OS X 10.5.8 and I want to upgrade to new soft, which one is the proper one for me Snow leopard or Mountain Lion, and what is the differences between those.
What do you recommend at this time for me.
    Thanks a lot

You can upgrade to Mountain Lion, but you have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first. Buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Then, make a backup, insert the DVD and upgrade. After upgrading, open Apple menu > Software Update and install the most recent version. Mac OS X 10.6.8 includes the App Store, so open it and purchase Mountain Lion. See if your programmes are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • What is best for me. I have been using Elements for many years (since Elements 2) and now want to but either 13 or Lightroom. Can anyone help me decide

I have been using Elements for many years (since elements 2) and now want to upgrade. I am reasonably old and at this stage do not understand Creative Cloud. Am I best to upgrade to Elements 13 or try Light room 5?

Do you want to make a one time purchase (Photoshop Elements) or pay monthly rent ($9.99 per month for Photoshop and Lightroom)
Do be aware that the subscription model is just like rent... stop paying and the programs stop working... but you get the full Photoshop

I have an apple iMac G5 running Mac OS 10.4.11 can i upgrade it to 10.5?
If so will i also loose all the software currently installed on my Mac? eg. Adobe software.
I have moved countries (opposite side of world) so i do not have my install disks, or the disks that came with my Mac.
Where can i get the 10.5 upgrade from?
Do i need my original disks that came with my Mac?
    - Thanks if anyone can help
    Note:
I have never had any problems with my G5, it's been my awesome helper these past 7 years, I can't say the same thing for my new Mac, but it seems now my poor G5 is slowly being made redundent because they no longer write software for it.
I don't see why i should pay for a new Mac because my old one does not always function on the web, or having a new printer because it does not support the new software.

First off, all upgrades can potentially break a system.  First and foremost, backup your data before installing anything.  Next read this tip as 10.5 loses Classic compatibility, and has these other issues outlined on the tip: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2275

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • I have a rather old iMac 20" (mid 2007) and I want to upgrade the Hard drive. How do I change it? How do I transfer all my applications? May I just copy the old hd into the new one? Thanks.

I have a rather old iMac 20" (mid 2007) and I want to upgrade the Hard drive. How do I change it? How do I transfer all my applications? May I just copy the old hd into the new one? Thanks.

There are many online tutorials on how to change out the HD on a mid 2007 iMac. One of the originals is from 2007 and is Upgrade your iMac 20" or iMac 24" aluminum (mid 2007) to 1TB Hard Drive and 4 GB RAM - DIY Guide. As far as migrating your system Apple helps out with that in Setup Assistant which automatically starts when you turn on a new Mac for the first time. After you have installed the new HD you will have to format the new HD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then you will have to install OS X. The first time you turn it on Setup Assistant will start. Follow the directions and you will be fine. In order to restore your information you will need to backup what is on the current internal HD first. I'd recommend using Time Machine (Assuming you are using Leopard or later) AND also creating a bootable clone using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Please complete your profile so at the very least we know what version of OS X your machine has installed.

I have Mac os x with 10.4.11 and i want to upgrade, what is the next operating software from a 10.4.11 for a g4 and can it be done on a g4

If you have a processor of 867 MHz or faster and a minimum of 512 MB of RAM, you can run OS X Leopard, updated to 10.5.8.
That's as far as a G4 can go.
    Check eBay for discs:

No Snow Leopard, 10.6x or Lion, 10.7x.
they won't run in a PPC Mac.

I am running 10.7.5 on an imac and I want to upgrade to Yosemite but I have no app store on my computer. Is there a way I can get the app store on my imac?

If you don't have it then you will have to reinstall Lion:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, or Yosemite
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.
Then you can download and install Yosemite if your computer meets the system requirements:
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7

I have a 27" iMac with 16GB of factory installed SDRAM and 1T harddrive.  It is telling me the harddrive is full and is not functioning correctly.  How can I adjust so that all files are managed on the harddrive rather than the SDRAM.  (BTW - design flaw here.)
Older Macs with a single Harddrive would simply expand OS management on the drive, and I think I understand the new Fusion Drive to do just that, but how do I get this product that I spent a great deal of money on to be more than a pretty screen?

I was confused by this statement
It is telling me the harddrive is full and is not functioning correctly.
OS X manages ram and when you run out, it create swapfiles to extend your ram on the HDD (Hard Disk Drive). The OS itself, takes about 16 gig of space and that too resides on the HDD.  Your 16 gig of RAM is really a temporary space that holds things from the HDD so the processor can work on them.  There is no design flaw between your ram and HDD.  Something else is going on and there are a lot of smart people here to help you figure out what that "something else" is.
I would do three things.  First I would create a backup, backups are important.  Second, I would reboot into recovery and repair my HDD.  Lastly while still booted in recovery I would repair permissions.
Can you capture a screen shot of the exact error you are getting?

You can leave the existing RAM in their current slots and add compatible modules in the empty slots. For best performance, add two of teh same size. Our 2010 iMac 21" shipped with 4GB RAM---two 2GB modules in two of the four slots. I added two 2GB modules to the empty slots and now have 8 GB RAM.
Be sure to order RAM from a trusted Mac-savvy RAM vendor. Some vendors thing a Mac is a hamburger. For over a decade I've bought all our Mac RAM (and we have 18 Macs in teh family!) from one vendor:
