I need to transfer my music from an old iPod to a new computer

I have a 9 yo iPod that has not had access to a computer for over 4 years. The iPod still works fine.
I'm getting a new mini mac and would lilke to set up an iTunes account on it and have my music and other files.
How do I transfer items? or is it even possible.

Which iPod model is it? Does it connect with USB? If it needs FireWire (3rd gen iPod or older), the current Mac mini still has FireWire, but it is FireWire 800 (9-pin) so you will need an adapter to convert it to the old FireWire 400 (6-pin).
Once the iPod connects to the Mac, you cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store). However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer. If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your new Mac, you can add them to the iTunes library.

i have an old ipod 80GB which has a large amount of my music from an old laptop on it. i've just bought myself a macbook pro and want to put all of that music onto the new computer but i havent got the old laptop to change any settings on the ipod before i start transferring data. is there a way of doing this?

All of your music should be in itunes on your computer. If it is not, then put it there.
You can then sync it to the ipod.
