I'm a photographer looking for a good (detailed) resource that will inform me of specifically how I should be saving my images for print/online

I've been working in photoshop for years but I've always gotten a bit lost on exactly what size I should be saving my photo's for optimal quality.
I basically need a good website that will go over all the aspects of saving images as a photographer, but if you can answer these questions that will also help.
• What size/resolution should I save if I am giving the client images on a disk for them to print?
• What size/resolution should I be saving photo's just for online viewing?
• How come when I place my image (saved at 4in x 6in) into a new document that is (682px x 459px) the picture is pixelated?

Perhaps the best resource for all things digital media related, especially when it comes to best practices in the industry is
dpbestflow.org
Specific answers to your 3 questions:
-generally, 300ppi at the final print size is good enough in most cases. If they are printing the image very large, like a poster or billboard image, then the print size at a lower resolution can be acceptable since it's being viewed from further away. Either always get the specs from the printer for what size/resolution they require, or just give them your full-sized original image, since that's all the pixels they can possibly have to work with.
-depends on every individual's monitor settings. If you supply an image that is HD-sized at 1920x1080, and they're using a monitor with a resolution at that size or greater, the whole image will fit on their screen. If their monitor resolution is smaller than that, your image will be bigger than they can display. Browsers, website coding, monitor resolution, all factor into how these will display on each individual computer. If you want the whole image to display within a browser window then you'll want your total pixel dimensions to be smaller than the average person's monitor resolution (unless you want them to be able to zoom in and see all the detail of your full-size image, then you would upload the full image and let your website do whatever it does to display smaller/thumbnail versions which can then be clicked on to open up the full-res version. Note, the actual resolution, e.g. 300ppi, doesn't factor into monitor display. PPI means it will PRINT that many pixels per inch of paper, and has nothing to do with how it will display on monitors which only concern themselves with pixel dimensions.
-682x459 is a rather small size. Of course it will lose detail. Just imagine if you scaled your image down further into a 10x10 pixel image. You'd have 100 pixels to make up all the detail in your image. Lots of detail will be lost since you've got a lot fewer pixels to make up the image.

  • Looking for a good usb hub that will allow my mouse and external hard to work together

I'm looking for some ideas for a good usb hub that will allow me to use a wireless mouse and an external hard drive at the same time, without shorting out the mouse.  The one i currently have, when I plug in just the mouse, it's fine, but as soon as i put the external hard drive into the hub port, the mouse no longer works and i have to reinstall the drivers for the mouse.

Hubs and computers vary in their power needs, but it seems that your setup is lacking in the power department. This isn't a big deal with desktop computers, but since you use a MBP, you're going to do best with a powered USB hub.
If you're looking for a USB hub with power supply, Belkin is generally reliable (and above average in price). But the D-Link is compact, reliable, and has a good price. Aim for a USB 3.0 hub if possible, though 2.0 will work fine with just about anything. Insist on a refund if the hub doesn't work in your system. Make sure it's compact, since you'll be carrrying it around.

    Hi,
I'm looking for a online private tutor for teaching me Adobe Premiere Elements 8 through  remote cessions and Skype.

    Jacqui,
I stongly believe that Steve has given you the best advice. Actually, it's the same advice that I would have given you, if I had seen your post first!
I can verify that his books will give you more info, and in a more usable form, than tutoring, or even in-class, hands-on schooling will. Almost anything that can be done with the program (he also has a companion book for Photoshop Elements, which is often bundled with PrE) is covered in easy to understand detail.
After reading through, and working along, his second bit of advice, Muvipix, is also sound. Between this, and Muvipix fora (Community tab), there have been very few questions that could not be answered. Muvipix also is a great resource for additional articles on how things are done, plus tutorials.
I also recommend that one take an hour and read through both the FAQ and Tips & Tricks articles, found to the right of the PrE forum main page. I would read Steve's book first, so terms, etc. would be most clear.
There are two on-line training sites, that get great reviews: www.lynda.com and www.ltotaltraining.com. I have not subscribed to either, but have used the materials furnished from them with various Adobe programs. I also have several of the lynda.com books on various programs, and they are well-written. Now, they are NOT one-on-one tutoring, which is what you are looking for. They also probably do not cover PrElements, but that is just my guess. If they do, they would be another good source of training, though it's through tutorials, and not direct instruction.
This is just my 02¢'s worth of thought.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • "Looking for printer...." problem

Out of the blue, all of the machines in our office are now reporting "Looking for printer...." when users try to print to our network connected HP4200. The message is appearing in the printer app.
The printer itself seems fine, and i can print to it from a windows machine. Restarting the printer has no effect on the problem.
I've already tried the various solutions I've found in the forums here. Clearing the caches, deleting and reinstalling the printer driver, etc. works for a document or 2, but then the machine falls back into the looking for printer pattern again.
This is happening on Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard.

This problem went away as mysteriously as it arrived. Sadly, today it is back again and the proposed fix didn't help any better than all the rest of the changes we've tried. The only thing that works is to delete and reinstall the printer. However that is only good for a print or 2 before we have to do it again.
No changes have happened on the printers, the network or the macs to account for the problem coming and going.

    Hello Merole
As I understand it you can print color everywhere but from MS Word 2013? If this is the case try the steps I have outlined below to see if they resolve your issue:
On the View tab, in the Color/Grayscale group, click Black and White.
On the Black and White tab, in the Change Selected Object group, click the settings that you want.
I hope this helps resolve your printing issue. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • I've been "looking for printer" for four years.

    Hi everyone,
I decided to bite the bullet and make a forum post before giving in to my frustration and chucking the thing out the window... I am running OS 10.6.8 on a mid-2008 MacBook and have an HP Photosmart C4385 all-in-one wirelessly connected. Well, connected is perhaps too strong a term. It works great about 50% of the time, and the other 50% I spend trying to coax my computer to find it. When I go to print something I get the "Looking for printer... Printer offline" message. I've been all over the HP site (you can imagine how helpful that was) and, as suggested, tried printing a config page and typing the printer's URL into the browser, but the page doesn't load. Here are some of the specs from the config page:
    IP Address: 169.254.xxx.xxx
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
    Configuration Source: AutoIP
From some other sources it sounds like the AutoIP is the problem, but I can't find a way to set a fixed IP. I don't have access to the wireless router but this problem has stayed with me through two dorm rooms and two apartments, all with different wifi setups. Is there anything I can do?

This not intended as a solution to the IP issue, but as a possible solution to the printing problem. Why not connect your Macbook to the printer with a USB cable?  That way there is no inaccessible router to deal with.

  • Laser Jet M1212 "Looking for Printer"

    Hello,
Using the Mac  10.9.2 operating system, I have started to get the following error message when I try to print: "looking for printer" - on my computer screen.  Nothing prints.
In order to fix the problem, I must unplug and replug in my router (Cisco Linksys E2000) and turn the printer off and on.
This problem comes up at least once a day, recently.
Any ideas re how to avoid the problem altogether?
    With thanks.

    Hi AnnPiece,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand the printer keeps losing the network connection.
I will be happy to help you.
When the printer is installed on a network, (wired or wireless) the router assigns it an IP address.
However this IP address can change for various reasons.
I would setup a static IP address.
Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection. Disregard the title.
Go to Solution five: Assign the printer a static IP address.
    Hope this helps.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
    Have a great weekend!

  • Looking for an online LR3 gallery that allows clients to give feedback.

Tried FSS Select from LightroomGalleries but no luck (I only get an endless "loading gallery"). I just want something simple that would allow clients to provide feedback (comments/picks/ratings) on a series of photos I just took for them.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks very much!

Wonderful - thanks a lot for the suggestions.

  • Looking for printer...

When I try and print using a shared printer on another Mac at my home network the documents queue up for the printer, but I only get a "Looking for printer..." status. I have to remove the printer and add it again. This appears to occur after the host Mac goes into sleep mode.
The printer is a Kodak 5300. The host machine is a Mac mini. Both Macs are running 10.5.2

Found answer. The USB connection to my Airport got knocked out when someone was vacuuming the other day.

  • Looking for printer Lexmark E250dn

Mac book pro and Imac connected wirelessly to AE. Sending file to printer is increasingly frequently met with " Looking for printer". Unplugging the AE power to reset always fixes the problem. It lasts for a few jobs, then stops working again. Latest firmware/OS/drivers.
Tried all the usual ( reset AE/Printers/reinstalled printer (Bonjour))
It seems to be happening with increasing frequency(daily)
Any help will save my few remaining grey hairs...

I have the same problem every time I print something in the print queue it says "Looking for hp color LaserJet 4600 (0001E6A2A8ED)" Most of the time it eventually finds it and prints but sometimes it either takes a really long time 10min+ or doesn't find it at all. The printer is networked to my computer thru ethernet the computer and printer are plugged into a linksys switch and the printer has a static ip address. I never had this problem before upgrading to Leopard.

  • Looking for Printer Error

I have a Photosmart 7510 printer. I am on a Mac using 10.9. When I try to print I get a message looking for printer. If I turn the wifi off and then back on again it finds the printer and prints. If I want to print another page I get the error again.

    Welcome to the forums tal6620
I saw your post about your printing issue you are having with your Photosmart 7510 and your Mac running Mavericks.
I would suggest trying the following:
Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
    Repair disk permissions
    Restart the Mac
Re-add the printer (do not add the AirPrint driver)
    Best wishes!

  • "looking for printer" frustrations

    Time Capsule
HP 2600n printer (USB) into Time Capsule
Trying to print from multiple wired (and wireless) Macs to the HP2600n. Frequently I get a "looking for printer" message and cannot print to the printer as a result. On more than one occasion, I've had to power down and then power up the TimeCapsule, which worries me about the possibility of data loss/corruption.
    Anybody else? Resolution?

I'm seeing the same thing on our cd mini (10.4.11) with a Epson CX6000 printer attached to airport express. I don't know if it's related but it started happening after a recent airport express update.
