I'm so confused!  - Graphics related

This is what I want:
- Multiple screens, each with different backgrounds that I made in paint
- Button-type objects (you click on a picture of a sword to attack, for example) on each screen that will, when clicked, make text appear for 1 second then disappear
- Buttons to switch between the screens
I have no idea how to go about this... I have a book on Java, but it uses BreezySwing and I know that's just a basic program and I'll never use it again. I want to learn the actual Java graphics, but the tutorial on this site confused me and I couldn't get any of the supplied programs to work. (there were hardly any full programs as examples!)
A good example (but much more complicated than what I need) of what I want is Sonny, an online game (found here: [http://www.kongregate.com/games/ArmorGames/sonny]). My game is a Deat hMatch program, 1 vs. 1, including an inventory and a store.
Someone please help me, it would be really nice if you gave me a super basic program that had all of the things I want in it.

  • I get two kinds of crashes whenever I'm doing anything graphics-related...

I think. I think it's got something to do with graphics-related. But I don't know. Here's what happens.
Sometimes I'll be in iPhoto working on my photos. All of a sudden, the screen will go dim and I'll get the message that goes like "You have to restart your computer at this time". This often kills my iPhoto database and I have to rebuild everything... which is killing my workflow.
Other times, I'll get this massive crash which I think dims the screen but also spills out tons of weird code and gibberish. If I remembmer correctly, some it has to do with "stacking error" and there's also some "debug" stuff. Not sure, can't remember, I'm at work right now. This is what I'd call a hard crash in that it's not even "friendly" like the crash above which at least tells you you crashed and need to restart.
In both cases, I have to push the power button for a few seconds to shut down and then power on again.
This also happens more frequently if I'm in iPhoto and I'm editing an image which then opens Photoshop CS2. I'll be working in CS2 and BAM, i get one of those crashes.
I'll also get these crashes sometimes even if I'm ONLY in Adobe Photoshop CS2.
I swear, if someone can help me with this, I'll put them in for Sainthood! These crashes are KILLING my iPhoto work.
I run DiskWarrior frequently, I repair permissions frequently, etc. But I'm just hunting and gathering for solutions. I haven't found a real cohesive "troubleshooting list" that might tell me if I have some hardware issues or what.
    G5 1.8GHz (old model)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   iPhoto 5.x and Adobe Photoshop CS2

Since you said you repair permissions and use a hard-drive repair utility, then I'd wager (guessing) you have bad RAM.
You can diagnose it, as long as you can repeat the kernal panic:
If you have more than one stick of RAM, then try taking one out and see if you get the panic. If not, put the other back in and try again for the panic. If you don't have more than one stick of RAM, there's no reliable way I know of to diagnose RAM...
Keep in mind that it's possible for the RAM slot itself to be bad. In this case, start over with the RAM in a different slot--just to make sure a slot isn't bad.
Generally, if you're getting kernal panics that you can't pinpoint to isolated operations, then bad RAM could be the culprit. I've gone through a bout of this myself.
**obviously you have to power off before changing RAM, and use precautions for static, such as a static strap, or grounding yourself before touching it. If none of that makes sense, then take it to a repair center.

  • Graphics related crashes since Yosemite on a 27' late 2013 iMac

    Hello all,
My 27 inch late 2013 iMac with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB started freezing or auto-rebooting since I updated to Yosemite.
Crashes would occur randomly and were sometimes accompanied by lots of red boxes on the screen.
These kind of crashes seem to have stopped happening but now shifted to almost everytime I fire up Launchpad or Expose (and once when I opened the notifcation center). The screen freezes for a couple of seconds and the system will reboot, prompting me with a graphics related error.
Because my searches on this issue come up empty I would like to ask if anyone can tell me whether or not this is a bug or a hardware related problem.
    Thanks for any help
Maybe related: My iMac sometimes takes a more than usual amount of seconds to wake from sleep. The screen will turn on but remain black.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

    hi g4m3fr34k,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Lenovo g560 has a configuration with discrete Nvidia.
You can check this G560 datasheet
    http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/notebooks/Essential/G-Series/G560%20datasheet.pdf
Discrete graphics is an optional feature when ordered, These discrete graphics are soldered to the motherboard
You can send me your Serial number Through Private Message let me check your system config. if it came with an Nvidia. but Normally you can check this under your Device Manager / Display Adapter it should show you two graphics device Intel and Nvidia.
From the same Lenovo Data sheet
Lenovo g560 RAm can be upgraded till 8GB and on the system's Maintenance Manaual
    you can see compatible Processors.
and you can check the Manual about proper CPU replacement procedure.
Changing the CPU which contains the Intel HD graphics will possibly change the Intel HD graphics model.
but I believe adding a discrete Nvidia on a non Nvidia motherboard is not possible.

  • OSX Issues on G4--Graphics Related

I installed OS X 10.4.3. I began to experience kernal panics one right after the other. The only way the computer would boot was in safe mode. I Zapped PRAM, performed fsck, reset open firmware. Checked all RAM disabled all non-shipped perifs. I even erased all hard disks, checked them out and reinstalled OS X.
What would happen in reg boot mode, the screen would get all distorted. This would usually happen when a graphic action was taking place. Like a sub-menu coming down from a window (asking for a ok or cancel action). In safe mode this never happens, but the menus are not smooth when the action is taking place). When it crashes, a kernal panic screen always occurs. I even installed panther on another hard drive but it did it there too. I have been running OS X since version 10.0.1 and it never did it untill tiger was installed.
I was running in safe mode almost exclusively. Then perchance I booted in reg. mode and the computer seems fine...however, when I run some graphic programs, I get a window that says OpenGL not installed or cannot access.
I did notice that preview will not display any graphic files. when I double click a jpeg file or tiff file...Preview launches but the screen is grey and no file displayed. I can open them in QuickTime or the graphic program (photoshop).
the odd thing is that when I check About this Mac, the graphics card and settings say that QuartzExtreme and core Image is not supported.

The thing I cannot understand is why for the longest time I could not even boot in reg. mode. Now all of a sudden it starts up. My suspicion is that the graphics card or something on the board is going. Can anyone shed some light on this issue. If you need further info, feel free to ask.

    Hello hartfree,
    > I installed OS X 10.4.3.
Was it an install disk or an update? If it was an update, you may have encountered an error in the download. You may want to re-download the combo and try again:
    <a href:"http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1043combo.html">
Mac OS X Update 10.4.3 Combo
    >I began to experience kernal panics one right after the other.
The problems you're experiencing could be any number of things.
    1. It could happen with a bad installation of OS X. (an error in the installation disk, a glitch in the optical drive when installing, other unecessary peripherals attached to the computer via USB/Firewire...)
    2. Hardware such as memory, cpu, graphics card, can all of a sudden go bad. (But, that doesn't seem to be the case here.)
    >My suspicion is that the graphics card or something on the board is going.
Your graphics card is, to put it as gently as possible, old. But, it is well within the requirements of Tiger.
The only suggestion I have, when a kernal panic (or anything else unusual) happens, is to go to the Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and view the system log file. Sometimes, and sometimes not, there are clues that can indicate the source of the problem(s).

  • Serious log in issues.........graphics related??

    hi everyone!
I am having a serious issue with logging in to my mac. The problem started when i began having problems with my graphics cards. I have 2 ati hd2600xt cards in my 8 core mac pro, and they have run 3 of my monitors with absolutley no problem before but then suddenly a few weeks ago when i started up my machine only one screen would start working. If I re booted the mac then it would see all 3 monitors and work fine thereafter. However today i turned on the mac and it wouldnt see the other 2 screens at all. i unplugged everything from the machine and made sure the card was in the slot correctly, and reconnected the screens, booted up and had the same issue. I then wondered if there was a firmware update for the cards so i hooked up one monitor and went on to the internet and found some newer firmware. I installed the firmware, it said click to restart machine, i done that and when it restarted it just hung for a few minutes, I thought it may have been writing firmware so i left it for 20 minutes and nothing happened. At this point i decided to take the card out of the machine, i did that and then it got me to the login screen, i enter my password and it goes to log me in, then takes me straight back to the login screen again. I tried to reset my password, and it does exactly the same thing. I then wondered if my user account had gone wrong so i booted from disc and went in to terminal and checked everything was still on the hd which it was. I have managed to log in to my account through my laptop on the network and i can browse through my files and folders just fine from there, i have copied files on to my laptop, its all there just fine. I tried to screen share and enter the password to my account but it wont let me in. strange how my laptop will let me in to the file structure with the same log in as on my 8 core but the 8 core wont let me in.
I even tried logging in in safe mode and it does the same thing.
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    Pete Crossman

I am having a similar issue, but in my situation, my users cannot log in.  All of my users are network users on Mini's.  I am running 10.6.8 on my server.  I have created users before with no issues, but have not done so in months.  When I try to log the new user in, I get the following error:
xpchelper: Could not get path of user account (uid:1029) home directory:/Network/Servers/server.xxx.net/Volumes/Data/Users/username; error; The operation couldn't be completed. No such file or directory. Using home directory.
CFPreferences: user home directory at file://localhost/Network/Servers/server.xxx.net/Volumes/Data/Users/username/ is currently unavailable. User domains will be volatile.
    Authorizationhost: error |-[homedirmounter mount NetworkHomeWithURL: attributes: dirPath: username:]|PremountHomeDirectoryWithAuthentication (url=AFP://server.xxx.net/Users/homedir= /Network/Servers/server.xxx.net/Volumes/Data/Users/username, name=username) returned 5.
I have no idea of what to do.  I have verified that the user looks the same as my other users in WGM. The user's folder was created on the server.  The user has access to the folder.  I'm not sure what else could be wrong here.

  • Late 2010 MBP Graphics Related Crashes

I have a late 2010 MBP that is crashing (and has been for some time).  When it first started happening I was on 10.6.8 and it only happened when I was using Google Chrome.  I stopped using Chrome and the crashes stopped.
I have upgraded (finally) to Yosemite and am getting crashes every 10-20 mins.
All the reports name something to do with the Graphics.
Per several suggestions found via google searches, I switched off the automaic graphics switching and the problem only seemed to get worse.  So is my graphics card bad vs the logic board component that does the switching?

As  you have upgraded OS X the system has put more demand on using the discrete GPU which is the cause of the problem.
The problem is likely due to the discrete GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. This is a temporary workaround until you get your motherboard replaced.
I would spend your money on a new model, frankly.

  • Confusing issue relating to javac

    Hi all,
I have 2 files: A.java and B.java in foo/test/xcom with content as following:
    A.java:
    package xcom;
    public class A {}
    B.java
    package xcom;
    public class B extends A {}
Now, I use javac to compile it.
** 1st try: set current directory to "xcom" then invoke:
    javac A.java --> build successfully, created A.class
javac B.java --> error (cannot find symbol: class A)
** 2nd try: set current directory to "test" then invoke
    javac -cp . xcom/B.java --> build successfully, created B.class
My question is: why I cannot build B.java but it's successful with A.java in 1st try? (i'm using java 6)
    Thanks in advanced.

To compile class B, it needs class A and it does not know where to find it.
Since you did not specify any classpath, . (current directory) is assumed.
It tries to find test/xcom/./xcom/A.class (if already compiled) or test/xcom/./xcom/A.java (to compile it along with B.java), but it finds none.
Therefore, just specify the correct "-cp .." and it will work.

  • Kernal panic (graphics related?) and laptop death

After 5.5 years, I had my first kernal panic this morning. My powerbook G4 12" now seems to only startup if an external monitor is connected to it. The "status indicator" light on the lid release on the front does not light up when the laptop is running, but does pulse when it is put into sleep mode. I was getting a kernal panic every time I removed the second display, but it finally kept working this time.
Anyone have any suggestions? Should I try to dig out my OS install disks? Kernal panic logic pasted below:

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
I would get out the original OS X disks that came with the system, and run the Apple hardware test. Kernel panics are usually, but not always, caused by hardware, with memory the leading cause.

  • Graphics issues since latest 10.8.2 update

Last Friday, I applied the latest update to 10.8 (10.8.2?). Since then I have noticed a couple of issues, both of which appear to be graphics related. FWIW, my hardware is an early 2011, 15-inch MBP with discrete graphics (Radeon 6750M).
    1. In one instance, I attached an external display to the Thunderbolt port (DVI adapter). The system switched to discrete graphics, and my onboard display suddenly had a very slight blue shade. The external display displayed color properly, only the onboard was affected. Unplugging the external display (and switching back to integrated graphics) fixed the onboard colors. Re-plugging the external yielded the same result. After a reboot, the issue has not re-occurred (~24hrs). Some searching of Google indicates that this is not an isolated issue. Is there a known cause (and solution), to prevent further interruptions?
    2. In a number of occurances, I have seen the Terminal application become exremely slow to respond, as in 10+ second keypress responses. The entire application appears affected, including opening new terminal tabs and the cursor switching from I-beam to pointer (as I move it from the terminal space to the tab bar). After some amount of time (several minutes?), terminal function returns to normal. The system.log file shows the following message repeated during the event.

    (1) is probably a colour profile bug.  When you next see the issue, go to System Preferences > Displays > Colour, and confirm that the correct colour profile is selected for the affected monitor.  If it is, then deselect it by choosing another one, then reselect it.  If your display regains its expected colour you can assume it's a colour profile bug.  In my experience colour profiles are prone to this kind of behaviour, though Apple has made things more stable in the last year or so.

  • Nvidia GeoForce Go 7600 graphics driver and IQ770 with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit edition

I have been having problems with my screen for several months now:  every so often, for no apparent reason, it loses some of the pixels.  I can still read the items on the screen, but the resolution is trashed.  It happens intermittently and then goes back to normal.  I have tried uninstalling the graphics driver and letting the computer go find it on a reboot.  This does not work.  I have also tried installing the original graphics driver.  This does not work either.
If I look in the "Problem Reports" area in Control Panel, there is a graphics related error:
Error Message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER (Q293078)  The resolution listed is to reinstall the device driver (which I've tried dozens of times without success) or to change the computer's performance settings, which also does nothing.  I still get the occasional loss of screen clarity which returns to normal all by itself.
Is anyone else seeing this problem?  Does anyone have a resolution?
I have tried the latest graphics driver available on the hp website, from 8-2008 as well as the originally installed version from January 2007.  The version of Windows is Vista Home Premium 32 bit edition, Service Pack 1.
If I completely uninstall the graphics driver, and do not reload any, the screen performance is fine, but then there are other problems, such as graphics acceleration.
    Thanks for your help.

    For the IQ700 series
If you're running Windows Vista SP2, there is a patch for USB patch for NVIDIA chipsets
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975163/
If you're running Windows 7, install this patch
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/Driver-update-for-Win7-USB-issue-on-nVidia-chipse...
And only use the driver from the system manufacturer's website or Windows Update. Do not use the latest drivers from NVIDIA's website for the IQ700 series

  • An alert messarge i don't underdant: insane object at BDHP + 83ACC in "VI name's":{graphics} (0x80):Front Panel Terminal (Term)

    Hello!
I don't know why in just yesterday appear in one of my VI an alert message or error message when i want to close oer save the VI.
The message is like the following one:
Insane object at BDHP + 93ACC in "Vi name's": {graphics} (0x80}: Front Panel Terminal   (Term)
I don't know why now it appears this message because i have no modify the Vi.
I want to ask you why it appears this message and the most important......how can i solve it?
    Thank you very much
    Larson

Hi!!! I copy and paste from an NI engineer post asking about what is the "insane object" problem:
This message means that an object in LabVIEW such as a wire or a loop tunnel does not pass an internal test known as a sanity check. If the errors are serious enough, LabVIEW exits because something has become very corrupted. Sanity checks occur before each save, to ensure that corrupted VIs are not written over good VIs. They also happen as part of the compile process. Thus, sanity checks happen frequently. Many insanities are actually fixed (made sane) after the dialog box appears and will not appear again, so the first thing you should do after receiving an insane object error is to try to make a backup copy of the VI, run it, and perform some additional editing to see if the problem was resolved automatically.
VI corruptions do not happen often. They can happen because of disk corruption, but this will often lead to a file that can no longer be loaded. Corruptions can also happen because the programmer did something that corrupts a LabVIEW data type, perhaps as the result of a call to external code. The following are examples of insane object errors:
Insane Object at BDHP+4D50 in 'sksks.vi': (graphics) (0x80):wire segment (WIRE)
Insane Object at BDHP+5CA0 in "CAPL3.vi": (graphics) (0x80):loop tunnel (DCO)
In the first example above, the error message itself gives information about which object is insane. BDHP means the offending object exists on the block diagram heap, as opposed to the FPHP for front panel heap. The +4D50 is the hex offset in the heap where the object is located. The "Wire Segment" text indicates that the object is a wire object. The "graphics" text indicates that the insanity is graphics-related, which means it is not serious and will most likely be repaired automatically.
The second message above is similar, but refers to a loop tunnel (i.e., the tunnel formed where a wire crosses the edge of a loop) rather than a wire.
Solution: If you receive an insane object message, it is best to delete and recreate the most recently created objects on either the front panel or block diagram, depending on whether the error message contains "FPHP" or "BDHP". Make use of the text in the error message in deciding which objects to rebuild. In the case of the second message above, it would be best to delete and recreate the most recently created loop tunnels.
Another workaround that works best if the VI is small is to select the entire diagram and copy it to a new VI. After saving the new VI, there is a good chance the insane object error will no longer appear. If the VI is too large to cut and paste to a new VI and another computer with an identical version of LabVIEW is available, you can copy the VI to disk (or to your network if that is available) and open it on the second machine. If the insane object errors do not appear, save the VI (on the second machine) and transfer it back to the original PC (by disk or by network). The new, uncorrupted version of the VI should now run without generating the insane object error.
    Hope that helps you,
    Jaime

  • IMac goes to sleep unexpectedly, Finder issues with flash drives - related?

My iMac falls asleep for no known reason, often in the middle of active use. (Similar problem recently described in thread with messageID=11829917.)
Sleep onset is frequent but seems to vary based on both currently-running software and attached devices (particularly USB flash drives). It will almost always wake up when I hit the space bar afterward, but might sleep again within a minute or two, then not for an hour or more. The sleep occurs with little notice (brief stall of display, sometimes enough time to click on another app window and bring that forward before the screen goes dark), and 95% of the time the computer wakes up after hitting the spacebar. The other 5 % of the time the display reappears but the entire OS is frozen and usually requires unplugging the power cable. There are other symptoms in the Finder - more below. Once in a while the fan revs up like a WWII fighter plane taking off from a carrier, but this is unusual and all the really irritating stuff also happens without this symptom, which usually stops on its own. Immediately after reawakening error messages are displayed to report that flash drives were improperly disconnected (Tell me about it! This has been the case for several months whether the computer goes to sleep by itself or if I put it there manually.)
The computer seems to go into sleep mode most frequently when not-particularly-demanding graphics (Photoshop Elements and Adobe Reader) and video (QuickTime Pro 7.6.4) apps are running. Turning these off makes nod-offs less frequent but doesn't stop it entirely. When video thumbnails are displayed in Finder windows a lot of time may be required to load the data and this often paralyzes everything else AND this also seems to be a trigger for a nod-off (i.e. QuickTime not necessary to make the computer choke). This is highly variable and some video clips load quickly (< 20 sec), while others take several minutes, and this doesn't necessarily correlate with file size.
Another factor is whether flash drives are connected - these seem to make the nod-offs more frequent AND Finder regularly loses communication to these both while just sitting there and also in the middle of file transfers. A very early 250 MB drive (Lexar - vintage 2004) will always communicate, but different USB2-capable drives all are either unreliable (Lexar 8 GB and KData 4 GB both < 1 yr old) or apparently dead (Lexar 2 GB ~ 2 yr old). The failures may be damaging the drives - they are inconsistent-to-bad at communicating with my MacBook Pro. I know this sounds like the drives are at fault, but there are things which make me suspect the OS (both computers use the same version): 1) different flash drives display the same on-again-off-again behavior AND the 2) the 2 GB drive that hasn't communicated with my Macs in over a month has no trouble talking with my wife's WinXP computer. When communication isn't working with these drives, they do not show up in either Finder or Disk Utility. When the Mac-dead 2 GB Lexar is plugged into either computer and I launch Disk Utility, the initial scan for drives never finishes so I have to force quit. (When they are working, on the iMac the large drives only appear in Finder if I go to User and press Command-uparrow (to go up a directory layer) - in columns display mode nothing appears in the left-hand column.
(The following describes a set of problems I've had a little longer and which may or may not be related):
At times the Finder loses some but not all functions:
    1) Sometimes files in the Trash can't be ejected* even when all apps are turned off
    2) usually when problem 1) is observed, no keyboard commands work: nothing happens when pressing Command-W, Command-uparrow or Command-N to open a new window. Text typed will not be entered to change filenames (but this can still be done by typing the desired text in TextEdit, copying there and selecting and pasting with mouse commands.)
<* I have downloaded an app for forcing file deletion, but haven't really needed it - the delete option and keyboard commands all return after shutdown and reboot, and there's usually enough annoying stuff going on by this time that that seems the best thing to do.>
Things which I've tried to fix it with so far (not in this order):
    - blowing dust out of the back with canned air
    - checking temperatures - CPU/GPU showing 72/73, HD bay 51, etc.
    - fixing permissions from normal boot
    - boot from install disk and running extended hardware test (no problems found during scans repeated several times during the past month)
    - fixing permissions and running Disk First Aid from install disk boot
    - getting files off the hard drive (was as low as 3 GB free space, currently ~ 35 GB and climbing)
    - clearing PRAM
    - resetting system manager (name? - hold down power button when reconnecting power cable, etc.)
    - Power Saver display and computer auto sleep are shut off (both on "never" - I regularly put it to sleep manually)
    - virus scans (Clam XAV)
I realize that this is a kitchen sink collection of symptoms, but these things may be related and if so, OS developers may want to be sure these problems are avoided in current versions. (Yes I will upgrade my OS soon...)

Thanks for checking in, Miriam - sorry to get testy about it.
The iMac's RAM is maxed out (2.5 GB)
Yes, the system log does report overtemp message to Power management prior to shutdown (today's log at end of post)
Where do I find normal temperatures for the system? What are the important parameters to watch and what sort of fixes are possible?
    iStat currently shows:
    HD 54° CPU 67° GPU 72° Incoming air 38° (???)
HD bay 54° GPU ambient 71° opt drive 49°
    ==========================================
Console.log was largely full of stuff about a bad flash drive I stuck in as a Hail Mary and failure of communication with a scanner (old HP, driver package installs a program which starts at launch which doesn't show up under Startup Items. Apparently the permission got mislaid, so I fixed permissions and this seems OK now. (Only included that because some of it shows up in System.log and it's not worth focusing on.)
[That all said, there is a software/OS component to the problem and it is graphics-related. The other night I was looking at some flash videos in a series and one in particular repeatedly caused shutdown, while others played normally: domain = jebhost.com /youtube/list.php?q=Henry+8.o&Submit=GO "The Tricycle Thief" only played through once out of about six tries.]

  • 24" iMac good enough for graphic design?

I'm looking into getting a Mac so I can work from home for the next few months (back surgery). I use the Adobe CS as well as other graphic related applications. While I know getting a Mac Pro would be the best option it's also a very expensive option (I need the 23" monitor as well). Would the top config. of the iMac be suitable for moderate graphic design use? Currently at the office I am using a Dual 2.5 G5 so I'm not expecting top of the line performance. Just something that would work as well as my work computer. I do realize it is not expandable however after a few months it will just become a computer I use for typical home use. Thank you in advance.

Hi Barry, I did as you said and searched on the forum. What I found was this entry that pretty much sums it up. It's pretty much identical to my situation. Turns out CS2 runs at about half speed under Rosetta. Even the oldest G5s seem to out perform it. I guess that's it, I start looking for an old G5. Thanks for all your help and suggestions. Below is the entry I found that says it all.
Re: Intel iMac and Adobe CS2
Posted: Mar 24, 2006 3:30 AM in response to: Sam Anderson
I've been using a 20" Intel 2 GHz iMac with 1 GB RAM now for just over a month and use Adobe CS2 on it and I'm incredibly disappointed with the performance of the software under Rosetta. So much so that I regret buying the Intel version and wish I'd bought a good old G5 processor model.
The main issue is speed. I upgraded from a Dual 866 mHz G4 and am encountering slower performance with CS2 on my new iMac than I did on that. Illustrator is especially excruciating to use. Another issue is that I can only run two CS2 apps at the same time never three. If I try, one of them randomly crashes. Reinstalls haven't cured it either.
I've called both Adobe and Apple in order to resolve the problem and neither have a solution. Adobe's view on it is that CS2 and earlier were not written to work on the Intel machine and so they cannot address any support problems with patches or updates. Their only solution is waiting until CS3 is released in Autumn which will be Intel compatible.
Based on this experience my advice would be to wait until CS3 is released before you buy one. Otherwise just grin and bear it if you have to have one now!
