Resetting User Password in Lion, Mountain Lion & Mavericks
Boot into your Recovery Partition by hold down the Command and R keys whilst booting.
When the Recovery screen appears, go to the Utilities menu and open Terminal.
In Terminal, type:
resetpassword
...a small app will open and allow you to choose the user for whom you want to change the password. If you are the admin, be certain that you choose your admin user. Type in your new password twice and give yourself a good hint. Click OK (or Done or whatever) and reboot, enjoying the use of your new, hopefully memorable, password.
Good luck,
Clinton

I just bought myself a brand new apple MacBook Pro yesterday. Today while using it it has froze on me twice for no apparent reason. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Or have it replaced.  Unless you've added a bunch of strange stuff, this shouldn't happen to a brand new one.   Let your local Apple Store get you going with a MBP that works perfectly.

Use the Migration Assistant(it'll put the data into a different user account if you've already created one), or drag them and their data through Ethernet, wireless, Target Disk mode, or through an external drive, or reinstall them from the original source.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You already have got OS X Mavericks installed (the Keynote, Pages and Numbers versions available in the Mac App Store are only compatible with OS X Mavericks).
You have got a Late 2013 MacBook Pro, which uses a special OS X Mavericks version that is not available in the Mac App Store. This is the reason why the Mac App Store is not compatible with OS X Mavericks even if you are using it. This will be fixed in OS X 10.9.1, when your Mac uses the same Mavericks version as all other Macs.
Until then, you can reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

Buy an external optical drive such as the Apple USB SuperDrive that is made specifically for that model.
Use the optical drive of your old MBP to clone the DVDs to USB flash drives, then install from the flash drives.
Connect both computers to your local network and then share the optical drive to install the software.

TVs don't support "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", so you will probably have to use FAT32. To format the external drive, follow the same steps as you did to format it with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but in the erasing screen, select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". Note that FAT32 isn't compatible with files bigger than 4 GB. Also, you may have to format the external drive in a PC

  • I just bought a new apple tv and it said that it takes 12 hours to download a rented movie

I just bought a new apple tv and it said it takes 12 hours to download a rented movie

It needs to load a portion before playback can start, the time it takes is dependent on your network.
What is your current connection via speedtest.net (at least 6mbps needed for instant HD)
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
    If on wifi try ethernet
    Reboot ATV and router

  • Why is it taking 19 hours to encode four avi. files. I just bought a new 21" iMac last week and it is just to slow to use. Thanks

I just bought a new 21" iMac last week and it is just to slow to use. Before it used to take a couple of hours now its just way too long

    Hi
As I understands it - This has nothing to do with Your iMac - Any Mac would take the same time.
May be OS and support on the Window-PC platform handles this better.
    • .avi - is no specific codec (file format) but a container and the codec in this might not be one that iDVD can directly use (encode to .mpeg2 as on DVD disks)
So either it just can't do it - or -
iDVD has to back-encode to an usably codec - THIS IS WHAT I THINK HAS HAPPENED
This back-encoding can take serious time - AND the final result usually is far from Good.
    I would
    • find out in what codec the .avi file is (I use QuickTime and in this inspector to read what codec .avi contains) (.mov is also a container)
    • import it into a program that can transcode to a better codec for iDVD - streamingDV or AIC (I GUESS)
    • then use this in iDVD

I just bought a new Mac Book Pro and did a migration of the content of the old laptop (also a Mac Book Pro) to the new one. Now I cannot start Photoshop CS6. When I am starting it I have a window "Adobe photoshop CS6 extended" opening requesting a connexion. When I am entering my password for the connexion the software crashes. How can I fix the problem?

Migrating, transferring or copying is DEMANDING trouble, not just asking for it.
Always install from scratch, from the original media,

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

I just bought a new Macbook Pro and Itunes is not letting me authorize it for use because I have 5 computers authorized including old iphones I no longer have and an old computer that is broken.  How do I deauthorize computers I no longer have?

If you've got 5 computers authorised for the account in question, and you need to free up authorizations, I'd do a "Deauthorize All" from one of the computers you have access to, and then reauthorize the computers you have access to.
For instructions, see the following document:

  • Just bought a new 27" iMac and want to sell my 2007 iMac.

I want to sell my old 2007 iMac after having just purchased a new 27" iMac. I have tranfered all of my data to the new machine but how do I now remove all of my personal details from the old Mac without losing to upgraded operating system? In the old days you would just re-install the system disc.

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps mentioned in this support article, take these steps:
Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted
If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
Erase the data partition(s) with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall  the original OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by booting into Internet Recovery (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from discs or a read-only USB key, deliver those to the new owner.
The new owner will have to repurchase the software, if need be, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer them either.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

  • I just bought a new 13" Macbook Pro. Why is it mid 2012 model?

I just bought a brand new Macbook Pro. Why isn't it a mid 2014 model?

If your new MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) is the model without Retina display,
you likely have the correct model information per the mid-2012 designator; since
the model is still in production. The Retina models have seen update or refresh
since mid-2012, and so have a different build date; but not non-Retina model that
has an optical drive. Since the non-retina MB/Pro 13" has an optical drive, the
media on DVD includes an earlier OS X version, & software, plus hardware test.

You could check http://everymac.com for other product specs and also look
into the MacBook/Pro Apple Store online product page to match spec info.
Looks like you did get the correct model for the year, check model identifier
and series build info against other databases. Apple has additional info.
If instead, you intended to get a Retina MB/Pro model, then you may have an issue.
    Good luck & happy computing!
