I'm going to install Arch this weekend but I have some questions
Currently I use Linux Mint on my primary PC, but I've installed Arch on my older PC at my parents house. I like it a lot and I think I want a distro that is rolling release and also that I build myself (as opposed to installing all of the bloat on Mint). However, I do have some questions; Linux is pretty new to me (been using it since about November) so I don't know exactly how everything works.
1) How do I know what packages I have to have installed for building C/C++ programs? I know in Ubuntu install gcc/g++ by itself doesn't get the job done, you need build-essential to get all of the libraries. Also, what packages do I need for OpenGL and SDL? I'm a CS major and I'm in an OpenGL class so I need to be able to compile OpenGL programs; SDL is for my own purposes, but I'd still like to have it.
2) I use Amarok to transfer songs to my iPod. Amarok 1.48 and libgpod 0.6.0 are in the repos and I know both of those are compatible with my 6th gen. However, I do have a question about transferring album art. On Mint, Amarok transfers the album art as I transfer the album, but someone told me that Amarok doesn't do that by default; there must have been a setting changed somewhere to do that. I looked through Amarok's options and didn't see anything like that... anyone know if I can do that in Arch, and how? There's no real information about Amarok in the wiki.
3) I'm going to use Gnome environment but some KDE apps (like Amarok). Will there be any problems with that that I should know about in advance?
I'll probably have some more questions once I actually install Arch, but that will do for now Those are the important ones.
1) You know by seeing its dependencies on pacman or by the developer documentation. Unlike other distros, you don't need to install dev packages. Example: You have gcc and all the basic gnu tools installed, and you want to compile a program that is not in a arch linux package yet (if theres a package, you can build it using abs / makepkg and pacman will handle the dependencies) and requires, for example, a library called "xyz", you only need to download "xyz" from pacman, and all the dev stuff will come together (like header and etc).

After a few months of being linux-less, i decided to install it again (I corrupted my partition last time and have been too lazy to fix it =P). I'm also currently using KDEmod, which is great.
However, I have some questions.
1) It doesn't seem that the sound settings are being saved when I log out of KDE. It's always at 100%, and I always have to turn it down.
2) I have this little cell-phone looking icon in the systray, and when i mouse over it it tell me:

I remember when i had Arch before that I used ArchAssistant to manage my wired/wireless connections. Is that still around? Can anyone recommend anything else, cause I also remember getting ArchAssistant to work was a hell of a project.
3) When I first logged in, the Akonadi Server Self-report popped up. I rememebr this from before, and could never get it to work (I really don't even know what Akonadi is, tbh). It says that the control and server process is not register to D-Bus. How can I fix this? Would I have to start and configure the MySQL daemon?

Then in your startup daemons add @alsa. That will restore your volume settings on boot, not sure about just logging in and out of KDE though. (I don't run KDE)

My W540 is coming in this week, and I have some questions.
So my W540 is arriving, and here is what I plan to do as soon as I get it:
Turn on computer and verify that all hardware works.
Update to the latest BIOS.
Replace the HDD with my own SSD.
Reinstall Windows.

I have a few questions about this process and the computer in general:
Some review sites say that the primary hard drive must be mounted in a proprietary plastic piece that is unavailable for separate purchase. Can this be removed from the OEM HDD and attached to a third-party SSD? I have a Samsung 840 EVO.
When installing Windows, is there a difference between creating recovery media from the original HDD and recovering to the SSD versus simply installing Windows 8.1 from the ISO and downloading drivers from the Lenovo support site? Note that I do not want any junkware that comes with the computer. Only the Lenovo software/drivers that are required for the hardware to function optimally.
I have heard some things about MBR and GPT when using UEFI, but I have no idea what it means. The SSD that I will install is currently in use in my T510, and it is running Windows 8.1 Pro. I believe it is formatted as MBR. Do I have to do anything special with this? Will all partitions be erased?
I have never owned an Optimus laptop before. Currently using a non-Optimus T510, and I just download the latest drivers from NVIDIA's website. With Optimus, where do I get my drivers? Do I only install the driver from the Lenovo site? Do I download the drivers from Intel and NVIDIA? Is it possible to force all GPU activity on either GPU and completely disable the other?

Ikeep getting "you need a newer version of Pages to open this document" but I have the newest version
You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5.1 files can not be opened in Pages 5.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Error encountered while signing. Windows cryptographic service provider reported an error. Object not found. Error code:2148073489. Windows 7, Adobe Reader XI, Symantec PKI, Smart Card and CAC. I have seen other threads for this error but none have a resolution. Any help would be appreciated.

I switched it off, cleared the PRAM and re-formatted the drive unencrypted (I found the option, it was in the dropdown for filesystem).
That appears to have been the issue, as the download and install immediately identified the disc name, which it wasn't doing before. Guess it was having an issue with my encrypted drive. I guess it's handy I'm not a secret agent or an political dissident I shall run unencrypted... -

i have cc installed on 2 pcs and 1 mac. i can only activate 2 at any one time which works well for me because my pcs are at home and my office and i use them most of the time.
but when i travel i take my macbook so i just deactivate one or both of my pcs (uninstalling is not needed) and sign in to my macs cc app.
