I'm thinking about the Mini or the MacAir.  I only use a computer to email, web surf, write documents, store photos, print and scan and pay bills on line.  That's it.  Any opinions? Thanks in advance.

I

The Macbook Air is a very light, very portable system (my Wife has one).
The Mac mini will force you to sit in one location, but you can put a larger monitor on it (at an extra cost) along with the keyboard and mouse (or trackpad) you desire.  But even with adding keyboard, mount/trackpad, monitor, the Mac mini can be cheaper than the Macbook Air.
If you do not have a lot of writing to do, you might even consider an iPad or iPad mini.  You can use a wireless bluetooth keyboard with the device if you need to write large volumes of words, but even with a keyboard, it will be a much more inexpensive option.
All in all, I would lean towards the Macbook Air, but that is just me

  • Only use a computer for email, internet, basic computing. Is the ipad a better option than a macbook?

    Used to have a macbook, bought it back in '07, had to sell it shortly thereafter.
    Don't have a computer now and need one.
    Looking over the macbook pro, I am wondering if it is too much computer for me.
    I use a computer for emails, surfing the web and twitter.
    I'm wondering if the ipad would be a better fit, or if I should be looking for a computer.
    Thanks.

    MacBook air just perfect i have an iPad 2 ( I know it's an old one but it is almost same ) i mostly need pc for stuff and normally I like to download movies for that I need a good memory which you won't get on an iPad best choice for you is a 11 or 13 inch MacBook air iPad is bettween comp and a phone it is good but not enought ( altleast for me ) if you take an iPad u won't the benefits of downloading zip files and many other files but with a MacBook you can do it as it supports all iPad is good for presenting stuff good for reading books , web pages are good too ( flash is not there so some sites are not good ) editing word docs or slidshows are nice and easy but not fully usefull ( simple editing options) if you convert the files say into doc it gets messy on a comp to see , plus doc files with lots of stuff like photos and tables gets messed up but if we convert to PDF then you get a nice experience , MacBook has many options in pages , numbers , keynote , you will like an iPad even I like it but like u even I am looking for a MacBook right now as I need to back up files and download movies anyways it decides unto u so go to the apple shop he will help u choice the right choice a person here will only tell good stuff and suggest what he likes but if you go to the apple store he will give you the perfect choice for u

  • What do you think about the html5?

    I've been seeing developers philosophizing about the future, and I want to know what do you think about the brand new html5?
    mainly because the html5 can take out of the market technology ( flex ).
    thanks for the opinion!!!
    [email protected]

    Yep this is most definitely not just a rumor, I've found plenty of sources talking about this.
    Here's someone's take on HTML5, a non-Adobe perspective, from a Silverlight developer.  I thought this would be interesting to mention.  Not sure I agree 100% with everything said (IE may not be most used browser and I don't believe in DRM), but it's an interesting read anyway:
    Yes, you can do a LOT of stuff with HTML5 + JS that Silverlight is good for. But HTML5 will only reach Candidate Recommendation status in 2012 - if Silverlight keeps the current pace, it will be at V7 by then.
    HTML5 will only get you approximately what Silverlight had at V1.0. A Canvas element, some video playback capabilites, and a Javascript programming model. Can you imagine how further advanced Silverlight 4 is at the moment?
    Actually, scratch that - the video quality and availability of HTML5 is a lot worse than what Silverlight has to offer. There is no DRM, no Smooth Streaming, not even full screen! No GPU acceleration either. Even the codec HTML5 has to support is not standardized! This results in Firefox 3.6 having only Theora decoder, and Youtube experimenting with HTML in H.264 (on the same day FF3.6 launched), only playable in approx. 4-5% of the world's browsers.
    Internet Explorer is still the most widely used browser on the web, and does not have HTML5. Currently, there are more Silverlight capable browsers browsing the web than HTML5 compatible ones. I don't think that in the next 3 years you will be able to create an HTML5 app and hope that at least 50% of the world's population can view it without switching browsers. (and remember: installing a plugin is a lot less hassle than switching to a new browser!)
    HTML5 will not be truly cross-browser standard for quite a long time, if ever. There are too many things that the browser developer can do as they wish - just think about the aforementioned video codec issue. There are too many little differences in each browser's Javascript implementation to make it really portable.
    The developer story: nothing in the HTML + JS world comes close to the awesome Visual Studio and Expression Blend tools. Javascript is cool for small apps, but cannot hold a candle to C# when it comes to serious development. Fighting with browser and OS incompatilities takes up a huge amount of time for any HTML website or web app - with Silverlight you don't have this.
    Just compare what the best HTML / Ajax company in the world (Google) did with maps, and what MS did to see the difference. Go tohttp://maps.google.com/ (watch out - the Streetview part is in Flash, not Ajax), and compare it to http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/. That is the difference I am talking about.
    Of course he means (or should have meant) Flex/Flash rather than just Flash.  As for the GWT and other AJAX fanboys who I guess think browser compatibility problems are going to be a thing of the past (or won't be a drag on corporate bottom lines - haha), it makes you wonder what other wild fantasies they're envisioning for the future.  Next they'll come and tell us XML-based protocols are going to be as fast as AMF...

  • THinking about the switch from PC to Mac Pro

    I'm looking at a configuration of two 2.8 quad-core with 2 gb ram from Apple, 6 gb ram from 3rd party, a single 750 SATA drive and Final Cut 2 Studio, and running VMWare Fusion for running Windows apps, and software development tools (Windows world). I have been doing a fair amount of video editing/processing, and see that growing - between this increase, and Windows Vista, I think the Mac world may be my best choice - I would run the Windows apps under Windows XP.
    The Apple Store recommended going with 2 x ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB cards - I will be running with dual monitors, and the biggest demand will come from Final Cut 2. Is there a better choice to be made for the money?
    Anybody see any flags raised by what I say I want to do, and the hardware I'm thinking about?
    I debated the value in the second Quad core - whether the Final Cut 2 Studio software was written to take adavantage of multiple cores. I'm leaning toward the second quad core since the studio is most likely separate apps, and there might be some benefit provided the second quad core via the OS. Any thoughts on this?
    The Ram and hard drives are too pricey from Apple - any suggestions on good third party supplier for the ram chips - I know they need to meet the Apple specs, but assume some mfgs have had a better production/quality history than others.
    Any input on this is appreaciated.
    Michael

    Hatter,
    The configuration is close - I like both of your suggestions on the graphics card and the boot drive - Apple won't add the Radeon 3870 card, nor the Velocity Raptor drive. So, if I buy the 3870 and Velocity Raptor from OWC, there is a decision I would have to make with regard to what I buy from Apple.
    I'd like to continue the process, listing my thoughts, hoping to get more good feedback.
    I'm leaning towards buying Apple's standard graphics card (Radeon 2600), and use it for lower demand activities - I figure I can always upgrade it at a later date if the performance is frustrating - I'll have a good comparison with the 3870, so the contrast should be apparent. I'm thinking about the standard 320 g drive, since the extra cost ($50 for 500g, or $150 for 750g) doesn't make sense with the Caviar Black priced at ~$150.
    So, I would be getting a machine with the OS sitting on the 320g drive. *Is there a good strategy for adding the Velocity Raptor, making it my boot drive?*
    I'm assuming I will get the OS on disc - is this true?
    Lastly, I'm looking at the timing of purchasing. I debated on waiting to buy until after MacWorld 2009, but plan on buying prior to the event. My thought was to avoid any issues that come with new releases - adding another layer of issues without knowing what is "normal behavior" isn't worth the increased functionality. In the PC world, sales abound at the end of quarter, and prior to new release. *Is it worth waiting a little while hoping Apple will discount the Mac Pro? Or is this unlikely??*
    Again, thanks for all of the great suggestions.

  • Hi, I've used PC's all my life and thinking about the switch

    ok im probably going to ask some stupid questions, but i really dont know much about mac powerbooks.
    first off the click key (right below the trackpad) there is only one clicker, in PC's there is 2. How would i click to print or view the photo bigger and all of that stuff you can do when you right click on a pc?
    also above the Powerbook 12" screen on the left and right, there are those bumps that arent on the 15" and 17", are those bumps like cylinder shaped (round, but flat on the top) or is it like a half sphere (just round all over and curved.)
    Also, i plan on buying a Powerbook for college, which would you recommend, the 12" or 15", is the 12" a big enough screen or is it something you have to squint your eyes to see.
    One last thing, does SAFARI block internet sites just randomly or can it go and do everything that Internet Explorer can?
    Thanks in advance for answering any of these.
    Going to be a first time Mac buy, just want to learn more about them.

    there's no such thing as stupid questions here...I just switched from a life of Windows last month, so I can offer an opinion from a new set of Mac eyes...I am very very very please with the switch...I love the mouse setup...the one button mouse seems so much more intuitive to me...I catch myself ctrl+clicking at school all the time...I have the 12 inch powerbook...for school I would recommend the 12 inch just because it will not hog as much desk space as a 15 or 17 inch model...Internet Explorer can do stuff?? I thought IE was good for...nothing?? I haven't used IE inn about two years...but Safari is far better than IE, although personally I use Camino (Mozilla)...but please don't be scared...I was a little confused with the Mac interface and working about for the first hour...but after that it became so much easier...The Mac OS is so much easier to use, especially with Tiger and spotlight...man spotlight is incredible...it's incredible...just like everything else in the world of Macintosh...please do yourself a favor and BUY BUY BUY!!! My wife got her mac at the same time as me and she said she felt liked she'd been 'Saved' as in religious terminology...it's that good.....

    What do you think about the iPhone 4 for my 11 year old daughter

    It should be a good choice. I recently got the 5C which typically is $99 with supported carriers. Verizon, AT&T, Sprint provide attractive pricing with a two year contract or it you are adding a line to your current service. I have several friends using the 4S, and they have been very pleased with them.

  • What do you think about the iMac Intel 17"

    I wonder if there is a big difference between the iMac 17" 1.83 Ghz (from 999$) and the iMac 17" with 2 Ghz (from 1199$). One of them includes apple remote, 1Go SDRAM and a superdrive DVD writer for 200$ more than the other. I'd like to know what you think about the iMac 1.83Ghz 999$, should i wait and choose the 2Ghz model ?

    I checked out both models, and I think the 2.0 Ghz is actually a much better deal. OS X is amazing but its very graphics intensive and uses a lot of memory. The included video card in the 2 ghz machine helps a lot. Furthermore, the ability to write DVDs makes it fast and easy to archive your data for backup and portability. I would strongly recommend the upgraded system, unless your intended uses don't include much video/audio application. If you are going to be playing around with a lot of music or movies, the upgraded graphics, memory, and processor speed will really help.

    Hi
    Thanks for that. Yes, the ipad was purchased recently. I called Apple last Friday and they ask for the receipt. I wonder if anyone were able to swap their ipad for a larger storage in the past at the apple store without a receipt? 16Gb is such a small storage.

  • Problem about the macro in word using ole

    Hi,
       Now i have an urgent problem.
       I want to use ole2_object to control a word document by calling the macro.  i want to pass a parameter for the marco but i don't know how to pass it .  the main method i use as following:
        macro = 'startmerge."
        call method document->open_document_from_table
           exporting
                 document_size  = doc_size
                 document_table = doc_table[]
                  open_inplace   = 'X'
                 startup_macro   = macro.    " here is my problem?????
    the macro's code as following:
    Sub startmerge(file As String)
    ' startmerge Macro
    ' Macro recorded 2000-1-23 by Ryan
    Dim fs     As Object
    'Dim file As String
    'file = "C:\SAPTEMP.JPG"
          Set fs = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
    If fs.fileexists(file) Then
        Application.GoBack
        Selection.InlineShapes.AddPicture FileName:=file, LinkToFile:= _
            False, SaveWithDocument:=True
    Else
    MsgBox "no file found"
    End If
    Set myMerge = ThisDocument.MailMerge
    If myMerge.State = wdMainAndSourceAndHeader Or _
        myMerge.State = wdMainAndDataSource Then
    End If
    With myMerge
        .MainDocumentType = wdEnvelopes
        .OpenDataSource Name:="c:\appraial_tmp.txt", ReadOnly:=True
        .Destination = wdSendToNewDocument
        .Execute
    End With
    End Sub
    now i want to pass a value for the parameter 'file' in abap by calling a macro  'startmerge'.
    Can anyone give me some advice? or give me some advice?
    Thanks a  lot in advance.

    Hi, aRs,
        thank you very much . i have get the approach to solve this problem form the link you given. In abap sap have provided a method to call a marco using parameters.  Following is the kernel code:
        macro = 'startmerge'."()
        call method document->open_document_from_table
           exporting
                 document_size  = doc_size
                 document_table = doc_table[]
                  open_inplace   = 'X'
                startup_macro   = macro.
       data: error like I_OI_ERROR.
       create object error.
        CALL METHOD DOCUMENT->EXECUTE_MACRO
           EXPORTING
             MACRO_STRING = macro
                            NO_FLUSH     = ' '
             PARAM1       = 'C:\3.JPG'
                            PARAM10      =
                            PARAM11      =
                            PARAM12      =
                            PARAM2       =
                            PARAM3       =
                            PARAM4       =
                            PARAM5       =
                            PARAM6       =
                            PARAM7       =
                            PARAM8       =
                            PARAM9       =
                             PARAM_COUNT  = 1
                            SCRIPT_NAME  =
                          IMPORTING
                            ERROR        = error
                            RETCODE      =
                          CHANGING
                            ERROR_STRING =
                            RETVALUE     =
    so appreciate for you response.

  • Question about the CSS behavior when using layer 3 sticky and sticky table

    Hi everyone,
    I have a question about the CSS behavior when using layer 3 sticky and sticky table is full.
    If I configure layer 3 sticky and specify the inactivity timeout as below, how does the CSS
    handle subsequent needed sticky requests ?
    advanced-balance sticky-srcip
    sticky-inact-timeout 30
    CSS document says that
    Note:
    If you use the sticky-inact-timeout command to specify the inactivity timeout
    period on a sticky connection, when the sticky table becomes full and none of
    the entries have expired from the sticky table, the CSS rejects subsequent
    needed sticky requests.
    My question is what is the next reaction by doing the CSS if the CSS is in the
    following condition:
    when the sticky table becomes full and none of the entries have expired from
    the sticky table, the CSS rejects subsequent needed sticky requests
    Does CSS just rejects/drops subsequent needed sticky requests ?
    or
    Does CSS does not stick subsequence requests to particular service but CSS forward
    subsequence requests with round-robin basis ? which means if the sticky table is full,
    the CSS just works round-robin load balancing fashion for subsequence requests ?
    Your information would be appreciated.
    Best regards,

    Hello,
    There is a good document explaining this on Cisco web site
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/contnetw/ps789/products_tech_note09186a0080094b4b.shtml
    It depends if the sticky-inact-timeout is used or not. If not, it's FIFO (the oldest entry in the sticky table is removed). If yes, the CSS will reject the next sticky request.

    You can reduce the size to normal, which is about 1GB, by restoring the phone.
    Backing Up, updating, and restoring your iPhone and iPod touch software
    The size of this part can increase when something goes wrong during a sync, or some files can't be read anymore by iTunes.
